  1. I’ll vote Time/Sonic Defender.

Time has massive defense and recharge buffs that help any Brute regardless of power set. Has heals in case things go south. -Res from Sonic helps the Brute murd-I mean, arrest faster.

Claws? ...better than avg AoE, super fast animations/rech times (except Evis), nice diversity for sets, KD mitigation for solo, stackable ToHit, nice progression even at low lvl

Claws is always the answer. Go Claws OP.

Out of all the defense sets I have played regen seems to require the most management, as well as situational awareness. I have to constantly watch my health bar and be ready to hit a button if it gets low. That would be fine with me, if it offered some sort of benefit to make up for it. Compare regen to invulnerability which is set-and-forget and you would expect there to be some benefit for all the extra work it requires.

The only thing I can think of is that it has a self rez, that gives you invulnerability for like 15 seconds (IIRC) and you start with quite a bit of health and not stunned, which is cool. Which could be part of the design. You die a lot, but some back. But you still get penalized for dying. It might be cool, if using your self rez did not penalize you the way going to the hospital or being rezzed from another does.

Then you remember Willpower has the same exact rez and is one of the strongest defensive sets...

Regen just straight up sucks now. People can try to defend it in its current state all they want. "Yea, well I can do +4/x8 missions on mine so its not bad!! See?! Look!...guys?" But any other set could do the exact same thing with half the effort. Playing Regen nowadays is just hard mode (which I actually kind of see the appeal for).

One of my mains on live was a Spines/Regen Scrapper before the IH nerf... it's sad.

I’m going to be honest. Most of the time I solo, especially on a scrapper. I’d love to be able to do it all (jack of all trades type) who can solo AVs or do higher end group content. If I had to choose, I would go with the group content, though.

That said, what other options might you suggest? (I am keeping Spines/DA open, because it sounds cool.)

I know you’re anti-click mez, but you should seriously try out DM/SD. There’s a reason that combo has a 10 page thread dedicated to it on this forum. They compliment each other so well it’s like they were made for it. You’ll easily be able to solo AVs, and you’ll be a force to be reckoned with in high level group content.

If you’re wanting to stick to /DA though, my vote is Claws/DA. Great AoE and better single target than Spines. Low end costs help offset DA’s many toggles. Plus it’s thematically cool which is what really counts.

  5. I’ll echo a few other people here and say Claws is my favorite set.

The fact that you get Spin at lvl 6, one of the best PBAoEs in the game, makes leveling a blast. The sound effects are some of my favorites.

I have 6 lvl 50s and two of them are Claws (Claws/Bio Scrapper & Claws/DA Brute) which I think says a lot. The Claws/Bio in particular was the fastest character I’ve ever leveled as it was just too much fun.

Dark Melee is second for me simply due to badass-ness. Love the soul noir style. My “main” is DM/SD. Very excited for Shadow Maul changes.

Man, I dunno.  My buddy's SS/Inv brute is a monster and i haven't ever heard him complain about SS.  Double Rage is broken.

Dude double Rage is ridiculous. KO Blow feels like it one shots everything. Foot Stomp destroys. Mine is SS/Fire so Burn with that + Fiery Embrace is even more stupid damage.

The crash is an inconvenience. 100 percent. But the ten seconds of pathetic damage is worth the following couple minutes of carnage every time. Though I will admit I have faceplanted a couple of times when I was "Scrapperlocked" and the defense crash hit. It'll happen. But debt badges are a thing.

The issue is  I got spoiled by the taunt aura in shield so I am stuck with rad, shield. ea, inv and Will power now; for some reason  I got the taste of that sweet sweet taunt aura and it just makes other sets less appealing.

This is why I can’t stop making Bio and Shield Scrappers.

Well... That and the crazy +dmg...

A suggestion for you, @crkohl, swap out Sting of the Wasp for Gambler's Cut.  For Katana, it's the better power with a bit more damage/activation and lower recharge needed to get the best damage chain, GC - SD - GC - GD.  (It's also one of the differences between Katana and Broadsword.  Katana's faster T1+2 power, Gambler's Cut, is preferred.  Broadswords slower T1+2 power, Hack, is very much better than Slash.)

Thank you for the tip my friend. I’m actually aware of that, but tbh, I just like the animation of Sting of the Wasp way better. Animations > slightly better effectiveness for me most of the time. Gambler’s Cut looks odd to me for some reason.

I need to be in a eight yard range of a team mate though, which seems super circumstantial to be relying on. If others wish to do so I'd say go for it.

I'm going to say you're probably right regarding the Preventive proc. I feel True Grit is too valuable to slot 'empty'. I tried ignoring the resist side, for example, and aim for a full Preventive medicine chasing the recharge, but that was about 5% less resists across the board. Switching to the proc is 60HP less, which I'm going to say yes, the proc is worth the trade for. Full heal slotted it's only 275 as opposed to 204 with just the +5 heal

Actually Phalanx Fighting gives you 3.75% defense to all positions automatically WITHOUT any teammates. The teammates within eight yards only grows that number. Seriously it's basically a must take for how good it is.

I've given a stab at this build. I found myself unable to satisfactorily reach softcap to all (ranged is a PITA to get up much like S/L is on a Sentinel) and so just gave up and took the /Bio approach of getting the defenses to 40% and rely on Barrier's 5% to do the rest.

