Build Advice SD/BS

Ok so, I know broadsword gets a lot of hate, but it seems to hit like a truck and has a fair number of AoE's, I am building this for thematic reasons, but no reason it can't perform well also.

Having trouble getting the defenses to incarna levels for ranged and AoE and my resists seem rather low, but, as it's a defense set maybe that's not an issue.

Would love some advice on slotting, I only have the i25 issue of mids, not sure if it's missing things or not but, here goes.

There is a lot more at a deeper level, but here are the highlights of what stand out to me:

  • Grant cover is a pretty important ability, as it comprises a good chunk of your defense debuff resistance. The ally defense buff is a happy bonus, and it's a useful lotg mule otherwise.
  • I don't know that Hack is worth using just for the achilles proc alone, so the extra slot could be used elsewhere if you aren't going to give it slotting attention. However, it's worth noting that BS is rather unique in that its tier 1 (hack) is actually a good attack, and worthy of real damage slotting.
  • You would be better served by a full gaussian's in Build Up to polish off your other positionals for incarnate content and give some pad for debuffs.
  • The Dam/KB in shield charge is a waste, especially given that it doesn't look like you specifically want it to knock back. Shield Charge does not need KB to KD enhancement otherwise, as its native behavior is KD.
  • Phalanx Fighting is not worthy of extra defense slotting, as the enhanceable value is almost nothing. These are prime slots to move to hack to make it a real attack.
  • Against all odds does not benefit from recharge, as it is an always on toggle. Just drop end redux in there.
  • Deflection is worthy of mixed slotting in order to maximize S/L resist. Its base value is the same as tough. Don't neglect its defense values of course, but play around with IOs or even HOs to get the best of both worlds.
  • The heal slots in physical perfection are largely wasted. You get better S/L resist return on throwing resist into deflection. The regen is negligible.
  • If you plan on using Parry, it would be worth slotting as a real attack. I would reconsider your overall slotting to perhaps incorporate more melee defense where possible (ie, 6th slot in oblit, unbreakable guard in tough) and dropping parry. Parry is a prime drop to pick up grant cover. If you research other Shield/ builds here on the Tanker forums, you will see many hitting incarnate softcapped defense (or very near) in all positions without heavy sacrifices elsewhere.
  • If you find yourself running short on slots pursuing these priorities, One with the Shield is a nice power and a great slot mule for the glad armor 3% IO. I would consider dropping conserve power for this. Between your slotted uniques and physical perfection, your recovery is already decent.

I may revisit this and provide a more in-depth reply, but I hope this helps!

Thanks for that I been playing around with it some and will try to incorporate what you've said there before posting another build. I've also been trying to stay away from the super expensive enhancements in this next build so it'll be more of a fresh 50 and I want to see where I can get it.

Again, thank you for replaying will adjust and then post new attempt.

EDIT: Why Gaussians in Build Up rather than Focused accuracy, wouldn't FA give it a better chance of proc?

EDIT 2: So this looks pretty crazy, like way way over def if anyone is near to me at all but... also seems pretty resistant to being debuffed too if it's already so high.

Kyora - Tanker (Shield Defense).mxd

EDIT 3: Remember to turn off Fly/Afterburner in mids before congratulating yourself on crazy numbers. Haha. Anyways with the team around me, it's incarna ok with above 58% Defenses for positionals. Otherwise is soft capped. END hungry but that's broadsword. Not sure how to fix that...

Copying below my take on Shield/BS. I understand you are going for a value build, which this definitely is not! That being said, it's not full of five winter sets or anything. The ATOs are real game changers for any build.

I see you focused on Force Feedback procs, which are of course nice. My build is still nicely offensive, but gets its recharge from other areas. I kept your power choices the same so as not to disrupt preference/theme there. I'm not a huge fan of focused accuracy myself, as it's an end hog, but it's useful for heavy tohit debuff scenarios. It's either that or CP on the way to Physical Perfection though, so either is fine, really.

