Question - Are multiple entries for the same SG allowed?  Looks like there are people from within the same SG entering different bases of theirs related to their SG.

Yes, multiple entries from the same Supergroup are allowed - there’s no rule against that.

    However
, individual builders can only be part of ONE entry. If a builder contributes to multiple bases, they must choose one to be officially listed on. This means a person cannot be credited on more than one entry, even if they belong to the same SG.

I see the post you are referring to and have reached out to those involved for clarification on how they want to proceed.

  2. Yes, both Dacy and I and the HC Council gave this a lot of thought, as it was a major concern before implementing the Novice category. Ultimately, three key factors led to our decision:

    1. Honor System Disclaimer:
The contest announcement includes a clear statement:

"We are relying on the honor system to ensure fair competition. The Novice tier is meant for casual builders and those still honing their craft- not experienced builders seeking an easy win. Violating this may result in disqualification and a ban from future contests."
We want the event to be fun and fair for everyone. Enter with integrity and respect for fellow builders.

    2. Title Transparency:
Winners will be labeled as “Novice Champion.” For a true novice, this is something to be proud of. For a skilled builder trying to game the system, it’s less appealing.

    3. Community Awareness:
We know our community well. If someone’s competed before, we’ll likely recognize them. If they haven’t, chances are they are genuinely new.

Lastly, while we’re not actively investigating every entry upfront, we reserve the right to review standout bases and ensure the category’s integrity is upheld.

I would absolutely love to be able to recognize and honor the great builders in our SG, however we prefer to keep the base access private.  Admitting judges is fine, but posting our base passcode openly on the forums where anyone could use it until the event is over and we can change it is out of the question.  Will you accept private submissions rather than public postings?

Thank you for your message. We truly appreciate your interest in participating and completely understand the desire to maintain some privacy around your base.

That said, in the interest of fairness and transparency, all contest entries must be made publicly accessible during the judging period, which runs from May 4th to May 18th. We feel it’s important that any base being considered for recognition can be viewed not only by our judges, but also by the wider community. This helps ensure that our selection process is open, consistent, and aboveboard.

If your base is selected as a winner, we’d also ask that it remain accessible for a few weeks after the contest concludes, so others can visit and appreciate your work. After that window, we’d still love the option to show the winning base to interested parties upon request, but ongoing public access would not be required.

If you're concerned about your usual passcode being exposed, one suggestion is to change it to a temporary code just for the contest period. That way, your usual access remains protected while still allowing the community to enjoy your creation.

We completely understand if these terms don’t align with your preferences. If keeping your base private is a top priority, then this particular contest might not be the best fit. That said, we’d truly love to see your work and share it with the community, even if only for a limited time.

Please let us know how you’d like to proceed.

  4. @DarionLeonidas

Our intention wasn't to actively police the novice category, as we trust players to assess their own skill level. Since your base was recognized in a player-sponsored contest rather than an HC-sponsored one, I believe you should be fine entering as a novice. We just ask that you honestly evaluate your experience and honor the spirit of the category. If you've done that, then we should be good to go 🙂 Thanks for entering, and best of luck to you!

  5. Not sure I’d consider myself a Power That Is but, yeah, can add these to our FAQs. Good call!

The maximum item count for any base is 20k items.

Easiest way to determine that is typing /editbase 3 while in the base. There will be a window that will provide the total item count.

The longer way of doing this is heading into your Entrance Room and selecting Upgrade Plot.

  6. Couple things:

    - Love that you were inspired to get back in the editor! Was it visiting the competitors that inspired you?
    - The "dark cast" you've described outside/above/below is your Lighting Type. The default Lighting Type is Indoor and is the most dynamic. But only applies to the lighting inside the original base walls, thus "indoor". With Indoor lighting you can have vibrant colors in each of your base rooms.
But this lighting does not extend outside the base. That's where the other Lighting Types (which can be changed in Options in the editor) come into play. The outdoor lighting will basically cast a giant spotlight over your entire base map, so that the areas above and below won't be dark. The major drawback to this is that it washes out your indoor lighting - no dynamic color settings or mood lighting with Outdoor Lighting on.
    - Lastly, the homogenizing of colors that you explained, I think this is your Room Lighting within your base. Some items in the editor pick up on the room lighting colors significantly more than other items. The Room Lighting can be found on the Lighting Tab of the Room Window.
    It looks like this:

    Hope this helps!

