Guides of... Conventional Wisdom ?

Recommended Posts

Hail all:

New player to CoH Homecoming and MMORPG in general.

However a player with a 'slight bit' of OCD 🙂 - I love the detail in the Guides / Wiki and I am the type of player who reads them all. I appreciate the hard work involved putting them together. If you take the time to use them they save you aggravation and INF even if you are not a min max player.

Question : Is there a guide on "conventional wisdom" tips for longer term play ?

I understand there will be opinions that differ but it would be nice to have a conventional wisdom guide ? ! ?

ie. It seems universal that you do not create IOEnhancements till post level 20 due to scale.

- I didn't happen to note this in a guide - I think I picked it up of a YouTube video although I could be mistaken

ie. Save your Merit Points - don't spend frivolously -  until higher levels to be able to purchase high recipes / salvage / rare items to craft your best hero.

- Again I think I read that or inferred that from a help thread - a player running around with no enhancements try to save every last penny but struggling. I guess there is a balance.

Anyway if there is a "Conventional Wisdom"  Thread / Guide or some such thing and I missed it - please point me the direction.

First things that spring to mind are these:

The various mechanics sections in the HCWiki are very useful primers, and you've already covered some of the other bits (yes, save your merits and convert them all into inf by exchanging them for Enhancement Convertors or Enhancement Boosters + selling those in the AH. Don't slot Common IOs before Lv25, but Procs and Globals are fair game. Orange salvage and Prismatic Aethers sell decently on the AH, etc...)

And also... Ask! The community is still pretty friendly and welcoming even if it constantly argues with itself about minute performance differences whilst posting memes everywhere... 😉

My advice is to try different things.  Try different ATs, different powers, different pools, different slotting choice, different strategies, different content.

Eventually, each of will land somewhere and think what we are doing (with respect to whatever) is "optimal"... but no matter whatever, that assessment, even if correct, is only true for the limited scope of yardsticks we have to apply.

Even a question as simple as this has different possible answers, depending on many variables:

Many players shoot through levels 1-20 so quickly such that the question might not even be relevant to them! There is a sort of "correct answer" with respect to relative enhancement values between slotting choices, but the 'best answer' might be informed by less abstract and more specific (to the character, to the player account) details.

SOs are more powerful than Invention IOs in terms of pure enhancement power until you hit something like 30, but set bonuses and special IOs are totally worth it earlier if you can afford it.  Not to toot my own horn, but you might want to check this guide out to figure out what and when:

Just going to add that whether it is worth slotting enhancements from 1-22 depends heavily on how you are getting from 1-22.

If you are doing it old-school, soloing, doing the original story arcs, (which tend to be slower than the new ones) maybe even forgoing the XP multipliers?  Yes, you want to enhance your powers.

If you're running DFB repeatedly?  Probably shouldn't bother with much enhancement.
