uhm, if they can shut it down...they already did when was still profitable...they can do (sooner o later)

and now allow it for free? there's for sure a catch (or multiple),

especially since in their quarterly reports...sales are declining

let's hope for the best, and prepare for the worst.

Except they neither gain nor lose anything by licensing it for free. They aren't paying for the servers, they aren't paying for developers, community managers, support staff, etc to support the game. They don't really have any financial incentive to shut down Homecoming even with declining sales unless they think that the game would generate enough profit so as to change that for their investment in all of the above, for let's be honest a niche, (almost) 20-year-old game. Could they shut it down? Yep, they own the IP. Will they shut it down? At least not in the immediate short term unless Homecoming messes something up and breaks the license terms. Longer than that, say at the end of the terms of the agreement, we don't know there. Hopefully, they just renew the terms for another period (however long that may be) because there is still really nothing to lose or gain by doing so.

    UniqueDragon, is that you?

I doubt it is UniqueDragon. UD made sense. He used some... strange phrasing. But, I at least understood what he was trying to say. I'm at a loss here.

  3. You can modify your reputation so even solo you can face mobs as a team of 8.

Maybe a stupid question, how is what you mention above done?

Who you talk to depends on if you're a Hero or a Villain.

But there's an NPC you talk to, that adjusts your Notoriety.  You can set it so that Door Missions spawn as if you level was -1 to +4 compared to what you actually are, and so that the minimum team size is anywhere from just you (x1) up to a full eight members (x8).

Two people, same mission; one is at -1/x0 - most of the enemies will con Blue, some White, and an occasional Lieutenant might be Yellow.  The other is at +4/x8.  EVERYTHING IS RED AND PURPLE, and there's six or more times as many of those things.  :)

You can talk to the Field Analysts or Fateweavers but, you don't need to. Notoriety can be changed by clicking on the Chat Bubble icon on your chat window.

  4. Everyone thinks they're a villain, until a real villain walks in the room. Thanks for all the pvp fun, I would have stayed until the servers closed, but even the greatest Villain in the World can't fight you all and leukemia at the same time. My wife and I worked hard for 10 years to have a child, only for me to have some tumors pop up in my lymph nodes. I appreciate your calls, I was happy that you were thinking of me. I know I looked funny all bald and sick, but I had a real fight to deal with. The good news is that it's been in remission for some time, and all I have to do is keep up with the screening to make sure it doesn't come back.

@tazz villain IRL, not even *67 is gonna let you hide from me.

Sorry you had to go through that. Glad to hear you're in remission, though. Welcome Home!

  5. So I had a disquieting thought.

NCSoft seems to not know what to do with the CoH IP. They tried launching their own version with City of Hero and it was a dud. They closed down CoH because it's just not really their thing. They appear to be aware of this and the other private servers, but they're not (so far) doing anything about it. But Homecoming hit 100,000 players last week, which, IIRC, is 1/2 to 1/3 the size of the peak live playerbase. Superheroes are still big in Hollywood, and if there was ever a time for a AA superhero MMO to hit the market, it's now.

What if NCSoft is letting Homecoming run without harassment to build up the value of the IP so they can sell it to some other developer? Like I said, they don't seem to want it themselves. But if they could drop it for a few hundred mil or even a billion, they might do that. Then the new owner would almost certainly come down on these servers as infringing on their new investment.

I hope I'm way off base with this...

I don't know how much weight I give to the theory that City of Hero's failure (in 2005) related to City of Heroes shut down (in 2012). I say this considering it had no impact on on them purchasing the full rights in 2006 and doesn't seem to have an impact 6 years later when they shut the game down. It is clear the NCSoft was no longer interested in running the game. And they did claim at the time that they wanted to focus on the Asia market more.

As for letting Homecoming and the rest run in order to drum up business, I think they missed their opportunity to sell to anyone but the community at this point. The code base is out in the wild and we don't need a company to run it. What company would waste the money to the rights to a game they cannot control? The problem with cracking down is yeah there is only 5 known servers now. But, there is nothing preventing more from popping up. It would be playing whack-a-mole on that investment, and each pursuit would be more investment spent. It would not be worth it. I think they are doing nothing because it is not worth it financially to do it. Pure and simply, bottom-line motivation.

