Crab backpack on Bane Spider alt build

I have a Crab that I've been leveling and very happy with.  I wanted to experiment with something different, so I used the alternate build mechanism to make a Bane version of the toon, which worked as expected for power selection.  I could also go into the costume creator and make a different costume that I'd mentally assign to my Bane build.  That costume did not have the crab backpack.

 

After saving the costume, though, my back choice is overridden and replaced by the crab backpack again.  So I have a Bane spider walking around with all those extra legs.  (When I'm in the secondary build for my Bane)  In my primary build as the Crab, everything is normally crab-like.

 

Is there a way that I can get my Bane version to not have the backpack?

 

I don't want to blow all of my respecs experimenting if anyone else has experience here already.  Does it matter which of the Bane vs Crab is the first build vs the second?

Reddit suggests that there's no way around this; that the variable forcing the backpack is a per-character one and not a per-build one.

I know I'm a bit late, but I want to confirm and elaborate on the previous answer.

 

Taking the Crab Spider set on any build will cause the backpack to stay on you, even if you switch to a build that does not build Crab.

Picking the Crab set seems to apply an invisible modifier on the player that forces it to appear on your back, which is pretty understandable since the Crab powers rely on the backpack.

This effect is applied no matter which slot you build Crab on.

 

If you no longer wish to wear the Crab Spider backpack, you will have to respec your Crab build and change it to Wolf/Bane.

I'm about 80% sure the in-game text on the respec screen when you first get the choice to go Bane/Crab literally warns you that this exact thing will occur.
