  1. Halloween event typically starts the first Tuesday of October and ends the Tuesday after the end of the month. It finished as it usually does. Spent my last night trying a stab at ToTing redside. Found a semi decent spot and even managed to successfully do zombie and a banner run before I logged.

  2. Whew! That first weekend was certainly Ham-packed........everyone loves a Hami joke, right? So far this weekend we've knocked out Nemesis, Rikti, and Zombie invasions trying to gain entrance to our most closely guarded secrets at Portal Corp. We've repeatedly pestered Eochai for donations to our pumpkin pie bake off and asked Jack more than once to please put pants or a shirt on. Banners popping up like fire ant mounds have been squashed time and again.

Heck, someone was even kind enough to deliver a robotic cleaning service to the Motel. Sadly Mayhem Motel was vaporized in the cleaning process.

    Other thoughts.

    • We have zero control over when events pop. So you may have to wait around to get the thing that you need.
    • Please be patient. We have some folks helping out this year that are learning the ropes of league management as we go. It's not nearly as simple as it seems, so please be forgiving of the person with the star.
    • Also, not everyone is as familiar with doing the banners, zombies, Rikti, etc as we run them. We cannot guarantee that these events will always be played out in that regard.
    • Speaking of banners, more people that have Incan makes it any easier task. Ideally we'd like 5 people with Incan when banners pop up, but we can make it work with 4. You only need the 1st level and that is only 60 threads.
    • Speaking of invasions. Are we really teleporting all the time like that? Yes. Are we doing it on purpose? Yes. Are we doing it to irritate everyone? No. League TP within the invasion events just keeps aggro and spawn rates high, dragging out those invasions. Necessary evil. You can turn your prompt on if you wish to avoid it.
    • Also, when at the motel, if you have the window open that says "You cannot enter" it will prevent you from seeing the TP prompt window. If the parking lot gets real quiet, try to close it quickly to get the TP....or remove the prompt.
    • And just as a general hint, when you're on Monkey Island, thrown down an Ion Judgement or AOE attack to get some bonus monkeys towards your Zoo Keeper badge.

We hope everyone is having a good time. For me, this is my favorite event of the year and it's madness from start to finish. I get to make new friends, show people how awesome our shard is, and get people hooked on CoH. I have so much fun with everyone and I hope everyone else is having fun too. If you get bored on PLing in AE, head over to PI and join the league. I heard someone mention tonight they went 1-50 just today on ToTing. And as always, faithful viewers.....Mayhem Motel - We'll leave the fright on for ya!

Doc, I, and our Torchbearer crew are ready to hit it again this year. ToT league will be open for business come Tuesday, heaven help Mayhem Motel. I had to meet w/ the manager last year.....I'm still on a payment plan for damages, but I just can't help myself.

  4. Something wicked this way comes......The Eternal Night

Ghosts, goblins and witches that go bump in the night, we return to Mayhem Motel in search of a fright. Warwolves, vampyri, and zombies out in full view, may bring out new costumes and salvage for you. Banners and Rikti and Zombies, what fun, we'll continue the mayhem 'til the dawning of the sun.

It is that time of year again fellow denizens of Torchbearer. By next week we shall be engulfed in more or less a solid month of candy fueled chaos. This is usually the busiest time for our shard, gaining more and more interest in the ToT League with each passing year. We'll be back in the saddle, chasing down roving Jack in Irons and Eochai, as well as herding cats. As many of our players are back to working in office or even busy work at home positions, you will likely not see the same person in charge the majority of the time. With that in mind we ask the following:

