I remember when it used to come in fancy bottles

That feels strange. A bottle of Newkie Brown and next to it a pint glass from Portland Maine?! Hah! But then I read that it's brewed in Holland now, so... bleh... forget I said anything.

Good catch.  Funny thing is there is a Newcastle, Maine about an hour north of Portland up the coast.

  2. I usually only see 1-3 mobs on most all maps in low end Praetoria (while playing at x1).  I also jog past a lot of mobs (not using stealth) to get to the end of the map to complete the mission, thus avoiding a ton of pointless clearing.  Mobs in Praetoria will not follow you unless you attack them or they are a scripted ambush.  Only a few of the ambushes you actually have to fight, and a lot of those give you NPC helpers.  There really is only one tough ambush and basically you just have to outrun it and try to defeat one guy before they catch up to you.

I've been on high level steamroll teams in today's game still get decimated by Gold-side factions.  I don't know which group it is, but one of them have what appear to be high-powered wide cones that will just chew through a lot of players.

Yes, gold side was expressly designed to be tougher for players.

Are you talking First Ward and Night Ward?  I agree those can be a challenge for the unprepared.  Nova Praetoria?  not so much.

  4. The only ambush I ever worry about is the one in Bobcat's arc when you finally find Shen.  Someday I would love to try that mission with a full AoE group and see how long we can last.  I find the Blast Master ambush annoying but have learned to just ignore them and concentrate on the mission objective.  The molotov cocktails don't hurt too bad.

I should also point out that there are two instances gold side where you are not meant to win fights.  You can encounter level 40 Anti-Matter at level 15-19, and level 40 Marauder at levels 20-29.  Those will go very badly for you.  You are not expected to win, you are expected to run like heck.  But the rest of CoH trains you to fight, so that generally isn't people's first instinct.

I don't think too many people have the patience to wait 5 minutes for Anti-matter to show   You have plenty of time to escape before he arrives.

    Not sure if trolling

Nope, not trolling.  I run half my 100+ characters through Praetoria (1-20) and I find it a much more enjoyable time than running blue side content.  I love the Praetorian sewers much more than the Primal ones and find the enemy groups generally more fun to deal with in Praetoria.  I solo all the time anyway so the lack of teams in Praetoria is no big deal.  The only actual challenging content I have run across is the last Hunt for Shen mission in Bobcat's arc.  I guess I just don't understand all the issues people have there.  You can jog past mobs if you don't want to fight them and they don't follow (except for scripted ambushes but those are a minor annoyance more than anything).

  7. I hear this stated a lot around the forums that Praetoria is so difficult, especially for new players.  I don't get it.  Early Praetorian content is way easier than Blue or Red side starting zones.  For one, travel is much easier with fewer zones and most importantly NO CAVE SYSTEMS (I'm looking at you layer cake cave).  Enemy groups are also easier to deal with for the most part.  The only difficult part of Praetoria is trying not to out level the contacts or doing certain contacts out of order resulting in a missing contact.  If you don't care about completing all the missions Praetoria is one of the fastest and easiest means to get to level 20 outside of AE.

Thanks! Yeah, I'll probably 'remix' the scheduling a bit, so that I 'mostly' stick to my chosen faction, but switch just long enough to pick up the last one in each zone...

Just remember that if you want to complete all story arcs you have to complete some arcs before others (finish Doctor Steffard's arc before doing the last mission for Interrogator Kang, don't start missions for Calvin Scott until you complete Crow and Helix's arcs)

Bit of thread necromancy here, but heck, I used to run a Zombie Mastermind in CoV, so it's on brand...

As a completionist, I've found the guide at the top extremely useful for making sure I see everything Praetoria has to offer before outleveling it! But I have a question. The guide has you switching sides at virtually every chance you get - essentially playing as someone who either suffers from Chronic Backstabbing Disorder (keep forgetting to take those pills!) or someone with a Jekyll/Hyde type split personality. If you DON'T wanna do that... if you just stick purely to Rebels or Loyalists - perhaps just playing as someone who's a bit on the fence about whether ends actually justify means, or whether great power actually does come with great responsibility - and play the opposite content as Deep Cover Agent, reporting in to your superiors at every chance and always picking the 'right' option in the end-of-arc moral choices... (maybe just switching back and forth ONCE to establish your bonafides with the other side, and get that one badge...)

...can you still do all four full storylines? And get all four of the end-of-story badges?

You have to be Loyalist to get Power missions and you have to be Resistance to get Crusader missions.  You can do 3 of the 4 arcs per zone without switching sides.  However, the game is designed around you switching sides to maintain your cover as a double agent.  If you want to get all the badges you need to switch at least once per zone.  You do not need to switch alignments to get the Moral High Ground badge (for 5 alignment choices), simply complete 5 alignment missions.

  10. Over my 100 or so characters on my primary account I run half Blue side and the other half as Gold side versions.  Blue side I usually do the Arachnos and Skulls arcs, then work through Steel to Faultline, Striga, and Croatoa.  Gold side I do a complete all run (turning off xp at levels 10/15/20 to get all the missions) then make my way to Faultline, Striga, and Croatoa once I go thru the portal.  I run mostly the same content but using different powersets and playstyles keeps it fresh.

So he's still a professor?  Interesting considering that to do this study he violated every single ethics rule there is in psychological research.

    1. He did not inform the IP owners of the game that he was conducting a study on their players, nor did he get their consent to perform this "study."

    2. He did not inform the players that they were participating in a psychological study.

    3. He did not bother to find out if any of the players he was bullying were minors.

    4. He did not get player consent to participate in the "study."

    5. He did not get the consent of minor players' parents to allow them to participate in the "study."

    6. He did not offer psychiatric counseling to players who were traumatized by his "study."

By all rights he should have lost his job.  He, and Loyola, could have been sued by the company, the players, and the minor players' parents.

The only reason he escaped what would have been an appropriate firing is because he was employed by the mathematics department.  The people in his department are not psychiatric professionals and thus "technically" do not have to abide by the ethics of psychiatric professionals.

Which is a little like someone employed by the mathematics department torturing puppies "for a study", then claiming that they don't have to abide by the ethics of the biology department.  Technically, they don't.  But that doesn't make torturing puppies right.

Yes, he got dragged up in front of the Ethics board.  He also lost a book deal.

I know this, because I was the one that contacted the Dean and pointed out how the University could have been sued by the players and parents of the minor players.  I contacted the book company and pointed out they could be sued too.  The book company dropped him like a hot rock.  The University wimped out after slapping him on the wrist.

Hey VV, glad to see you are still hanging around.  I hope you are still enjoying the game.  Thank you for all you did back in the dark days of the sunset.  Although TF Hail Mary didn't pan out, you helped keep hope alive.  It was that hope that led me to the news of the secret server and eventually to Homecoming.  Thank you.

Even with the supposed reduced FPS, I'm noticing so graphical peculiarities on the XBsX for sure. If you've ever seen that weird vector projection effect (a line popping out of nowhere) in old games, then that's a thing for sure. It's rather annoying AF as I'll get random lines that may or may not relate to the companion's aiming, but it's mostly when just walking around.

The only weird behavior I have seen is a couple of npc pathing issues.  One time my companion ended up standing on someone's desk during a quest conversation.  It was funny how the quest npc was looking up at my companion during the conversation.  With over 50 hrs in so far and only seeing a minor pathing issue is pretty good.  I haven't seen any issues like what you describe.  Maybe that is isolated to the console?