  6. Frigid Bridget reporting in, glad to have run into so many old familiar faces on the resurrected Pinnbadges -- Bill Z Bubba, Pie-Ro, and more! Anyone in touch with Jane Reaction? Still fondly remember her leading us to victory on Master of STF.

Haven’t seen her on yet. But, I totally agree it would be great to have her back on with us!

  7. Think its because the Hero contacts can attack npcs who come close, and Yins character summons that stupid psi vortex thing. I expect someone pulled mobs across.

I'm certain that is what it is. But, I'd contend the placement of the pet in reaction to fighting mobs is still a bug. And that bug could be used for griefing.

  8. Has anyone else had a difficult time starting this TF be directly interacting with the contact? It appears she has a healing pet spawned right on top of here that makes it so you can only click on here from weird angles. At leat that is the case on Excelsior.

Probably a simple fix to move the bit forward a few ticks.

  9. GM_Jimmy as I have been called a fool by members of this 'community' for disagreeing about the AE nerf and that xp itself didn't actually need to be nerfed by members of this community whose only beliefs is 'farming bad', please elaborate on this

(Another aside before I continue: The AE nerf was originally to reduce the strain on the server as many AE farm maps used mechanics which were incredibly server-intensive,

As I have tried to tell people, the only server intensive thing in a AE farm is ambush farms and that is due to how the map/spawn points/spawns are loaded. But all I ever get told is that I'm stupid and all farming bad. So which is it, am I wrong or are ambush farms the only bad thing?

I'm with you on this. People are just rude to the ones that support AE and level with it. They rather force their play style on everyone else " sounds like real politics in the world". First, it was to give the servers a break from being overloaded and I agree it needed to be done but we where told it was just a temp thing until it calmed down. Now It's we are going to force you to level our way because you level to fast. Funny thing is people are still power leveling outside of the AE. I did it last night lvl 10 to 40's faster then it would of took me to solo do it. I joined a level 50 brute and He ran me through an end game TF. and what wasn't posted here is the GM saying it causes grief to other players that can't find a group because everyone will be in AE missions, which is funny. If you are really trying to find a group you won't have trouble finding one. LFG chat is proof of that

LFG is proof you can find a DFB team.

Powerlevelling doesn’t bother me but, I couldn’t pass up the quip.

Sorry, this is BS.  Sure you can get DFB teams in the LFG chat, you can also get all the TFs, DIB, Trials, Tip missions, etc.  Today I ran a Yin, a Posi, a Numina, and 2 trials through LFG chat.  Yesterday I ran some DFBs, trials, an ITF, and some Hero tip missions via LFG chat.

I cannot even believe people are complaining about using LFG chat to form DFB teams.  A month ago you couldn't play at all and now people are complaining about people using LFG chat to get DFB teams and using DFB to level fast.  Here is a clue: the LFG chat is to look for teams.  People running DFB are looking for teams.

DFB was designed by the real developers as a trial to quickly level lowbies.  Paragon Wiki states "Death from Below (DfB) is a "sewer trial" introduced in Issue 21 available to both Heroes and Villains, but not Praetorians. This trial can be run at any level and provides exceptional rewards, including experience point bonuses and Single Origin Enhancements, making it an excellent and popular tool for players looking to level new characters quickly."

While I can understand the AE nerf due to the server issues caused by the way the AE missions were created, I have not heard anything stating DFB replicates those issues and doubt that it would since this is official content.

There is quite a bit of DFB going on right now because people are trying out various ATs and power combinations to see what they want to main or to recreate their old characters.  I don't see the issue with it and would not like to see official content nerfed due to a small number of complaints.  My take is that in a month or two the DFB craze will have died down significantly.  the only negative impact I see is that you have to scroll through LFG chat to find content you want to do.  Guess what?  That is a good thing because it means a lot of people are playing and teaming.

Unknot, man. It was a joke and I said as much.
