  1. I have the same problem with a lot of the posted builds, many of which haven’t been played and are pure theorycrafting.  When I post builds to threads, they’re only built out to the level I’ve played the character, with real-world slotting instead of a wish list.  It’s fine to look at the possibilities, but when I’m playing a character up to 50 I want practical advice from someone who has been there.

  2. I believe I mentioned it earlier in this thread, but damage type is a factor in choosing attacks from power pools.  Arcane Bolt is great for Gravity controllers because it allows them to do energy damage against foes highly resistant to smashing damage.  Likewise, a Fire sentinel might like one (or more) of the Fighting pool powers for use when fighting foes highly resistant to fire.

    As for the Sorcery pool...it is really, really good, but I think that was the original design intent for Sorcery (and the other origin-themed pools that haven’t been implemented).  However, there are niches for all the other pools where you may want to use them instead.  Plus, not every power in Sorcery is useful to every character.  Rune of Protection is a great panic button, but many people build characters in a way where they don’t feel they need panic buttons.  I just got Spirit Ward, and according to the info screen it only lasts for 15 seconds...useful, but without a LOT of recharge you won’t have it running all the time, and your other power chains would suffer if you did use it every 15 seconds.

  3. Destination screens aren’t an issue - that could be a visual representation of a schedule, like you might see at a bus station.  I could even use the alphabet letters to label each destination, if I have enough room for it.  I may give this a try this weekend.

  4. If you’re only going to be at 40+ range, it’s worth saving up to start getting the Sentinel Archetype set IOs.  Each set gives a +7.5% range bonus when 3-slotted, so if you divvy the two sets up between 4 different powers then you can get up to +30% range on everything.

  5. You can use the Guides area of the forum, but it could get lost in the noise.  My suggestion would be to change the Archetypes section to Powersets, then list the individual Archtypes as subforums of the Powersets forum, and either having the main Powersets section be for power pools or create an additional subforum for them.

  6. Just to note: crafting rare recipes is a mug's game, now, because rare recipes require rare salvage. And thanks to the "bucketing" system the market uses, no piece of rare salvage is ever going to cost less than 800,000 Inf or so. So, there's no way you can make money that way.

    Saw rare salvage going for 600-650k the other night.  As more people use converters to get rare set IOs instead of crafting them with rare salvage, the price of rare salvage is going to continue to drop because of high supply and low demand.  It will probably continue to drop until enough recipes are worth crafting with rare salvage because they’re a better deal than rolling the dice with enhancement converters...

    (22 in-set conversions last night to get a LotG Defense/Recharge to convert to a Defense/Increased Global Recharge.  Should be a 1 in 5 chance.  The random number generator hates me.)

  7. One thing about the melee attacks is that they work as kinetic combat set mules for sets with typed defenses - getting almost 4% S/L def is pretty great considering how hard it is to get S/L def on a character with only ranged attacks.

    I guess it depends on your build and play preferences.  I like set bonuses, but I don’t like them so much that I’ll spend several slots on a power I never end up using.  That’s also why I have a hard time taking Fighting, because I’m “wasting” a power slot to open up Tough and Weave.

    I'd also say the PBAoE attacks are super worth it for any sentinel with a cone attack - breath of fire is pretty shitty to be honest.  I dropped it in favor of psychic shockwave and didn't look back - easier to hit multiple targets, higher number of potential targets hit, same-ish recharge.

    Why not both? :)

    I’m pursuing the exact opposite with my Sentinel - raising my defenses against ranged and AoE where I can, and doing my best to stay out of melee by using Hover.  I’m even going as far as considering the two Sentinel-specific IO sets (expensive!), and breaking them up by putting 3 each in 4 different powers to get a total +30% range boost, since each set gives +7.5% range as the 3-slot set bonus*.  Scrapper defenses plus blaster range is pretty nice, and that’s the main reason I’m considering Fire Mastery (to get the AoE Immobilize that keeps foes at range).

    * I’ll probably break up one of the two sets to go into two different powers, and keep the other intact in a single power.  That’s +22.5% range, or 73.5 on a range 60 blast without any other range enhancements.

  8. Well, to look at Fire Mastery as an example, since I have a Fire/Fire sentinel:

    * Fire Cages (AoE Immobilize) - VERY useful, especially with Rain of Fire.

    * Cremate (high damage melee) - Sentinels have high damage ranged attacks, so this seems redundant).

    * Char (Hold) - Holds are useful.

    * Fire Sword Circle (PBAoE) - If you didn’t have enough AoE in your primary.  Easily skippable for Fire Blast sentinels.

