In what may be - unfortunately - one of the last of Apple TV’s mad little commissions, Martha Wells’ scifi/mystery/comedy MurderBot series gets the glossiest, starriest, goriest adap you could imagine…

 

 

Starring Alexander Skarsgard (Succession, The Stand) and David Dastmalchian (Suicide Squad, Late Night With The Devil), plus a host of random guest stars, our erstwhile AI hero tries to work out its place in the universe while handling daily danger on an unsurveyed world, the fear of discovery, an overarching fiendish plot, and trying to catch its favourite soaps.

 

I’ve not got round to reading the books though I’ve wanted to for a while. Looks an awful lot of fun to me. What say you?

I've only heard a little bit about their budget/ROI woes, but if that means I don't get more Foundation that would be disappointing.

Apple TV has always been a magnificent loss leader for the devices and gift cards and whatnot. But even the mystic gnomes of Cupertino can’t keep losing over $1bn per year off a $5bn budget.

 

Rumours are that they’re going to trim back to a mere $4.5bn and look for more commercial partnerships, so the crazy-inventive stuff that no-one but Apple or the BBC would have backed might not fly from now on.