That said it has a nice frankenslotted Life Siphon returning 247 HP on each use (half of what Radiation Siphon does with the same slotting tbh, but no Contaminated mechanic required), all four attacks have two damage procs (Smite, Siphon Life, Shadow Maul and Midnight Grasp), and Dark Consumption is both in and slotted (for now as an endurance filler but always open to be frankenslotted for damage procs later if its recharge is cut down) up every 55 seconds. Soul drain is sadly not perma at only 36 seconds and neither is Hasten at 132 seconds.

Because we have Dark Consumption I took Assault as well, and took the 45% Musculature. If it proves to be too much Musculature 33% with endurance modification will be used.

I took Focused Accuracy since i sometimes do friendly arena duels but neither it nor Physical Perfection influence the build so they can be replaced by whatever is desired.

Tbh I think it turned out pretty well and elegant.

Glad you're joining the DM/SD gang, Sovera!

One thing right away is that you should definitely be taking Phalanx Fighting. It's a flat 3.75% defense to your Melee, Ranged, and AoE. And it grows for each teammate you're near. Perfect LotG mule too. I'd also try to fit the Absorb proc from Preventive Medicine in True Grit. The proc is probably better than the 4 set bonus from Titanium Coating.

  13. Felt inspired by the Shadow Maul changes to tweak my build a bit. Here it is:

Pretty happy with how this edit turned out. Over softcap on Melee, Ranged, and AoE defense. Solid resists to everything but Psi and Toxic. 5 seconds off of perma Soul Drain, 12 or so seconds off perma-Hasten.

I would be picking Shadow Maul as soon as its available with the update, so please ignore the level selection of it. I was feeling lazy so didn't redo the level order. It was pretty easy to pick it up as I previously had the not-so-spectacular One with the Shield.

  14. There is literally no reason to use a Scrapper to farm when Brutes exist. Blazing Aura and Burn will make mobs run away from you which is the last thing you want when farming.

  15. My experience with KM is on Stalkers not Scrappers, but optimal attack chains do not have Concentrated Strike. The animation is waaaay too long. The chance for recharging Power Siphon/Build Up is not worth it.

I wish it could crit like a normal attack as then it might be worth it for a Stalker out of Hide. Maybe.

  16. Yea... I think you ran in to some people who don’t know the game very well.

Dark Melee, while not an AoE powerhouse (which is king in CoH to be honest), is a very solid set, and one of the best single target AV killers out there. I sing its praises often on this board, but my main is a DM/SD Scrapper and he is an absolute beast.

Dark Armor is a ridiculously strong set, though I prefer it on Brutes (I don’t play Tanks, but them too). I’ve got a Katana/DA Brute at 50. You have very high resists even to Toxic and Psi, built in stealth and defense, and the best heal in the entire game. The end problems are real, but they are easily handled with IOs.

So yea, ignore those people and keep doing you.

I would be very excited if they left DC the same and made ToF a PBAoE fear that also does decent damage.

My thoughts exactly. Or even a targeted melee AoE (does that even exist in game now that I think about it?) around the target. Would make the pairing with Dark Armor more worthwhile to give Cloak of Fear an actual decent use.

edit: Thought about it, Thunderstrike is like that. So similar to that.

Bummer, looks like my original build is going to be superior then. Hopefully they do reconsider more reworks for Dark Melee in the future. The change to Shadow Maul is nice, but not enough. Still think Dark/Shield/Blaze is one of the best builds for a Dark Melee character 😛

I’m hoping they didn’t ‘scrap’ (lol) the changes because of the community’s input. I really think they were on to something when they tried to reimagine Dark Consumption.

Really unfortunate they’re getting rid of the change already. Honestly I’d like for them to change Touch of Fear as well. I know it’s unique to DM, but I don’t think I’ve seen a single person take it.

Dm/Ice, DM/Fire, DM/Radiation, DM/Dark and DM/Shield are all great combos. I would recommend any of those. You won’t be disappointed! DM/Anything is pretty good!

Oh don’t get me wrong I have plenty of experience with DM! My main on live was DM/Invuln, and my main on HC is DM/Shield. Got a DM/DA Brute I may revive as well with these changes.

Edit: Thinking a DM/Fire Brute may be in my future as well...that sounds super fun.

I'm putting Dark Consumption back on my DM/Ice Armor scrapper!  Energy Absorption will keep my End topped up so I can use DC for the attack!

That sounds like a very fun combo. Was going to roll a new DM Scrapper once the changes go live. Might do DM/Ice now.

Well, looking at the list of power sets at level 50 how about Battle Axe/Ice Armor?  They're the two rarest sets although it does seem like they may work adequately.  I have to admit to a lack of experience with them, I've never played Battle Axe and the only Ice Armor I played was a Tanker.

I’m not even exaggerating when I say I don’t think I’ve seen one Battle Axe Scrapper. And I’ve been playing on HC since last May. I was actually considering rolling one myself for that reason, but the set is seriously just “War Mace, but worse!” So that might be what you want, OP.

I have a couple of /Ice Scrappers, and it’s funny to me how rare they are because they’re unique. They’re the only AT with Icicles and Icy Bastion. But they take awhile to get going. Leveling one can be brutal.

Energy Aura is another secondary I don’t see as often. Very similar to /Ice.
