  1. Comes from the old "holy trinity" MMO mindset. I've seen teams refuse to start until they have a "healer" on board. For the frigging DFB trial. Seriously. You can run that with a full team of blasters and do just fine.

Yeah, those would be the same that would PM on my Emp troller, to which my response was always "Sorry, not a healer."

  2. I don't know.

If after two weeks of having the game around gives you problems to find a suitable name, then:

1.) You looked for the most generic ones.

2.) You tried to be a knockoff of a existing character from different brands and universes. Yes, I saw Gambit, Wonder Woman and a few others already.

3.) You didn't try hard enough.

We had to deal with that for years, so when you already got problem with a name now, with the playing field being reset, then I am sorry.

    Tough luck. :\

I'm fine with the current naming convention, and I say that as someone who lost a couple of names on Homecoming that I had since launch in CoH on Virtue.  Just like the game was originally, it forces us to be more creative.  Even in the comics, there's only one "Captain Marvel" in Marvel comics at a time, but then there was also Miss Marvel, Mar-Vell, etc. in existence.  I think it breaks the uniqueness of characters and part of the superhero genre a bit to have several characters running around with the exact same name in the same universe.

Take some time and come up with something unique for your character, they deserve it.  Creating new characters through the original life of CoH forced me to do that, and I was able to get about 90% of my character names on Homecoming because they were unique enough from previously.  The couple I lost were based on more common words/names anyway, so I adapted for them.

I have to agree with both of these statements.

I too prefer the unique naming system, since it would prevent 14,000,605 Doctor Strange's from running around. The "all the good names are taken" argument was used in the original forums as well, which was reputed by many players that continued to come up with good names.

  3. Back in 2004, Marvel did sue Cryptic Studios over City of Heroes since it was possible to create a character resembling their IP in the character creator.  From what I recall, Marvel lost.

    .

That aside, it's up to the Homecoming team if they want to enforce players creating homages or even outright ripoff of established characters from Marvel, DC, etc.  Personally, I don't see much reason to given that this whole game is currently unauthorized anyway and carries its own risks.

The reason Marvel did not win is because CoH's lawyer proved that they players that had created Marvel IP and play in game were Marvel employees. CoH had a reporting process in place and players were very proactive in self-policing because they did not want to see a repeat. The lawyer, by the way got a standing ovation at HeroCon.

As for the current Overlords, I don't think they've said anything, but just because this is not an authorized server doesn't mean Marvel/DC/etc won't swing a hammer.

Personally, I think it best to err on the side of caution and avoid characters that outright copy someone's IP.

  4. Don't forget -

    and the follow up -

I can't believe it took this far in the thread for those to be posted! Always my favourite...

...right after the Kronos Titan vs Exploding Steel Canyon building (which I have been unable to locate so far.)

  5. All these years and the same tired arguments just get recycled.

    Don't you people ever die?

    :)

Nah, it's the horse that's dead, they just keep beating on the poor creature.

  6. Dual pistol/Rad Armor sentinel in the picture, although I suppose any power set could technically apply.  After I locked on to the theme of the costume, I was thinking some sort of alternate dimension hero who(despite being somewhat ugly to humans) is very debonair and dashing. A swashbuckling Errol Flynn type that defeats opponents with wit and courtesy and flashy moves. Which fits the pistols move set and sparkly rad armor.

Well, if he sang, I'd say he sounds like the monster from 'A Monster in Paris'. :)

  7. Ok guys, so I went a little nuts with the character creator. This is totally not what I set out to create, but the pieces of the outfit just started to fall in place, so I had to run with it.  I REALLY need a good name for this hero/villain. Help me out?

    What are the powersets?

Just based on the costume, I'd say something like "Techno Mosquito" ?

  8. just the opposite as want to raise volume of glowies to find em easier ;p

You can record yourself screaming into a mic "OVER HERE" and make that the new glowie sound!

Or you can creep yourself out and use the "over here" from Predator with the volume turned up.

  9. Regarding duplicating copyrighted characters from movies/comics/etc. Back during in the first era of CoX, players were pretty incredible about self-policing and reporting. No one knows what happens now in the second era of CoX. You may just get grief regarding lack of originality. ;)

Edit: Oh, and it's good to see you using the proper term of "newb" since as a new player that is what you are. "noob" on the other hand is considered derogatory and generally refers to someone who thinks they know everything about the game, but really doesn't and will attempt to beat you over the head with their dizzying intellect.

  10. I spent a good amount of time yesterday using my lvl 40 brute to taunt enemies so lower level players could pound on them with impunity.

Drive by buffs in lowbie areas is one of my favorite things to do.

I miss ninja buffing... I should start doing that again. :)

Always enjoyed Ninja Buffing, Often I would join lowbie teams with my L50 Kin or Emp and just keep buffing the hell out of them.

  11. Angel Red

Protector was my home server, but I met Dramen at HeroCon and re-rolled my main on Justice so I could play with him online along with a bunch of others he introduced me to.

  12. My fondest memory is of the Protector Server Raids, where a bunch of the Protectorites would create a bunch of themed characters on the server being "raided' and cause general confusion. One of them we built a bunch of mimes. After a few "raids" several of the other servers raided Protector with Hami themed characters so everyone were bubblers. Even the devs got involved on that one and started dropping multiple monsters on the hill by the Talos rail. An absolutely complete blast.
