Raspberry Pi 5 installing City of Hero's

Requirements

  • Raspberry Pi 5 (At least 8GB RAM required)

  • 256MB MicroSD card (Recommended: Samsung Evo U3)

  • External Storage (Faster than 50MB/s or an SSD with a HAT attachment)

  • 64-bit OS (Ubuntu or Raspberry Pi OS)

  • Pi-Apps Utility

Installation Steps

1. Prepare the Raspberry Pi

Ensure your Raspberry Pi 5 is set up with a 64-bit operating system (Ubuntu or Raspberry Pi OS).

2. Install Pi-Apps

Open a terminal and install Pi-Apps using the following command:

wget -qO- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Botspot/pi-apps/master/install | bash

3. Install Wine

Once Pi-Apps is installed, open it and navigate to Wine x64.

  • Click Install.

  • If prompted, switch the Pi to a 4K page file.

  • Restart the Pi.

  • Reopen Pi-Apps and install Wine x64 again to ensure proper setup.

4. Verify Wine Installation

Navigate to System Tools in the Pi Start Menu and confirm the installation of the following Wine-related applications:

  • Wine Configuration

  • Wine Desktop

  • Wine Killer

  • Wine Program Manager

  • Wine Reset

  • Wine Task Manager

  • Winetricks

The only tool required for this setup is Wine Program Manager.

5. Download the City of Heroes Launcher

  • Go to the Homecoming Launch Download Page.

  • Download the launcher.

6. Install City of Heroes via Wine

  • Open Wine Program Manager.

  • Click the Install button.

  • Navigate to the downloaded launcher.

  • Proceed with the installation as usual.

7. Launch and Optimize the Game

  • Start City of Heroes.

  • Click on Quality Settings.

  • Lower all graphics settings to the minimum.

  • Once optimized, performance will be comparable to playing on a late 2009 Intel laptop with an integrated GPU no lag.

Made this so newbies to pi all together could start from a fresh os install  and navigate to installing City of heros.

pretty impressive for a sub 200 hundred machine.

Son of a gun!

Winlator 10 beta kept throwing OpenGL errors, but the latest stable version actually runs the game!

It really, really,  needs a mouse and keyboard, though!

I have a little bluetooth one with a touchpad I'm going to try one I get batteries for it.