To answer your buildup proc question - FA is simply not a good place for it. Even with full slots, buildup has only a little less than 80% proc chance. I can't think of a scenario where you would want gaussian's in FA. It is sometimes useful in tactics, as you get a proc chance for every teammate it affects, but FA has no such added odds.

Oh yeah I did that just to see the difference. Unfortunately have to copy your build by hand because we're using different versions of mids, it won't like me import from the click boo.

Side by Side, your build to mine, yours has better defenses to be sure, and stronger resists, but mine hits  harder.

Headsplitter for your build does 485 with a recharge of 5.05s

Headsplitter for mine (Yes I made Against all odds equal numbers) does 520.3 with a recharge of 3.83s

The only one which hits harder in yours is whirling sword but all of the recharges are slower, which, no doubt will help for your builds end consumption as mine will burn through it faster especially as it has perma hasten with sudden impact procs.

I'll definitely keep your build saved for when I can afford all those expensive sets for sure! Will be much better when I start pushing incarna content as the positionals are quite a bit better than mine by 5-9% and the resists are better across the board, except for psionics

Very interesting build though and thank you. Gives me some ideas for when I get there since I am levelling slowly and not rushing to 50

If you drop me your global I might drop an inbox treat for build-enabling. 😄

Sorry about the mids version - I guess I need to go in and run a new beta update, perhaps? I'm on an issue 27 version.

Also worth noting is that I put the fury -res proc in headsplitter. You could easily swap that for a damage proc if you prefer, but the -res will be a better overall dps return. Headsplitter is a more optimal power for this than whirling, as the proc math on the smaller aoe and longer recharge works in your favor. Switching it to a damage proc would bring headsplitter in this built a bit ahead of 520 damage.

The same holds true of the Achilles in Disembowel. I don't typically recommend putting the -res procs in 360 pbaoes or large aoes in general unless there is no other outlet, as the sorts of things that survive long enough for -res to matter are going to require your single target chain.

My build has 10% higher recharge not accounting for force feedback. Force feedback is definitely great, and I'm usually onboard with loading it up in sets that will support it, but in this case it does cause you to miss out on some very powerful IO bonus opportunities, particularly defensive bonuses.

One way or another I'm sure you'll crush all opposition on the way to 50! I should give BS a concept run for a new tank myself - I really love the idea of an actually strong tier 1 attack.

I appreciate all the advice, and when I can afford it will definitely try your build out since it is better overall even if less damage, at that point the tanker damage isn't going to matter compared to the team.

But it's a lot of expensive sets, and I am only level 15 on the char 🙂

So I got this to 50, got it fully kitted out, and it feels pretty unkillable, which is wholly Shield Defense's thing since I didn't take parry and this thing eats END like no tomorrow. All you need is blues in your tray. The lethal resists is kind of annoying since stuff hits only about half as hard as it should in most situation. Positioning is definitely a thing, hover helps here a lot so to the cones.

Took it into an AE S/L farm and it did fine, just end issues, not the fastest of killing but definitely wasn't going to die even if I went fully afk for... ever.

It's a pity because I love the way the character looks, and sword and board is just thematic but I dunno.

Also, thanks Sandwich for the assist in getting it built in game and out.

EDIT:

So I took some time to get musculature core Tier 3 for the level boost, and got the resist debuff interface, and it's made a HUGE difference, so did the end changes from this latest patch. I never run out of end now, the level shift made +4/x8 in AE S/L farm much easier. It's not going to be a speed farmer like a good spines/fire brute, but I'm clearing the top rated S/L farm in about 10 minutes a level now which honestly isn't bad getting just over 25 million inf an hour not counting drops.

Is it the best? Nope. But it's fun and a lot stronger than I thought it was gonna be after my initial 50 before Alpha slot rank 3.

Did you end up going with Sandwiches build?  I have a low level one of these and was interest if it could work as yes I really like the theme.  Glad to you had success.
