  1. Another tweak I made (and this trick is good for anyone dual-booting between Windows and Linux):

I already had a working install of the Homecoming Launcher in Windows partition, so I replaced several folders (accounts, architect, costumes, data, logs, powercust, screenshots) in my Linux install by symlinks pointing to the corresponding folders in my Windows install. Now I have access to all my custom files (costumes, popmenus) no matter where I play.

  2. I successfully installed City of Heroes on Linux Mint 20.1 "Ulyssa" (Cinnamon desktop), but it's not for the faint of heart...

    1. I did the whole update and upgrade after the initial instal, then installed the NVidia drivers (460.39). After rebooting, I got an warning popup stating that "your system is currently running without video hardware acceleration". After much googling, the fix I found was to remove a conflicting xorg driver (sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-fbdev), which solved that issue.
    2. Linux Mint sees the Wine packages as "wine-stable" and not "winehq-stable". *beats forehead against wall*

But I think it was worth it.

Is there an issue with characters who had the Monitor Duty/Rapid Response badges before the update not getting the teleporter powers associated with them?

I've checked a couple characters that had the Monitor Duty badge already and they have no Monitor Duty teleporter even after some post-update hours logged by a base portal.

Whereas a newer character that just got the badge today, post-update, did get the Monitor Duty teleporter power with it right away.

Bumping this because I have a similar issue:

This character (Beatriz da Fontaine, on Everlasting) had the Rapid Response Member Accolade before I27, but does not have the Rapid Response Portal in her power list (the option is accordingly greyed out in Fast Travel). Do I have to "earn charges" by logging out near a SG portal to make the Accolade power appear ?

  4. From when I was dabbling a lot more with Linux... Gentoo is NOT for casual Linux users. In my book, the only distro harder to install is http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/.

I tried to do the steps with a 32-bit version of Linux Mint (19.3 Trina), except the nvidia drivers the distro uses only go up to version 390. I could install the drivers from the nvidia website, but since I wanted to test to see if someone with limited computer knowledge could install this on a "potato", I stopped there.

To make sure I did not have a "dud" for a video card (it's a low-cost one, but works OK on my regular Windows 10 set up), I did a separate install of Ubuntu 20.04 64 bit. It had nvidia drivers version 450 right out of the "box", so it works there.

  5. Tequila and the HC launcher are two self-contained, independent programs.

Removing Tequila will not break anything (I did it once to switch to Island Rum for Windows before switching back), you just won't be able to use it to launch the game - which is okay if you're satisfied with the new HC launcher.

Furthermore they used two completely different set of folders, if you install the HC launcher you end up with a 2nd install altogether.

If you alternate between the twos you might need to manually sync all the "player created" files  like the costumes, the logs and the AE missions.

tldr; stick with the HC launcher if it works for you, you can ditch Tequila and the old install later.

  6. A sub-forum for bios.... sure, why not?

But, not to take anything from Hyper's suggestion (Hey, Hyper! Long time no see!), @Mimiru is hosting a RP wiki (alongside her "Unofficial Homecoming Wiki") at https://fbsa.cityofheroes.dev, for those who might want something more elaborate (and time-consuming) than plain ol' text-only bios.

    image.png.4437d2faa4f3330c3ccffa3a8a655a14.png

I know, wiki editing is an acquired taste, and not for the faint of heart...

  7. Fooled around setting up the HC Launcher in Linux on a VM (VirtualBox 6.1). I used a 32 bit Linux distribution (in case some currently XP users would want to try on an older machine): Linux Mint 19.3 "Tricia" with Xfce desktop

It works as intended. The game itself... might be slow as molasses depending on the host machine (I run a fairly decent desktop and it was kinda slow even after I upped the default settings in VirtualBox).

Unfortunately Island Rum for Windows doesn't seem to have a convenient registry key that can be used to find out where it's installed. On Mac it's always installed in the same place under the wine root, but on Windows it could be anywhere. 😕

Thank you for the answer.  Oh well.
Deleted the previous install of the new Launcher.
Switched to Tequila for this test, it installed and asked me if I wanted to move files.
It did move *most* of them - but that's on me: I have so many costumes, AE files, etc. that I keep "_storage" sub-folders for those I don't use normally. Those I moved myself.

Moved the "screenshots" folder as was mentioned earlier in the thread.

The relocation of bind load files from data/ to settings/live/ might take a while to get used to. Thankfully, just putting something like "/bind_load_file nomelee.txt" still work.

