Black screen of failure when trying to launch

I installed the game, opened it and everything worked fine (still had a my character from 4 years ago!).  I exited the game and now it just launches to a black screen that doesn't do anything.  I uninstalled/reinstalled the game, and same thing.  Diagnostic client doesn't work, either.  Windows 10.

Were you playing City of Heroes on a monitor that isn't your main monitor?  Do you have an Alienware or Dell PC per chance?

In any case, in the Homecoming Launcher, go to options > Homecoming, and check "Reset graphics.".  That should do it.

Yeah, it's on my second monitor (primary gaming monitor).  PC is my own build, so not a Dell/Alienware.

Seems to have worked.

Okie.  This has been primarily an Alienware/Dell issue, but you're the third person I know now to experience the same issue on your own PC build.  I'm starting to suspect that it's an issue with some newer graphics cards in general.  They don't like OpenGL games.  Any OpenGL game played on a secondary monitor (not just City of Heroes), will work fine the first run, but then give a black screen after.

Regardless, you have three options:

  • Play City of Heroes on your main monitor.
  • Play City of Heroes on your second monitor, but move it to your main monitor before closing it, and then move it back to your second monitor when you play again.
  • Add the following under the Homecoming Launcher's settings Extra launch paramaters: -gfxreset

That last option will make the game reset your graphics every time you launch City of Heroes, and you'll have to redo your graphics settings each and every time you play.  That's what I do because I know that I'll forget to move the game to my main monitor before closing it.  I've been doing it for two years now, and it's quite annoying.

Those are your options until @Number Six or someone else manages to rewrite the game into Vulkan or something other than OpenGL.