    * Warmth (PBAoE heal) - Incredibly useful, though I’d have to see the exact numbers on heal and recharge time.

    For comparison, here’s Psionic Mastery:

    * Mass Hypnosis (AoE Sleep) - Sleep and Immobilize are both useful to Sentinels, in different ways. Immobilize is better if you’re using lots of AoE attacks, but Sleep can keep attackers docile while you take out their buddies.

    * Mind Probe (Melee, -Recharge) - Seems redundant, but could be useful for the right build.

    * Dominate (Hold) - It’s a hold.

    * Psychic Shockwave (PBAoE Damage +Disorient) - Isn’t this the tier 9 power in Mental Manipulation (the Blaster secondary)?  Another power that forces you into melee range...but not a bad one, especially with a chance to disorient.

    * Link Minds (Team +DEF, +Hit, +RES Psy) - This is the power that makes the power pool shine.  A team boost with added Defense (helps with softcap), Accuracy, and Psionic Resistance.

  9. By the same token, once you're on a team that's that well-prepared, isn't the damage (either directly or through our support inherent) the most important thing we bring to the table, leaving defense vs. resistance less relevant?

    Yes...if it’s truly a well-prepared team, your defenses will rarely be an issue.  However, I find that most teams aren’t well-prepared, especially PUGs (pick-up groups).  My weekly group includes my daughter and a friend’s two daughters, all teenagers.  They’re still learning the ropes, and I find being a sentinel makes me much more survivable in this group than I would be as a blaster.  I’ve survived near-wipes that took out the rest of the party thanks to my defensive set.

  10. Force Field is a bit simpler to play and cheaper to build, but I think Time simply has more tools.  Having a PBAoE heal is great, and Farsight can easily be perma with lots of defense to give to your bots.  That’s without mentioning the location AoE slow, targeted debuffs, and a reliable hold (that can affect bosses if you use Time Crawl first).  It may take more effort to cap defense when soloing (only needed for higher-difficulty content), but in a group you should be fine, especially if slotting the IOs that increase pet defense and/or resistance.

  11. I agree that resists are important too, and you're right you can cascade fail with def. The thing is, resist sets are actually even MORE vulnerable to defense cascade failures because they have less debuff resist and have less defense for avoiding -def abilities to begin with.  Yes, it's more reliable in the sense that it will more uniform in the time it takes to die, but...a def character at the def cap will effectively survive twice as long on average than someone sitting at the sentinel resist cap without defenses.

    You’re quite correct.  That said, once you’re a part of a team, it’s a lot easier to get +DEF (mostly wasted when you’re capped) than +RES.  Someone running Farsight from Time is giving at least +10% DEF, and a Defender with Force Field will get significantly higher.

  12. If I slot 2 +Resistance aura IOs into Singularity (Sovereign Right and Expedient Reinforcement), will I get their full benefit or will I hit a resistance cap?

    Trick question:  Are You A Pet?

    The answer to the trick question will provide you the same answer to your question.

    Fine, will the PET hit a resistance cap?

  13. One other thing to take especial note of is the slotting of the Overpowering Presence ATO set into Wormhole ... and specifically its proc for summoning additional "allies" to attack whatever $Targets you'll be pushing through the Wormhole.  Use of this set on an AoE power like this increases the chance to proc the summons, hopefully increasing the odds of successfully summoning them when using Wormhole, which would make for a very interesting combination I'm thinking.

    One problem with this is that Wormhole doesn't cause aggro.  Sometimes I just want to rush through a mission, and I use a combination of flight, stealth, and Wormhole to avoid combat.  Having foes aggroed from the proc triggering isn't always a good thing.  Maybe put the Overpowering Presence proc in Crushing Field, instead?

  14. Is anyone else worried about the ability to change rarity via converters damaging the long-term health of the market?  The net result is that many recipes that use rare salvage are not used anymore - you can convert an uncommon into a rare without too much difficulty.  Many enhancements are simply not viable compared to other recipes that are as effective (or more effective), and can be obtained by converting within a category (2 converters) and/or within a set (3 converters).  It's not cheap in converter cost, but if you're going to be paying 2 million anyway for a sub-optimal choice, why not play the converter lotto and get exactly what you want for close to the same price?  The end result is that a few uncommon recipes that are in the right categories are in huge demand, and the demand for most rares in that category is nonexistent.

    Demand still remains high for rare salvage, because there are highly-desirable rares that are cheaper to get by crafting the recipe than by playing the converter lotto...and you can get the recipe you want via merits without having to deal with a random number generator.  However, this prices out the less experienced players that don't know about these tricks, and just want to build the recipes that dropped for them during gameplay.