  7. I would say don't stress it too much. There is a corner piece to the roman awnings that helps, but - (and don't tell anyone I said this...) not everything need be perfect 🙂 It's GREAT when you can make everything seamless, and Squidget has a significantly cleaner roof on display in their follow-up Garden base, but it's not necessary.

If you closely inspect the roof in The Pagoda -

You'll see that there are gaps, and changes in material, and the support beams don't even attach to the wall - and you know what? No one cares 😄 The base is still a beauty by anyone's standards. So, don't overthink it!

Attempting to keep discussion off the contest entry thread, but we did see your request here:

The category your base is entering under: Arcane or Other ( please advise )

Two judges have taken a look and felt that out of the two options Arcane made the most sense. That being said, it's your base, classify it how you feel best fits your intention. No wrong answers
     🙂

If the base is meant to be for private use, not for public events (AKA not a club, but someone's house for example) will that alter how things are scored?

No, the rubric does not favor event spaces over personal residences.
The only potential difference is in the Player Engagement category, as event spaces are generally designed to host players. However, as we've stated elsewhere, no base is expected to achieve a perfect score. This rubric is simply our attempt to capture the multitudes of ways that a base can be special.

If the functional items are hidden because they don't fit the theme/decor, will that count against us? For example, if I don't want a random NPC in the middle of my bedroom and so I hide the face maker in the closet, will that still be kosher for functionality? Will we need to list all of the hidden functional items on our entry if they are hidden?

Not at all! While we appreciate seeing services in a base, this time we aren't awarding points just for including them. In fact, we find it even more impressive when services are cleverly hidden or integrated into the design. If your base has hidden functional items, please let us know in advance so you get credit for the effort you put in to disguise them.

  10. Guess i'll use this post here to keep a running tally of the number of bases entered per category. Keep an eye here if that's of interest to you:

    Novice: 39
    Realism: 13

  12. Judging Rubric

Please note: This rubric is not a checklist for perfection, nor is there an expectation that every base should or could achieve a maximum score. Bases may excel in some areas while scoring lower in others, and that’s okay. Creativity and design are subjective, and this rubric is simply our best effort to recognize the many facets that contribute to a great base. Judging is conducted by a group of passionate but imperfect humans, and while we strive for fairness, no system is without flaws. Our goal is to celebrate the art of base building and provide a structured way to appreciate the effort and skill involved.

  13. Hey everyone! It’s Dacy and your friendly base-hopping Easter Bunny, back again to announce that the HC Base Building Contest is making its grand return for 2025!

The creativity and craftsmanship in past contests have been incredible, and we can’t wait to see what you bring this time! This contest is open to all players, but it is highly competitive - our judging rubric is designed to recognize outstanding artistic, architectural, and technical skill.

This year, we're also introducing a Novice category for new and casual builders who are still developing their skills. Whether you’re an experienced builder aiming for the grand prize or just getting started with base building, there’s a place for you in this contest!

    Contest Details

No theme, alignment, or shard restrictions – all bases are welcome! (See Fine Print for eligibility details.)

    Competition Categories:

    • Fantasy / Arcane – Magical, mythical, and otherworldly builds.

    • Realism – Bases that could exist in the real world, whether modern, ancient, or in between

    • Nature – Forests, caves, gardens, and other nature-inspired environments.

    • Tech / Sci-Fi – Futuristic, cyberpunk, and high-tech bases.

    • Novice – For new and casual builders still developing their skills!

    • Freeform – If it doesn’t fit the above, it belongs here!

    🏆 Prizes & Titles: 🏆

Winners will receive 750 Prismatic Aethers (split among contributors if multiple), along with the prestigious golden title:

    "2025 Base Building [Category] Champion"
(e.g., 2025 Base Building Fantasy Champion, 2025 Base Building Novice Champion, etc.)

Up to five participants per winning entry will receive the title, including both builders and owners (as long as they are not entering another base themselves).

🏷️ Winners will also have the option to add their winning base’s passcode to their title if they choose!

Submission Deadline: Sunday, May 4th, 2025, at 6 PM Eastern (11 PM UTC)

    How to Enter

The base owner (the character with the red star in the member list) must submit the entry in this thread with:

    • Your character name: (Red Star Holder)

    • Your Global handle:

    • Are you the owner?

