Replace Spectral Wounds with a single target immobilize, any will do. Maybe it randomly picks an illusory element from fire, ice, or electric.

Replace Phantom Army with whatever dominate-able AoE you think works. There aren't currently any cone shaped Stuns in a control set, that could be a possibility. There are also no PBAoE click Confuses or Sleeps.

A PBAoE immobilize doesn't yet exist, either, and could fit nicely in a set with SI in the primary.

This leaves three powers that could benefit from domination and none of them are moderate recharge group controls like a group immobilize, stun, confuse, fear etc. Hard to make it Dominator friendly without completely changing the nature of the set.

Many dominator primaries have problems with not benefiting from domination. Earth (earthquake, volcanic gases), electric (jolting chain, static field, synaptic overload [only 1st target dominated]), fire (bonfire), darkness (shadow field), gravity (dimension shift, impact mechanic), ice control (ice slick, slows in general).

Some sets are more effected than others, but the "not domination friendly" argument doesn't hold water; many sets are currently not domination friendly. And dominators =/= domination. Dominators = control + damage. Illusion control, as is, provides control in the form of super awesome taunting pets.

Illusion Control seems to me like it may need to be split into Illusion Control (dominator version) and Illusion Assault.

Spectral Wounds, Group Invisibility, and Phantom Army go to the Assault set, with the strength of the rest of the attacks balanced around the value of PA.

Replace Spectral Terror with a spherical version of Fearsome Stare.

Having Illusion Control keep Improved Invisibility is fine and within the rules for control sets for Dominators (e.g. Plant has Spirit Tree).

Overall I think of Phantom Army as a soft control power, and therefore a better fit in the primary. The only pet doms get in their secondary at current is voltaic sentinel, which has it's... problems.

PA remaining in the primary would allow for more primary to secondary pairings.

That said, I'd take PA in an assault set and play the shit out of, too.

  3. Illusion doms would be amazing. I honestly don’t think the set would need to be changed at all. Just port as is.

Some may say that the set won’t benefit enough from domination. But realistically it has 3 powers which would (single target hold, single target confuse, aoe confuse). This is very par for the course, as most sets have 3-4 powers which benefit from domination. No ground effect benefits from domination!

Example: Earth has single target immob (lol), aoe immob (less useful than quicksand in most scenarios), single target hold and aoe disorient. So really just 2 useful powers that benefit from domination. Electric control is similar (chain confuse only dominates on the first target, ground sleep doesn’t benefit at all). Some sets are better, but you get the idea.

Anyway, I’d also like to see “energy control.” To match energy assault.

  4. I don’t have a fire/psi, so ymmv, but yes, it can get a lot better.

Get 45% ranged defense. Or as close as you can. All my doms take the fighting pool. It should be possible to keep the fire epic and get much better defense.

Powers to skip in fire: smoke, aoe hold. Not useful enough.

Powers to skip in psi: most ranged attacks. Terrible dpa.

Post a build and we can give some more precise advice.

The difference between Controllers and Dominators is basically their AT modifier and their secondary power sets as they, to the best of my knowledge, have the same primary sets.

Controllers get illusion control, but dominators do not. That's the only primary that differs between them.

How I pine for illusion on a dominator...

Otherwise controllers have longer base duration on their mez effects and can critical control, while doms have higher damage in the primary and have domination.

  6. FWIW, perma dom with high ranged defense is easiest on those primaries with a confuse. Purple confuse set + the ATO set for 20 recharge and 10% ranged defense goes a long way.

    Not cheap of course.

    1)  Give veteran levels a benefit.  Thinking 5 more insp slots at levels:  33, 66, 99.

Nah. I actually think they should get rid of vet level rewards and incarnate xp in non-incarnate content. Too many freebies.

  8. @oedipus_tex I agree that this is a problem, and I agree that standardizing single target hold animation time should be done. Much like it has been done for single target immobs in the blaster secondaries.

For mind, I'd frame the discussion around dominate, not the single target sleep.

Regarding secondary effects, I'd take @oedipus_tex approach and not attempt to balance animation times on a power-for-power basis considering the secondary effects. Secondary effects are best understood in the context of the entire set. Most are basically useless against a held enemy, anyway, -def and fire's +dmg being the exceptions.

While we're at it, I'd probably make Jolt in Electric Control a 1.32 second animation, too. Something about chain mechanics has me wanting them to cast quickly.

Regarding AoE immobs, yes, same thing. Please.

  9. I have a plant/fire that I've been switching back and forth between /ice and /fire for the APP.

I love him. Can't go wrong with fire. You can get loads of AoE with /fire for your APP because Embrace of Fire boosts Rain of Fire and Fireball. Amazing ST too. Overall probably the most damaging secondary. My current build is both Fire Breath and Combustion, but I'll probably drop Fire Breath and go back to /fire for my APP.

