  2. Hello. As we enter into yet another fun and exciting beta cycle, we would like to lay down some best practices for ensuring that this process is as productive as it can be, inspired by both dev and player feedback from previous cycles. (As I hope is obvious, the Code of Conduct and all its rules about being excellent to each other still apply as they do everywhere else.)

    1. ASSUME GOOD FAITH. The devs do not have a dastardly plan to destroy the game, nor are they trying to spite you personally. Acting as if they do is not useful feedback.

    2. BE CONSTRUCTIVE. Going on about how the devs are idiots and you have the One True Vision for the game is not helpful; trying to engage with the changes and the reasons given is.

    3. BE SUBSTANTIVE. If you want to say how great something is and nothing else, there's a thumbs up react. On the other hand, if all you really want to say is "this whomps! you suck!", the thumbs down react exists.

    4. DON'T JUST READ THE PATCH NOTES, TEST THE CHANGES. It can be easy to misread something and come to a conclusion separate from how the change actually functions. Even if you're sure you are going to hate something, it's best to get some actual data from it rather than just go off a gut feeling. Your conclusion will have far more power behind it if you can back it up with experience!

    5. DON'T GIVE FEEDBACK ON OTHER PEOPLE'S FEEDBACK. You're here to discuss and debate the changes with the devs, not each other. The devs are big people (Huge, even) and can stand up for themselves.

Violations of these guidelines or the CoC will result in hidden posts; repeated or flagrant violations may lead to harsher penalties. We will be keeping a pretty close eye on any points of particular conflict, so keep these in mind.

  3. Okay, I'm going to tell you all a little secret. If there's a suggestion made you really hate, do you know what's the best way to get people with colorful names to notice it? Yes, that's right, it's to make so many posts about how much you hate the suggestion that the thread grows three pages in an hour or two. If you don't want something to happen, perhaps you're better off ignoring the suggestion so nobody ever sees it. In other words: chill out.

  4. Perhaps, if you think someone is a troll who reads all your replies while twirling their mustache, you would be well-served by just not replying. If a troll trolls in the forest and nobody is around to reply to it, does it cause a flame war? No. (I also note that there's a wonderful ignored users function that you can access in the dropdown menu that arises from clicking your username. Just a thought.)

A minority of very vocal forum goers were offended and requested that the HC Team turn off the titles, post counts, and forum badges after the recent forum software update.

No, that's incorrect. Custom titles had nothing to do with the badge thing. Invision patched them out in the latest update, I believe.

During our normal maintenance window on Friday, November 26th (around 1400 UTC), we will be restarting all shards for deployment of Issue 27, Page 3. Expected downtime is no more than 2 hours.

Per Telephone. So if you can't log in tomorrow, that's probably why.

  7. Cipher will probably have more to say, but I'll just clarify a few things:

    - Forum rank/badges are part of the latest Invision update that Cipher did overnight (apparently Invision wanted to replace rep with something else, just without actually getting rid of rep?). We can't really get rid of it. The rank names are the default, I think; if they're editable, they'll probably get changed.

    - Also, it should probably be mentioned that what you're annoyed about is rank and badges are a separate thing, but that's just the pedant in me. Badges will probably get COHified a little Soon™.

    - The thumbs up and thumbs down reactions were added by request of the devs to make it easier to get feedback. We acknowledge the potential for abuse, but people were already abusing confused and sad to suggest the same thing as thumbs down.

It's okay to not reply to a thread you don't like.  It can quietly disappear in to the bowels of the archives.

I keep meaning to reply to this thread, but really, anything I say will just boil down to this. Just don't engage! It's not worth your time!

Personally I don't mind the "forums cops" confronting me.

What I do hate is when someone gets mad because I shut down their argument, so they log out of their personal account and into their mod account so that they can mod-smack me. It's one thing to get mod-smacked because I got a little heated and stepped over the line, it's a completely different thing to get mod-smacked because the other person's ego is stinging because you took their argument apart.

And do not waste my time telling me that this doesn't happen on this forum. I've been shown screenshots proving that it does and has happened.

We take all reports of GM misconduct seriously. Please feel free to PM me your concerns.
