This.  Especially Conductive Aura.  It will drain ALL of the endurance from surrounding mobs.  Do you know what mobs do when they don't have any endurance?

Nothing.  They are "effectively" held.  Boom....secret controller win.

well, not nothing. They will still attack.. but they will tend to use the weakest lowest end cost attack which wont kill anyone.

  2. Ive always been of the opinion. Play what you want and how you want. Dont let other people dictate your fun.

But there is what I believe a lot of misinformation about City of Heroes based around individual perceptions and opinions of what is good and what isnt.

I would say get an understanding of IOs, IO sets and the bonuses from them. Those can help your build and not only for the " end Game " ( which I still dont know what that is after playing CoH for 15 plus years.. havent figured out where the END is yet), but while you are paying and leveling. Enhancement set bonuses do make a difference.

I have multiple level 50s ( 40+ ) fully built with IOs,Hamis etc etc and I have never spent 1 billion on a build. Spent 750m once.

I ony started using Damage Procs in the last year. There are some things they are very good for, especially giving some non damage powers a source of damage, like Infrigidate from Cold Manipulation. Some things I find they do a give little extra, I like using them in hold powers, but I don't think ANY of them are  "required" to do anything.

@The General if you would like, I can detail how to set up a series of binds so that when you either move or attack, you activate one of two buff powers.

I do this on all my Dominators and any character that has a click mez protection power, as well as Hasten. It works pretty well.

This is what I do. I have a left/right bind set up for hasten and domination. and I always place them next to each other. so I can easily see which one needs to be to be "clicked " and just move left or right and viola..

I also set this up for toons that have hasten and active defense

  4. First off... Let me say this.. Play what you want to play however you want to play it.

Sentinels depending on build can be effective both at range and in melee. You aren't relegated to hovering blasting on a Sentinel.

I play a few here are my favorites that have some " melee " ability

Fire/Rad/Fire Mastery Sentinel.- Attack that work well in Melee range. Fireball close range is a PbAoE basically. Inferno PbAoE Nuke up every 90 seconds. Ground Zero an exceptional " Proc Bomb" attack, and lastly Fire Sword Circle from Fire Mastery.  I also use Fire Cages and Rain of Fire in Melee Range as well.

Elec/Elec/Elec Sentinel. As others have mentioned Short Circuit is the gem here. A fast animating attack that does decent damage. However combine it with Power Sink from Elec Armor and you will drain most foes completely of their end bar, which allows for the SHOCKED proc mechanic to take effect.. Then throw Ball Lightning around. With Elec Mastery you have good choices for melee in Havoc Punch and Lightning Field. I chose Chain Fences because it does drain End along with Lightning Field which helps keep the SHOCKED proc mechanic triggering.

Dark/Bio/Dark Mastery. This toon was a surprise for me because I never made it with the idea to be as effective as it is. In fact one of my SG mates told me that it would probably wouldnt be good as Dark Blast has kinda of a " meh " reputation. Well. Its actually Quite good.

Umbral Torrent is a Cone, so that works well in melee range. Dark Obilteration is a Targeted AOE " dark Fireball " if you will. Works well at range and in Melee. Blackstar is your PBAoE Nuke up every 90 seconds. Throw in Netherworld Tentacles Cone  and Engulfing Darkness PbAoE and you have two more powers that work well in Melee.  You also have with BIO excpetional Survival tools.

Just my few SENTS thrown in.. ( Sents.. Cents.. ha ha bad pun )

    Additionally, pursue your Accolades.

Portal Jockey/Born in Battle is +5%  Health and +5% Endurance
Received the Atlas Medallion/Marshall also grant +5% Endurance.

These don't sound like they give you a lot.
    They don't.
However, they give you just enough to COMPLETELY change the performance profile of your character.

Throwing in the Performance Shifter Proc is probably the easiest and cheapest way to quickly bump your Recovery.  As it's roughly equivalent to an L50 EndMod IO in Stamina.  And after the first two slots, is BETTER than an EndMod IO due to the effects of Diminishing Returns.

Agreed,.. I never tend to do them.. but FREE 10% endurance is worth it..

Also keep in mind.. Performance Shifter is NOT unique. It works BEST in Auto Powers. You can slot several of them.

Tanks with Energy Mastery and Scrappers with Body mastery can stack 2 of them (Willpower Tanks and Scrapper can stack 3 ).

Brutes and Stalkers can really abuse this. Brutes that take Energy Mastery and Stalkers that take Body Mastery can stack 3.

Willpower Brutes can stack FOUR !!!!!!!!!

It's odd that the alt animation for the power is from Longfang, which has a cast time barely over 1/2 as long as Heavy Burst (1.33s vs 2.50s).  It seems to me that the alt animation for Heavy Burst ought to be Suppression.

Thanks. Thats kind of the way I feel  as well. It would be cool if there was some animation where all the arms fire at once... just one shot.... that would be a perfect "heavy burst" alternate animation

  7. Im currently trying a Level 40 Dom Ars/Ars and only have a couple of things..

I wont beat the level 1 sleep into the ground. Thats already been discussed. I do have an issue with the Gun Drone clone. I just wish it had a different look or appearance or the pet was replaced with something else maybe like the IDF Battle Orb instead to have a different flavor. Maybe even as someone else suggested a clone of the Incarnate Robotic Drone Power.. or that Robot Pet you can get in the P2W shop that shoots lasers ( cause who doesnt like Lasers? ).. For a new set to just clone the Gun Drone to me seems kinda.. meh..

As far as the Assault Power set.. im sorry and maybe this is just my opinion.. for most gameplay and teams I have been on Trip Mine is kinda useless, if it was something that you could detonate when you choose, it might be more interesting. I would have greatly preferred a grenade type power ported over from the VEATS like Venom Grenade or Frag Grenade over Time Bomb.

    thats my two cents..