Psi is good. I haven't gotten one past the twenties because I don't like the feel of the secondary. The secondary is really Drain Psyche and Psychic Shockwave. The cone has good range but is still a cone and is slow activating. The single target range attacks are not very good. The single target melee attacks are good, but it's hard to make a complete chain out of them, and they don't compete with the options available in say Savage Melee or Earth Assault.

You might think about Energy, too. I haven't rolled one yet, but it has comparable ST damage to /fire, no cone, but trades that for an interesting mechanic to it's PBAoE. Power build up is nice for making your controls last a little longer too, I suppose. I may eventually pair this with Dark or just roll another plant lol.

I would like to see a couple powers in Mind Control get an update. But as for mass hypnosis, why not make it a pulsing sleep, like static field in electric. Or make it an aoe disorient. Something to give it more value and help mind players out with aoe control.

It doesn't pulse like Static Field in electric control because it is non-notify.

Many people love mass hypnosis exactly as it is, because it is so useful for soloing. Far less useful in a group, but still has its uses.

I would't change it at all.

In regards to the alpha. Why did you go with Intuition I mean Musculature or agility seems a better idea imo. This is not criticism I just want to see what your perspective is. Looking at your build I took Maneuvers out of leadership and replaces with Hoarfrost and added agility its basically the same buff. Any thoughts?

Agility will kill your proc rates.

Intuition has hold duration and damage.

Musculature has only a little bit more damage to offer.

Yep I know. It's just lame when the only AoE damage is "once every 30 seconds". But that's why I've never gotten Mind out of the teens. I'd rather play a set that does more damage.

Yes, mind is very low damage and that should probably be looked at.

I understand the feels around the quantum leap when achieving perma-dom (or being short of perma-dom), but I don't know that adding another health/endurance bar tied to a toggle is viable.

I have a strong (negative) opinion about requiring a Dominator to be (even more) 'active' to maintain perma-dom. As it is, many builds require using powers with the Force Feedback +Recharge %proc (occasionally in powers that don't require targets) and/or balancing Domination/Hasten clicks.

    Yes.

I don't really want domination to change. I like it how it is. Any change will come with some form of a nerf.

I think it'd be groovy to bump Levitate into Mass Levitate, or convert Mass Hypnosis into Mass Stun - an AoE Stun that does damage like the new Headache mechanic that's coming out in Sonic.

Mass hypnosis is a non-notify sleep.

Many people would be extremely upset with such a change.

If I do a page for each blast set it allows for comparison between sets.

Makes sense if that is the intended use.

That said, people might be interested in making comparisons for a fixed assault set - "which primary gives savage assault the most dps?"

Or just tweaking within a given fixed setup - "where can I put this last slot for the most dps?"

In both of those cases, I would probably just copy/paste the primary worksheet and save a bunch of configurations until I found a favorite.

  17. I've come around to combat teleport much more. For the right character it's pretty amazing and stands on its own with out defense slotting.

Please make it usable in nova and dwarf forms though. In nova for setting up cones from eclipse, mire, mire, and in dwarf because that damn floating is so, so annoying.

Plants/thorns seems a bit pet-heavy... am I right to think that?

I do like Dark - the secondary effect makes it very solo-friendly. Likewise Ice, from what I gather. Fire has the added bonus that Fiery Orb is fiery, so it wouldn't be a thematic issue.

What would you say is the most melee-friendly secondary is?

Well plant has the fly trap + creepers. Creepers are awesome though. They don't "feel" like a pet. I wouldn't say plant feels like a pet heavy set. It's all about Seeds of Confusion. Hit seeds, then go to town blowing things up. If your fly trap and creepers are alive/nearby, great. If not, you probably won't notice.

The Fiery Orb sucks. I suggest avoiding that set altogether. Or maybe split it up for bonuses. I generally don't use that set.

Earth is probably the most melee friendly. Many hard hitting, satisfying melee attacks, including an extreme damage hold. Early access to its melee PBAoE. Melee dmg aura. No cone - instead has a short range TAoE (small area, but usable in melee range).

  19. I really love combat teleport.

    I won't use it.

The movement advantage is similar to CJ and Hover, but doesn't allow for LoTG slotting or a defense buff (both of which my builds always need more of). I'd use it in some builds if it provided defense. As is, it's a poor pick relative to CJ/Hover.

Fold space is cool. I'd like to see a shorter cooldown.

If combat teleport could be used in Nova and Dwarf, then I'd pick it up on my warshade.

I'd love it if fold space could be used in dwarf form. That would make me pick it up for sure. Human form only... maybe for eclipse grouping?
