Scarlet Shocker Posted Tuesday at 09:12 PM Posted Tuesday at 09:12 PM I've always been an avid Marvel fan since my surrogate gran bought me a shittonne of British Marvel reprints in about 1969 and helped me learn to read with them. They were basically black and white with a colour wash, blue for FF, red for Spidey, green for Hulk... but I was hooked. They were the modern Greek and Norse legends in a contemporary setting. I've picked comics periodically since then but never really got DC. I love a few indie books, Watchmen, Maus, V for Vendetta, Y the last Man and of course Powers... as well as Hellboy etc but I'm really out of touch these days. I last bought stuff regularly about 24 years ago, Marvel Knights, stuff like that. If I were to pick up again, where should I begin. Like I say, Marvel and indie stuff please. No real interest in DC. How the hell am I even supposed to know if ignorance is bliss?
TTRPGWhiz Posted Wednesday at 12:18 PM Posted Wednesday at 12:18 PM I tend to follow writers rather than characters/teams. Marvel has a guy who’s been all over lately; Jed MacKay. He’s currently writing both Avengers and X-Men, and previously had runs on Moon Knight, Dr. Strange, some Spidey books, etc. Jason Aaron’s Thor, Ryan North’s FF are both super fun, too. 1
Ulysses Dare Posted Wednesday at 08:03 PM Posted Wednesday at 08:03 PM I stopped collecting around the same time as you, so I don't have any current suggestions (Powers was awesome). Someone that might be of help is Casually Comics, a YouTube channel dedicated to all things comic book. Sasha has several videos where she talks about recent offerings. Or deep dives into classic old ones, if that's your thing.
TTRPGWhiz Posted Wednesday at 08:31 PM Posted Wednesday at 08:31 PM Oh, if it's been that long, you might be interested in Secret Wars by Jonathan Hickman. Hickman essentially had the keys to the overarching Marvel storylines for a bit. Secret Wars was the payoff and it looks like it is, at the very least, one of the influences on upcoming MCU projects.