Hover Blasting is for wusses. There, I said it. Get in the mix.

Edit... I find hover blasting super boring to play. If I'm doing anything like that it's on a defender.

Hover Melee... Well that's just a bird stalker, and it's not so effective.

Oh now I wouldnt say that.. I play my Nrg/Nrg Blaster Airhammer as a hover blaster hence the name.. One of my favorite things to do is drop down and hit the Nuke.. my SG used to call it " Death from Above"

I have quite a few of Sentinel 50s.  Probably 12 or more.  Not going back and counting.

The uptime argument is particularly dubious for two reasons.  1) it assumes the player struggles to keep the Blaster alive.  2) it assumes the Sentinel is that much hardier in an environment killing players. (Yes, they are hardier.  But in my experience what kills is an overwhelming turn of the odds, a bad decision, a surprise mechanic.  That is stuff a Brute or Tank might survive.  Maybe)

The "Try one" comment wasnt directed at you.. it's in response to when people say " people say Sentinels are terrible.. " etc etc

    Blaster Fireball  80 ft range 15 radius ((smashing 12.51 + fire (43.79+7.51x2.44) = 74.62)) 16sec rech

Sentinel Inferno PBAoE 20ft radius, buncha numbahs = 212.5  recharge 90sec

but number of targets i aint got memorized, etc...

if anyone wants to take this analysis further please do.  but off the top of my head i am still thinking that constant fireball is wayyyyy better than a Sent nuke.  and Blaster Fire has so many other party tricks, and then a nuke

Again.. build makes a difference..  You can isolate two powers.. but most people dont play this way...

    My Fire/Rad Sentinel..

Typical attack chain for Mobs is Fireball, Fire Sword Circle ( Epic ), Inferno, Ground Zero ( buncha Procs ) and that mob is usually dead.. or pretty hurt... and I still have Fire Cages and Rain of Fire if I need it...

And never worried about getting stunned, or killed when I run into a mob..

serious question...that i do not want to research....

arent most blasters non nuke "aoe ball" or "aoe cone" more effective than a Sentinel nuke?

Blaster because of their damage modifier in a single attack will do more damage that a Sentinel. And thats by design as Luminary points out very often Sentinels are ranged scrappers and have the same damage modifier as a scrappy but they do not crit.

However in the actual mechanics of playing its not as simply that cut and dry.

This is why I always say that the " build " of the characters matter.  While yes you CAN make a blaster more survivable with IOs and defense based build and Incarnates powers

(especially Clarion to mitigate stun), a Sentinel can do that same with IOs and Build.. but doesn't need Clarion. so they can take other Incarnate powers to accentuate their build.

There are quite a few Sentinel armor sets that not only have damage mitigation built in either through resistance or defense ( like a scrapper ), but they also have the ability to heal damage.

So the ability to mitigate damage, Heal Damage and NOT be mezzed means more up time.. More Up Time means more consistent damage. There have been many times I have been playing a Sentinel on teams and the blaster is dead, or stunned and I am still pumping out damage.

Now again that will depend on the build. My point is always that Sentinels are viable choices, try one and see if you like it..

Im the exact opposite.. LOL I hate that its showing the number mostly cause I am on Excelsior. People see big numbers and they think its a better server and there is more going on so more and more people join that server. Its like back in the day when Freedom and Justice were always struggling and lagging. My entire SG and our Favorite coalition people moved to Virtue.

Thank you all for your input!  This helps to settle my nerves a great deal and has convinced me my first toon to level 50 is going to be a Sentinal.

Just a word of advice. Dont care what other people think or say. Always play something for yourself and decide if you like it or not.

  14. Just throwing in 2 cents as someone who played a lot of blasters back in the day and now plays a lot of Sentinels..

Sentinels really depend on the build to some degree..

Everyone is correct.. Sentinels have a lower target cap for AoEs and Nukes..

However a Sentinel can pretty much with semi decent recharge have their Nuke up every mob.

One of my characters is a Rad/Fire Sentinel.  Having an Absorb Shield and a Heal is very beneficial, as well as the fact he cant be mezzed.

He has 4 single target attacks,  3 PbAoE attacks,  3 Ranged AoE attack ( Fire Cages, Fireball and Rain of Fire)

Add in Aim and Meltdown ( which is basically Build up with some end recovery built in )

Blasters are designed to be " glass cannons" Lots or burst damage, so they can take foe down quickly before the foes beat them. You can use IOs and Incarnate powers on a Blaster to get better defense, resistance, healing buffs etc etc.. but that usually comes much later, and with a lot of investment.

Sentinels get that as a part of their powerset, and they can still add IOs and Incarnate powers to layer on top,  and from my experience I have found that again depending on the sentinel build, I can continue to attack constantly because I dont get mezzed..

    Just my two cents

It was awhile ago, and yah, I power leveled by fire/ice tanker level 30+ killing level 50+ enemies at a time. Whole zones. Literally I remember going around a max level hazard zone at 30ish, running through the map hitting provoke on every stupid group I saw and generating a massive train of enemies until I basically had the whole zone. Jump in a dumpster, watch everything jump in after me stacking in the same spot, and then die to burn and ice patch. It was quite silly OP even back then. They nerfed it down through the years and many patches. At one point mega nerfed it to the point that when I logged on later at level 50, I couldn't kill lower level 40 regular mobs with the character.

I played this game since Issue 2. And there is  no way you couldn't beat a mob -10 level from you.

Here is what I would do if I were you. Log onto the test server. On the test server you can make a level 50 character and outfit in with basic S0's

    Then go fight some mobs...

Then decide if you want to play again or not
