Where's my character?

I spent a good hour yesterday creating a character and made sure to save my progress. Upon logging into the same server this morning, my character could not be found. However, if I look in the costume folder on my computer, the file is there.

 

So I decided to start a new character and once I got to the costume screen I just loaded the saved character. I get up to the register screen and now I'm being told the name I gave my character is not available. Is this because my original character exists somewhere?

 

How do I retrieve my original character? :'(

The character doesn't actually get created in your account until you finish the creation and enter either a tutorial or a starting location. Until the character does get created, the name isn't reserved and anyone can grab it.