    • Are you the builder?

    • Your base’s name:

    • The shard it is located on:

    • The passcode for entry:

    • The category your base is entering under:

    • Contributing builders’ names or Global handles: (Up to 5, including yourself. Don’t forget to credit your builder if different from the owner!)

🚨 Only one base submission per person! No entering under multiple accounts.

    Judging Process

This year’s panel of judges includes Easter Bunny alongside some of our 2023 contest winners: BBBadger, Deep Six, Garbage Wizard, Gem, and Interrabang.

    🔍 Judging Details:

    • Bases will be evaluated using our official rubric to ensure a fair and thorough review. (Rubric attached below!)

    • Only the top-scoring bases will be toured during the final round of judging.

    • No private tours will be taken beforehand, so if your base has hidden areas or special details, include extra information in your submission post!

    The Fine Print

    • Judges are not eligible to enter the contest they judge. Bases they worked on are ineligible.

    • Builders who contribute to multiple bases must choose ONE to enter. You can only win with a single entry.

    • Bases that won or placed in the 2020 or 2023 HC Base Contests are ineligible, but their builders may enter with new bases.

    • Golden titles can be awarded to any character on the same account, not just one tied to the winning base.

    • First-time winners receive the “2025 Base Building Champion” title.

    • Returning champions receive the “Base Building Grand Champion” title. (Grand Champions may enter again but will only receive Prismatic Aethers, not additional titles.)

    • Base owners who did not build their entry are permitted to enter but must credit their builder. If their base wins, their title will be "2025 [Category] Champion Base Owner."

    Novice Category Eligibility:

    • This category is for new and casual builders still developing their skills.

    • If you've been a finalist or winner in any contest, you do not belong in this category.

    • If you're unsure if this is the right fit, we're happy to advise!

    • Depending on interest and turnout, we may expand Novice into a full contest in the future!

    Disclaimers

⚠️ This is a competitive event designed to highlight bases that push the limits of the base editor. While we appreciate every submission, not everyone will win. If you find it difficult to enjoy an event where your work may not place, this might not be the best fit. However, we encourage everyone to participate in the spirit of creativity, camaraderie, and appreciation for our community’s amazing talent!

⚠️ We are relying on the honor system to ensure fair competition. The Novice tier is meant for casual builders and those still honing their craft - not for experienced builders seeking an easy win. Violating this may result in disqualification and a ban from future contests.

We want this event to be an enjoyable and fair competition for all participants. Please enter with integrity and respect for your fellow builders!

💡 The future of this contest depends on community interest and participation. If you’ve ever wanted to join, now is the perfect time to hop in and show your support!

We’re beyond excited to see what you all create this year! Whether you’re crafting a mystical fortress, a high-tech lab, a serene nature retreat, or something completely unique, bring your best work and let’s celebrate the incredible base-building talent in our community!

    Happy Building!

  14. I wouldn’t say there’s anything wrong with your base. Just like with art, base building is subjective, and you’ve created something that reflects your vision - so it can’t be “wrong.” The fact that you haven’t won a base contest doesn’t necessarily mean your craftsmanship is lacking; rather, it speaks to the incredibly high level of skill and competition within this community.

That being said, there’s always room for growth for all of us. One thing I really admire about your base is the interior of your Savings & Loan - the curved walls are a fantastic touch! If you’re looking to refine your build even further, one immediate area to consider is flickering textures. Cleaning up those spots can make a big difference in the overall polish of your base.

If you haven’t already, you might find the City of Base Building Discord helpful. There’s a perma invite link in my signature, and it’s a great resource for builders of all experience levels. You’ll find plenty of tips and tricks, including ways to mitigate flicker, as well as a supportive community to exchange feedback and ideas with.

  15. Adding a Chapter for Dacy's Guide to Tintable Objects Google Doc :

    -
Guide to Tintable Objects Link -

You'll find every object that can take tintable color anywhere, listed, even if the object does not note that it's tintable (and there were a LOT of objects that did not note it).

Limitations, such as a small tintable area, a dark base color that limits the amount of tint that shows, or other limitations are noted, along with a column that notes some possible known uses, other than the obvious use for which the item was created.

Check it out! We hope it's helpful
