If that player hadn't played since an early issue then maybe there was a lot that was different.

I remember when the game first came back, there were people endlessly bellyaching on Reddit about how the private servers—usually Homecoming—had changed the game in some way. Nine times out of ten the change they were gripping about had been made by Paragon Studios. The person had just stopped playing before that issue dropped.

There's also the matter that Cimerora is under the guardianship of the Midnighters' Club and is accessible through their property.  Access to their properties used to be via a mission arc only, but even today when it is a quick run over to Night Ward for a badge unlock, it still requires something to unlock access to the Club doors, signifying the Midnighter's permission.

It's also worth noting that, once you've unlocked Cimerora, you can get there via the Ouroboros portal. I'm not sure when that got added.

Probably what throws you looking at them walking around is that the actual enemy mobs never walk.  They always hover.

Yeah, even in a still photo that raised leg is weirding me out.

I'm really starting to hate this thing that internet people do where they accuse people of whining whenever they discuss a subject that they don't want discussed.

You mean like how you asserted back at the start of this thread that anyone who objects to the name purge is one of those ebil name campers? Physician heal thyself.

Guys, it was posted on April 1st.  C'mon.  Do the math. 😄

What happens when, a month from now, some new player uses search to find money-making advice and lands on this post? It's a good thing some people decided to point out its flaws even it the OP was a troll. Also, Poe's law doesn't get April 1st off.  On the small chance that they're on the level, it's good to at least try to educate them.

  6. I always start with a concept. It might be a name, or a power combo, or a theme but there's always a starting point. Usually that concept will also point me toward a particular look.

However, sometimes I simply have no clear idea what the character should look like. On those occasions I've used the random button for inspiration. It's never to make the full costume though. Hit the button, look over the results, see if anything catches my fancy. Once something does, work from there to finish out the costume.

  7. Just saw this one. It was definitely flawed but not as bad as the buzz had lead me to fear. Certainly less of a mess that Love & Thunder.

    PROs:

    Kamala is just delightful.

Carol Danvers is much less wooden that she was in Captain Marvel.
Nick Fury isn't sleepwalking through this one like he did in Secret Wars.

They made good use of Goose.

    That Bollywood number was hilarious.

    The post-credits scene.

    CONs:

Way too much plot crammed into too little runtime.

Too much audience homework expected. I've seen Wandavision and Ms. Marvel. If I hadn't, the movie gave me little reason to care about Kamala or Monica.

Monica is still lacking in development. As a fan of her version of Captain Marvel, I find this particularity annoying.

It's a very real problem, as evidenced by all the people who have been begging HC to push the release policy.

That people think something is a problem doesn't actually prove it is one. It also doesn't mean that the solution those people have dreamed up is a good one.

What does Homecoming gain from this, besides the hope that NCSoft demanding a shutdown is less likely and possibly more hosting options?

I'm not privy to Homecoming's plans for the future but I'd guess that having a license from the IP owner makes a number of things easier. Server hosting, for example, can now search for a combination of price and reliability without having to prioritize "doesn't care about piracy". Openly advertising  our existence is another possibility. And I know of a least one person who's more willing to make an account thanks to the cloak of legitimacy the license provides.

But, I guess it is more fun and dramatic to talk about all the ways something is impossible right?

Seems to me all the drama is coming from the folks insisting the impossible really isn't.

Yeah, okay, maybe it's not absolutely impossible if we had NCSoft's cooperation. But we don't. Indeed that database was scrubbed precisely because NCSoft demanded it.

If you still have the original e-mail address or whatever identifying information, get your character data back and imported into your account, same way it was done on the original "underground" server (the guy who ran that was uber paranoid the SWAT team was going to bust down his door at any second).

Here's the problem with that, as I understand it. The character database was just that: a data base of characters. It didn't contain any account information because it came from Paragon Studios, who never had access to that info. Instead, when you logged in the NCSloft account server verified your ID then passed along a token to Paragon saying, essentially, "this is legitimate user XYZ".

The secret squirrel server could figure out whose account was whose by simply looking up the character names. Something you can do when you run a tiny private shard full of people you've personally vetted. It's not a process you can scale up to a public server the size of Rebirth or Thunderspy, much less Homecoming. Even if the data base did still exist, there's no quick and simple way to just hand everyone back their characters.