    • Be participating - if you need to be AFK briefly, plz say so. Also, as a general FYI, the hospital is across the street from Mayhem Motel.
    • If you are AFK for prolonged periods, you will be kicked to make room for players present and actively playing
    • No dual/multiboxing if the league is full and others are waiting to join - currently the only exception I can think of is if there is a need for an additional 50 anchor. Which leads to my next point...
    • If you are a team lead that is logging or alting, please replace the team lead position with a 50
    • If you get the XP bug, please let either your team lead or league lead know. They will ask you to drop and then re-invite you. This continues to be a consistent issue, but more difficult to determine who is integrated into the league in a zone w/o a population cap.
    • The same as last year, we will not be running a Tip Team w/in the league. I like the idea of having a parallel team/league/what have you that folks can drop in and out of for tip missions but not something we have specifically planned out.
    • Be patient when asking for invites. We're not ignoring anyone but the league leader is managing nearly 50 people. Also, just be aware that team leaders may also invite to their teams w/in the league.
    • Also be aware that the league leader cannot move player positions w/in a team, so if a level 16 ends up with the star please don't get angry and hostile. Be mindful that this event tends to be the first time many players are exposed to such large scale team/league events and will quite frequently not understand what to do. If you want to help, please calmly provide clear and detailed explanations on how to remedy the problem.
    • Remember the Golden Rule - treat others as you would like to be treated
    • Lastly, please remember that this is entirely a player led event as we run it. If you cannot be civil and gracious, please do not participate with us. We try our best, we try to be fair, and we're here to have a good time. If we're not having fun, then we're done.

For some of our regulars, the plan will be to continue normal Hami raids as scheduled. For folks that decide you want to try out our Hami raids, welcome. We have a breakdown of our raids over on the Player-led calendar.

My last note for the time being, due to the currently demanding nature of my job and my own health issues, my role in this year's ToT event will be more limited than usual.  I ask that everyone show the same amazing support, Dad jokes, and honorary faceplants with whomever is in the hot seat at the time.

  6. Sort of randomly inputting my thoughts from comments I've seen.

I've tried to stream the game a few times, just for folks to watch and see. Alas it's not something I've been able to keep going, people get a little stalker-ish. I'd like to be able to but maybe I'm the old fart that feels weird trying to have a conversation with imaginary people on a 10 sec delay.

I personally like to run events. Most nights I'm on it's the Hami. ToTing in Oct., random invasion events, trials, TFs, and just plain running the content. I mean, back in the day Frostfire was THE boss to beat. The last couple days just running radio missions for temp powers and only now moving into Croatoa to get my Katie unlocked. I still don't know how to do half of what's in this game and I'm ok with that. I'll never be able to make my own builds.....makes my eyes go cross.

I have introduced a few friends to CoH who have never played before or even heard of it until they played. I encourage newer players to run the content, if nothing else, to understand game mechanics and how your powers work. Knowing how to play the game is likely to keep newer players in the long run.

I understand that the opportunity to play CoH is graciously granted. In exchange for being an absolute maniac all over Torchbearer, I get to play the game as it exists; something I didn't have the chance to do for a long time. New content is great, old content is great, I like who I play with and I have a good time. CoH was always awesome for the community. And if nothing else, I am definitely a part of my shards community.

For attention grabbers, I think having a dedicated space (social media ofc) where players are able to add game content. Saturday iTrials, nightly Hami raids, ToT league, random missions or TFs, or whatever else. Some place where content can be shared for others to see. Videos, screenshots, memes, what have you. A list of folks that stream the game. I think also making the player led event calendar needs to be more prominent. Most folks don't even know we have one. IDK if anyone does podcasts around MMOs, or older games, or just games to try or what have you. Depending on the kind of content people consume those might be ways to grab their attention. And, of course, the long standing issue for me is that CoH has to compete with Steam. Not that I have a massive library but Steam is an interconnected platform, gaming and socially. Heck even having the option to chat with your friends online when you aren't would be cool.

The whole point of the event is that it breaks the rules somewhat.  You want that 10X XP, gotta take an increased risk.  After it happens to you once or twice, you learn to compensate and keep your distance at first.  XP debt is shut off during the event, so it's really just a minor inconvenience anyway...

No! Not my debt! Say it wasn't so. You know how hard it is to fill all of those graves in Striga all by myself?

I think our server is pretty good.  Less peak population then excel but plenty of teams.  6 hami raids every day if you like and 3 extra on saturday.  MSR on friday after the hami raids.