Oddly I could not find the "PlayerCreatedSouvenirClues.txt" file anywhere. I could copy it back, but I'm unsure where to put it.

  9. Installed and run successfully.

    * Avast ran several scans, 1 on install, 1 when I clicked "Accept", 1 when after that, until it offered to whitelist the game.

    * Since I use Island Rum for Windows (for reasons) I did not get the prompt to transfer files from my existing install over the the new one. Joy.

What would useful is a simple "What goes where" guide between the old install directory format and the new install directory format, for those of us who will have to move things manually (I can guess most of it from the deep dive post).

The wiki currently implies it is open to everybody on all Homecoming servers, not just roleplayers. Is that intentional?

Would probably be a good thing, not sure whether Ouroboros Portal will be around for much longer.

I'm not in charge (just a loudmouth...), but I would have no objection to that.

As for official Dev support, @Cipher was the one who posted https://forums.homecomingservers.com/topic/15710-online-character-build-browser/

If the sort of features that would allow Cipher's project to double as a roleplay hub could be implemented, then I also think that would be ideal.

What do you say, Cipher?  Would adding some image uploaded and wiki-style user-content submission systems be within the scope of your current project?   How might the community assist you in deploying those sorts of features?

Personally, I would keep these two projects separate: one is like City of Data, the other is like Virtueverse

Especially if the "online character build browser" is not wiki-based (the most efficient and easiest to maintain way to have a "wiki-style user-content submission system" is, well, to install a wiki).

Hello! I'm Mimiru, you may recognize me from such projects as "The Unofficial HCWiki", and.. well that's likely all you recognize me from currently 😛  I decided I could throw another project up for Homecoming: The FBSA Wiki, it is VERY much a BRAND new install of MediaWiki and I've not had a chance to customize anything, but it's a thing https://fbsa.cityofheroes.dev/ Keep in mind I will be doing A LOT of work on this in the near future.

Well, that's a start!  All it needs is a fresh coat of paint (main page's log and design), some furnitures (categories and templates) and it would be ready for business!

I have some import files of templates and categories that I took from Virtueverse (don't need to be admin to do that: Main Page --> Special Pages --> Export Pages), I could PM them to you.

Though everlasting is the unofficial RP shard, rp of various degrees still happen in other shards, I would rather the name is not tied to a shard, or to coh in general (because of other private servers), but to HC

I concur; I wouldn't want a RPWiki (ok, that's my working title at the moment) to be exclusively for Everlasting.

What about getting dev support here and having it right here on homecoming?   Wasn't there supposed to be an automatic tool getting worked on for exporting character data anyway?   Why not just have them expand a little on the scope and bundle both together.

I would be great to get dev support! The ideal set up would be to have the site on homecomingservers.com

... except I'm not a "big name" around here, instantly recognizable, nor was I on Live. They don't know me and I don't know any of them.
If you do, feel free to point them to this thread.

I will also cross-post this on the Homecoming Discord and the City of Roleplay Discord, to get more comments.

Unfortunately, not to my knowledge, no.

I'm sorely tempted to use the domain I have hosted with GoDaddy (which is mostly dormant) to set up something...

Started another thread on that particular subject:

  15. Following up on comments from this thread:

    1) Would there be any interest in a wiki-based site similar to Virtueverse (http://virtueverse.net) but starting fresh for Homecoming characters ?

I have dabbled with mediawiki installs and administration in the past (mostly as test sites before putting stuff up on Virtueverse), and I have a mostly dormant name (danmay.org) that could be used with the proper subdomain. I would not be adverse to recruiting other admins either.

    2) If 1 is a go... what would be a good subdomain for it?  "Homecomingverse" is a bit of a mouthful. "RPWiki"?

This is just me testing the waters, nothing has been initiated so far. Your comments will be more than welcome.

I thought virtueverse had the standard template.  But they're an exclusive club now with an invite-only setup apparently.

You can request an account from the Virtueverse Discord - yeah, I know... but still, not quite exclusive.

  18. No "standard form" per se, but from what I have seen a lot of people seem to like:

    general tl;dr disclaimer first, ex.

((no ERP or I will come to your house and do unspeakable things to you))

followed by a general description, usually in character

    'ello! I am a T'unting K-nig't wit' an hor-rible French ak-sent

then a list of things you should know about the character: abilities, visual cues, etc. Usually as a list

    ((

    * His father was an hamster and his mother smelt of elderberries

    * Likes wood carving

    ))