  15. (And this, by the way, is why you should never slot the IOs you make if you’re planning to Attune them immediately. This is a mistake I made starting out, and wasted huge amounts of money before I learned the market Attunes for free. It’s kind of counterintuitive, but if you’re tempted to slot up and Attune some Kinetic Combats you just received from a conversion, it’s far better to sell them and then re-buy the same ones pre-Attuned.

    A little tip on getting the Attuned IO you want when you have an unattuned version..  If you have the cash, place a bid with one character, and sell with a different character at the same price.  There are three possible outcomes.  First, you end up selling the item to your alt.  Second, the item will sell for more than you bid and you can use the cash to do what’s necessary to craft/convert your way into another copy of the IO.  Third, you could end up buying someone else’s IO and be out the money...but you’ll have the attuned IO and an unattuned IO that you can list and sell normally.

    If you’ve gotten multiple copies of the IO, the process is easier.  If you sell an IO on the market, then in that moment the highest price being bid for that item is what you got from the sale.  So, for example, if I sell a Luck of the Gambler global recharge for 7.5 million, I know the highest bid at the moment of the sale was 7.5 million.  The less ‘churn’ on sales for that IO, the more valuable this information is to you.  Generally, high-priced items sell less often than cheaper ones, though there are exceptions.

    Use the global email system to transfer the normal IO to an alt, then put in a bid just slightly higher than the expected sell price for the attuned version.  Change to the alt, and put the IO up for sale at the exact price you listed it for with the other character.  You should end up with a sale, as your original character buys the attuned version for the amount you listed it for, and your alt gets the money from the sale (which can be emailed back to the original character).  Yes, you’re out the listing fee, which is notable, but it’s a lot cheaper than just throwing up a bid and hoping it sticks.  If someone outbids your bid, you get extra money that you can use to repeat the process of crafting and converting to get another copy.  The only undesirable result is buying the IO from someone else before you sell your copy, which is only bad if you paid more than what you can turn around and get by listing the unattuned IO and having a bit of patience.

  16. Does this mean secondary sets like /Dark are even better, because they can slot the two unique IOs from the Recharge Intensive Pets sets?  That frees up slots from your three mastermind pet types.

  17. Proposed Ranged Damage IO Set:  Longshot (30-50) - Rare

    * Accuracy/Damage

    * Accuracy/Damage/Range

    * Accuracy/Range/Recharge

    * Damage/Range

    * Damage/Range/Recharge

    * Damage/Endurance/Range

    Set Bonuses:

    * 2-slot - Movement +4.5%

    * 3-slot - Recovery +2%

    * 4-slot - Accuracy +7%

    * 5-slot - Ranged defense +2.5%

    * 6-slot - Increase range by 5%, AoE defense +2.5%

  18. If you just want more pets, have the Tier 1 give an extra zombie at level 10, or even two extra (at levels 10 and 14).  However, that could cause problems, both from a programming and control standpoint, and the pets would have to be carefully balanced  Having multiple masterminds is bad enough on CoT cave maps...

  19. There is a mission arc in game that uses your character model as a nemesis of sorts, but I agree that being able to design your own nemesis would be cool.  I could see it being abused slightly - for example, a player with a Psionic Blast blaster designs her nemesis to have Invulnerability as a defensive set.

    Of course, if this is viable, you wouldn’t want to call it a Nemesis, for the reasons listed in the thread.  Perhaps ‘Adversary’ would be a better name.

    If a Nemesis-style system is a bridge too far, there is another option.  Perhaps along the lines of the mission arc in game, you design an alternate universe version of yourself as an evil mirror.  You get to customize the costume and a few other things, but the game uses your powerset for them.  There’s already code in the game for that...it would just need to be adapted to allow for customization.

  20. I think the biggest problem with the archetype is that you are forced into taking both of your initial blasts to be able to access your archetype abilities.  I’d prefer to skip one of the first two powers in the blast set, but I need the first one for Offensive Opportunity and the second for Defensive Opportunity.  In contrast, Dominators get a button to activate their archetype ability without needing to choose a specific power to access it.  Changing the archetype to grant buttons to activate the opportunity would allow for a wider variety of builds.  Alternatively, just give a button for Defensive Opportunity, and have Offensive Opportunity activate when either of the first two blasts in the blast set are used.

  21. In the ranged damage IO sets, there is a distinct lack of +Range enhancements.  In fact, the only two I can find are Damage/Range in Far Strike, and Accuracy/Damage/Endurance/Range in Salvo.  Both those sets top out at L25.  Is there a way we can get a range-specific set that goes to level 50 (call it Longshot or something similar)?
