Do we need ranged defense?

I was making a few tank builds which I will need help deciding on soon, when a thought occurred to me.

 

I was working on getting melee defense and as much s/l as I could. Then it occurred to me that most melee attacks have s/l in them and would be handled by s/l defense. It is the ranged attacks that tend to be pure like the psionic attacks.

 

Am I remember this wrong?

Depends the attack but generally speaking yes.

 

Depending the primary you're talking about will determine whether ranged defense is needed. For instance, Electric Armor doesn't really need ranged defense as it is a high resist based set.

 

Will Power has typed defenses, so you'd probably be better off adding to that rather than trying to add on a positional defense.

 

However for defense based sets, whether postional or typed defense, you'll want defense corresponding to those attack types (i.e. typed defense will want s/l/e/n/f/c/p/t defenses, and positional will want m/r/aoe defenses).

 

For resist based sets, I view defense as icing on the cake and almost always go for positional when I'm layering over the top of a resist set.

Yeah I was thinking about set that don't give any defense like Fire and dark armor. The three sets I am looking at are shield which I know what to do with and of course fire and dark.

 

I just wasn't sure what defenses to go for with resist sets.

Well all three are an easy answer: positional defense.

 

With Shield, it's your prime mitigation (and you'll hit soft-cap fairly fast). With Fire or Dark, you'll want to plug the resist holes first (e.g. energy resist for Dark) and then go for positional defense.

 

Generally speaking when building defense for a melee based toon, I start with melee, then ranged and then AOE.

OK, I gave the three builds I am looking at another once over. The goal for them is to fill the need for a tank and healer for said tank that I seem to find when I play with friends and whatever the LFG gives us for the summer event and TFs, so I decided to go for a self healing tank that I can take to incarnate levels.

 

This first one was the easiest one to build for. It is a shield/dark. I did take it to Justin and went into DA where the level 54 mobs are to fight groups of red minions and purple LTs and boss groups. It did really well except for that storm boss that took forever to kill because he spammed hurricane..

I also to this fire/dark out to DA and it performed well fighting those groups. I didn't have trouble once I remembered I have two heals.

What do you think about ways they can be improved?

Which one would work best for what I want to do?

Due to them all having dark melee, they all fit the concept for the character I will make.