I spent a few MSR on excel and i hated the general and lfg chat,  couldnt wait to get back to torch each time.  There is less chat but less 'excel?' Im not really sure how to describe it but you should know since you were there.

I might give you an ambrosia on accident at some point.  I think my game is broke,  it keeps doing that.

And participating in the Hami raids on Excel........well that's just torture. I started on Excel. It has the population to be sure, it has the noobs (which isn't bad but these are the kids who jumped over from BF or CSGO that diddled your Mom mentality), and generally I found everyone to be pettier, snarkier, and ruder in general.

For me, Torch is my home. This is where I feel the majority of "I played on Live" players are at, along with the can do CoH attitude. Torch is usually busier in the evenings has a decent portion of the population in EST and we catch a lot of EU at the end of their days. We try to run stuff after the Hami's but work gets in the way. People are jumping ship to go there and I think more will make their way over here eventually. We don't have time for attitude, it's serious business over here. Things like face plants, Dad jokes, and really cheesy advertising.

  9. @TheZag You can't say that you haven't run it by now.

I like to run this one for fun and to farm for the Volcanic badge for folks. Before you'd have to run it at least 4 times to get them all so I am more than happy with everyone being able to get the badge on one run.

Not sure if or when this alteration to the mob spawns changed but when I did a few runs on Monday we did eventually exhaust the spawns at some point. And then the last kill gave most folks that last one for the badge.

And yeah, I know, I'm terrible at reading patch notes. I like it to be a surprise, like the weather. But I LUV the mini map now being available. Did Zag tell ya? I told him to. 😁

  10. It is with relief that we bid farewell to this year's Halloween event. We kicked a lot of zombie butt, sent the Rikti packing, and kept PI safe from a roving Jack in Irons and Eochai as well as thwarting any foothold the Deadly Apocalypse tried to gain in our fair city.

We repeatedly ran off the occupants of Mayhem Motel; a poorly timed visit of the Witches, Werewolves, and Vampiric Association, who were in town as contracted cosplayers. I even met with the management of Mayhem Motel, but to no avail. I expect to be receiving a bill for damages and restitution from said manager.

I think I speak for all involved on our end, that we hope that everyone had fun, got the badges they wanted, the merits, threads, and costumes too. I think things ran a bit more smoothly this year and the additional assistance of volunteers with Incan helped immensely. Huge thanks to Dr. Feel-Good, Lord Aragas, Tiger, soo, Mara Blaze, troff, all associated alts, and many more. I know that there are others I am missing but we were grateful to have folks help out. Just know that running the ToT league is so much more like herding cats than anything else we have done in game to date.

As always you can find many of us in the Hive on a regular basis running/playing in the Hami raids. (See the Torchbearer player led events calendar for more information) We need more merits for our crushing altholism, and well, you know, the bill. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯  Until next year...

  11. As the Halloween event is wrapping up I have been noticing an issue with Incandescence working inconsistently. During both the Hami raids in the Hive as well as numerous times during our ToT league, Incandescence is frequently leaving members of the league behind. By and large most if not all of our players are congregated in the same area they are being pulled from, yet we may have as many as 10-12 left behind. Initially thinking certain lore pets to be involved but in many cases pets are not even out. During ToT league, there will be members left out because of the 'You cannot enter" prompt blocking the window for the TP prompt but again, not always. With as much as we have been using Incandescence this month, it has become a noticeable issue.

    Thanks

Good news then.  You don’t need to participate in them.  Personally, I think that Valentine’s Day is a crock.  So I just don’t participate in the Valentine’s Day event.  When the event is over, I dismiss all of the event tips, and go on with my day.

FWIW, I am unaware of any server that does not activate the holiday events.

App you can be my Valentine's Bestie cuz I avoid that stuff like the plaque. I decline the Valentine reality and substitute my own.

