Or maybe your were trolling... Better have been trolling...  No touchy!!!  It wasn't even an argument from what I could tell, certainly none one that has the solution of: nerf the best AoEs because if we can't agree the T9 powers should go on strike!

In all honesty though, AoE's in general should be feared or at least respectable with large numbers of enemies hit (not target cap would be the most ideal) and in the case of a high level AoE damage power, it needs to hit like a freight train... that is on fire... and driven by a crazy hamster of doooooom who wants to kill all the humans.

Also this is a game about superheroes and supervillains.  I'd like to have characters that feel super.

It's not City of Mediocre Vigilantes and City of Ordinary Criminals🤣  As amusing as those titles may sound, I suspect it would lose interest quickly.  But you are welcome to setup your own CoH server and try!   Who knows, I mean people spend extreme amounts of time collecting virtual objects in survival MMO games right?  (Day-Z, Rust, Ark, Eve Online, etc...)

I already laid bare my intentions for why I personally find value in spending time in CoH.  Tried to add something with value and heartfelt meaning.  Ah well... Was worth a try...

It was primarily an attempt to see why people don't like these level changes. I don't think the T8's or T9's are too strong but I figured the people not wanting this change thought the T8's and T9's were (and thus not a good idea at lower levels) and that's why they are so vehemently against this change.

So far they say that these powers are not too strong even at these new obtainable levels so I genuinely have no idea what their argument is other than precedence; which is a weak argument for or against something.

I see I got down voted because people didn't read into that context but this is the internet so that's my fault.

Whoever said we don't need testers? Certainly not I. But you see, what companies do in the real world, is they swap out or change "testers", just to prevent bias from personal acquaintance and regularity.

Being experienced doesn't mean you have good ideas. Or that your math can favor one thing or another.

Tell that to the people who love to share they've been around since I1 or something.

  4. I have been defeated by cold, hard, objective facts and I will never mentally recover from being put on blast so hard.

Edit: I can't speak for the serum changes yet. I'm going to test a necro/time when I get the chance.

Um... no. Completely not the point. (And it's certainly not just "nukes," anyone focusing on that is missing the point even worse.)

Those powers are *appropriate for the levels they're received at and the enemies they face later in the game.*  They are OVERpowered for getting earlier. They are inappropriate for the earlier content.  This is - say, playing Harebrained's Battletech and being given Warhammers and Atlases (100 ton assault mechs with much greater range and punch, for those wondering) on the second mission while you're still facing 'mechs 1/3 their size.  Those would be appropriate *much* later with harder content.

What do you think the result of that being the norm would be? Do you think that'll help retain players? It's certainly not solving any issue with the game itself - while some individual power sets might benefit from a power-availability-level reshuffle, making *everything* available by 30 - just, no.

It's not the powers themselves. It's not nukes, it's not T9 armors, it's not top-tier buffs or debuffs, it's not controller pets, it's not MM top-tier upgrades being available. It's their *inappropriateness* for the content that they'd now be available to play through, content that's not *designed* for that level of power.

I'll ignore the emotional tirade and rudeness.

Can you define 'inappropriateness'? Also, would you want the +5 levels of powers from being exemplified removed because they would also fall under this definition? How about incarnate powers on regular level 50 content?

    How about temporary powers?

Also these moves will scale to the appropriate level anyway. Headsplitter will do damage as if cast by the appropriate level. But you know this already so I'm sorry but your argument is.... to be generous, vague to me.

Respectfully, and i do mean it, I just don't understand the argument against this change other than what I thought the underlying issue might be in an earlier post. If it's not the bursty nature of nukes changing how mobs are tackled, what is going to fundamentally change?

  6. I'm going to argue that energy blast is great for poison since poison desperately needs some mitigation- especially since you need to be in melee for your fart cloud.

Now I know what you're thinking! The knockback is bad with the fart cloud. Well yes but thats why we have KB2KD slotted in our aoe's. Now you can keep enemies around you. For single target attacks, you could slot KB2KD but I find it unnecessary.

Or we could trash what we like, Brutes for instance, in the hopes that will make the game more enjoyable for the world at large.

This has nothing to do with the cottage rule but a great example of how people use it:

An excuse to change nothing because change is always bad. Brute changes wouldn't have happened if they obeyed the never-wrong-no-counter-argument cottage rule, right?

Well according to the cottage rule, brutes are the way they are now and we shouldn't change them or else they would no longer function like a cottage... or whatever. Sentinels should be deleted and all the MM changes with overwhelmingly positive feedback shouldn't happen either because they change the way the MM functions in a vague way.

I hope others see how silly and nonsensical invoking this mythical 'rule' is. Cottage rule isn't a rule. Let it die.

Disagree there.  It absolutely was, and was used for years by forumgoers during Live to try and swerve threads away from power changes.  It was a poor analogy from a senior systems designer who worked directly on the game's powers and mechanics, so let's not undersell the weight that held.

That said, see above post about robotics and fire in agreement with the sentiment of MMs needing more looking at.

It was used by forumgoers, not actual developers so I'm not putting any weight into it. It was a poor analogy for a reason and it is continuously being used as some sort of Holy grail to shut down any attempt at change (for better or worse).

It's not an argument. It's a philosophical stance- and an extremely weak one- 'let's cling on to what exists now because we have no proof something new could be better'.

The cottage rule isn't a rule and it should be dropped from our discussions on... anything.

  9. I'm glad to see the devs are willing to rock the boat at all. I was fearful... of... something I dunno how to describe it but seeing them make larger changes to MM pets and the level-thing makes me happy.

Some changes I agree with. Some I do not. But the fact there are changes at all and so bold is refreshing and I'm thankful there are people willing to dedicate their free tike to attempt to make the game better.

Enough kissing ass though, MM's still have issues that I'm not sure these changes will address. We'll see.

I'm looking forward to spaming arrows on a ninja/trick arrow MM to crank the crit rate up and watch ninjas push their single target dps to new highs.

Edit p.s. the cottage rule wasn't even a rule. It was a single post used as an analogy by an older dev. It's not an argument against change and never was one.

If Fulcrum Shift and Blaster/Corr/Def Nukes weren't so OP this wouldn't be an issue at all.

I actually think you're hitting the nail on the head with the argument.

For the sake of brevity, that's what this 'is this powercreep' thing is all about- the few strong powers that warp the game are now obtained earlier.

Nobody is crying that crab spiders are getting their spiderlings faster or that a tanker is getting Headsplitter sooner.

It's all about blaster nukes and the other handful of abilities that are strong.

Maybe this says more about how busted nukes are in this game than these powers being available earlier and that should be the REAL discussion.

  11. It's not terrible. People don't like it not having a hard single target attack and it's secondary effect is nigh useless. The voltaic sentinel is actually useful for action economy with /dark. This is because /dark demands a lot of attention and volty can attack while you are slowly casting your /dark powers.

It's not a great powerset but it's totally usable.

  12. I agree with Troo here. I dislike the -res component primarily because it doesn't address the elephant in the room:

    Cold domination is better.

The rest of the changes to the set are cool but -res doesn't feel appropriate and is just another dimension that is comparable to cold domination.

An absorb feels more interesting than a tacked on -res power.
