As has been said, some villains just see the world differently: Thanos was someone you could empathize with - He wanted to save the universe...By sacrificing a few.

Well... One Thanos was.  The 616 Thanos was a nihilist who destroyed half the universe as a bouquet to his love.

Yup, honestly, the MCU messed this up, if you ask me, by leaving Death and his obsession with her out of the whole thing.

I'm out.

I'm somewhat on the fence about it.  Thanos isn't as well known as, say, Lex Luthor (though he's change A LOT in the comics as well as cinematic offerings), which allows for some potential rewrites.  The Green Peace Thanos we meet in Infinity War was more empathetic and actually tried to communicate with his emotions, while the Nihilist Thanos was just flat out more egomaniacal, which made him harder to come to grips with.  You actually see some of that in the presentation of both types of Thanos in Endgame, which is part of what makes that movie so epic.

On the other hand, it goes to show how even one villain can represent different motivations and personalities depending on when they are written, which is a good thing for us creating the villains, as it shows different ways of taking the same character and making them as multi-dimensional as we want.