But I also recognize that is a valid point. The holiday's suck for those who are vulnerable and at risk. It is possible to be isolated even in a group game no matter how it is imposed. ToT is a big thing for our group, but that's about it. Anyone on Torch need to run someone to run content with, outside of Hami hours I'm 90% down for whatever. Esp Frostfire.

  13. So far so good as we move into the first full weekend of Trick or Treating. I'm honestly not sure what caused the heavier lag, the Rikti or the Zombie invasions. Regardless, we knocked them all back to their realms of existence. We hope everyone is having fun.

Some things to note in the coming weeks:

    • Quite frequently league members may experience an XP bug. If your XP bottoms out or seems low, drop league and ask for a re-invite. We are well aware of this from last year.
    • Please be patient when asking for invites. I diligently try to go back thru my chat to add folks in the order they asked. This can be tell, local, or broadcast.
    • Please no dual or multi-boxing on league. When we have folks waiting to join, taking up extra space is unfair.
    • If the league is full and others are waiting to join, prolonged unannounced AFKs will be kicked in order to add active players.

So far Mayhem Motel hasn't called the PPD, but it's only a matter of time. Get your tricks, gifts, and rocks while they last at Mayhem Motel - We'll leave the fright on for ya!

always loved the ToT, when is the start time btw?

So typically they initiate the Halloween event the first Tuesday in Oct, usually during their scheduled downtime/update period. I have not seen much mention aside from everyone's anticipation, but that is when it is typically started.

  15. That's it nearly Trick or Treating time again. From the group that brought loosely organized chaos in league format, we'll be back at it again. We're hoping to be a smidge more organized this year, but you know how it is herding cats. Mayhem Motel in PI is under new management and they haven't been warned about us yet.

Zone events during the Eternal Night to include:

    • Deadly Apocalypse (Banners)
    • Zombie Invasion
    • GM hunts (ft. Eochai and Jack in Irons)
    • general nuisance behavior

There will also be the option to be 'treated' with new temporary costumes, which while worn during the events, offer you the chance at holiday Tip missions.

You may also be awarded with special Halloween salvage which made be traded on Croatoa for an extra costume slot or a spider pet.

Badges, of course badges. For all of the witches, and werewolves, and vampires....Oh My! (something.... something.... zombies....)

Lastly, for fun, we're trying to go themed this year. The theme is Victorian Era horror.

Now, many of us work full time jobs and so this events cannot run constantly (with us in charge that is) so to maximize everyone's fun and rewards we ask a few things. If you need to go AFK briefly plz say so, please be participating, and always always always replace the team lead within the league with a 50. Otherwise, golden rule. Pls be nice. 'Tips Teams' within the league itself are not guaranteed as it can alter other events of the league play.

For some reason only a few of these are on the calendar.  It's very inconsistent.

Just to clarify there are 2 raid groups in the Hive. The first raid group that I (and my alternates) lead consists of 3 runs in a row. Lil Claw leads the second raid group right after with an additional 3 runs for a total of 6. There is also additional information listed for the Hamicide that LC runs on the weekends.

  17. I typically play on Torchbearer and whenever I have submitted a ticket for assistance, he is 'Johnny on the spot'. He's taken feedback about our Hami raids to the Dev team, fixed some bugged TFs (poor Katie), and has been all around helpful and proactive. We don't tend to submit tickets often, but whenever we do, GM Impervium is very prompt, courteous, and engaged in problem solving. I understand that many of the roles are filled with those volunteering their time, so I am appreciative of the assistance when it's needed. Thanks all.

  18. During the Early Bird Raid (around 1830-1900 EST) I lost about 1/3 to 1/2 of the league at the bud spawn. The only way that I am personally able to avoid it is by facing away from the buds at a distance, and only letting my pets attack. This pretty consistently happens every night for the last 2-3 weeks. I've told others where to find their crash reports. It seems to be the biggest issue with the first 2 runs of the first raid. The final run and the subsequent raid do not seem to be a problem. I am unsure if someone wants to sit in on this to get a better idea of what is happening first hand.

    Thx
