I'm failing to understand how fixing something that is useless, and making all of our powers useful right from the start is a bad thing.

Complete speculation on my part here, but getting rid of the various non IO enhancements (TO/DO/SO) would have been an eventual outcome.

Yes...well, unfortunately CoH isn't a SSAS, it is a client/server application with end users and the licensing agreement has always been between the end user and the IP holder...So it's not the same...You can say it is all you want, but it's not a per-user application...And I am really not sure what you are debating here @ShardWarriorI'm thinking you are just stirring the pot...Do you believe that NCSoft is going to allow HC to not have end user licensing?  Rather than just rebut my own statements, what are your thoughts?

Not here to stir anything, just participating in the discussion and providing my own personal point of view.  If that clashes with your opinion, there is nothing I can do about that.

I've no idea what NC will or will not do.  I'll leave it in the capable hands of the HC team who are in the thick of it to work out the details.

That SQL example is not the same and you know it...They license by the processing power not the user...so it's irrelevant the # of users...that's an apples to pizza comparison...

Well, yes - it is the same.  You're using software that someone else has licensed from Microsoft as part of said licensing agreement.  This is what SSAS is all about.

No way they'd take over HC.  There's code written by outside parties in HC.  We'd get a blank slate i24 server at best with the HC team completely cut out of the system.

Like I said earlier, they are going to take the data, start their own official server and shut down HC.  You are right about the data being valuable, but I don't think they'll use it like you think.

Not completely sold this is a given - NC would still have to maintain it and that is an expense for them.   Who knows?  They may see it as not worth the effort.

The only snag is that this would change Homecoming from a non-profit to a for-profit, which I don't think they want to do -- see other replies from them above.  I think that the HC team is trying to avoid the whole microtransaction nonsense entirely.  It's a hassle they don't need, and they know it would turn off a lot of people.  So it's probably better just to avoid it entirely.

Microtransactions or lootboxes?  My experience is most nowadays are ok with microtransactions for cosmetics and such.  It's those dastardly loot boxes they all despise.

Licenses are for a specific # of users

There are also Enterprise level licenses that allow for unlimited users.  Also, you are using SQL every time you login and play.  You are sending data back and forth to the database all the time.

And the answer is the same for any publicly traded company.  There is no such thing as good intentions if they have an obligation to shareholders.

Not really interested in derailing the thread on this, but I would be happy to take this to PMs to educate you on how this is not true in all cases.

Generally, no.  NCSoft and its representatives have a fiduciary duty to maximize profits for the company.  Can garnering good will be an effective strategy to help increase profits later?  Absolutely, in certain circumstances.  But that's not "good intentions", that's still maximizing profits.

You have to ask yourself, how would a gesture of good will in this scenario increase profits for them in some other way?  Are we all likely to go out and buy an NCSoft game tomorrow if negotiations go well?  How many of us?  Would that be more profitable than starting a legit COH server of their own and shutting down the pirate ones?

That's all that matters.  They have an obligation as a publicly traded company to focus on the bottom line.

I was speaking in general terms, not about NCSoft specifically.

Why does ANY "secrecy" exist in the negotiations at all? I mean, I understand that negotiations are on-going and may bear zero fruit, but why is there any secrecy in the process whatsoever? Why not just say "we've proposed X, and NCSoft may or may not take it", or "NCSoft has proposed Y, and we're considering our options". I just don't get what the purpose of the cloud is... is there a legal NDA that you're under? I don't know how the legal system works, but if there's an NDA, can you even tell us that you're under an NDA?

Are legal negotiations generally available for all the world to see?

Personally, I don't think the general populace needs to know the specifics here - I can only imagine the myriad of posts from armchair lawyers and Google law experts would make.  No thank you.

For that matter, how many of the people who believe the early game is a slog feel that way because they have years of accumulated experience before origin powers, temp powers, veteran powers, increased lowbie tohit, praetorian enhancements, amplifiers, increased XP curves, and so on.

That's sort of the point - the early game really isn't a slog and TOs were a help back before all the stuff you mentioned.  That is not the game anymore  and TOs don't really serve much of a purpose.

If I sell a lvl 5 Acurracy SO for 4000, and want to buy a lvl 5 damage for 7000, how does that help me?

You're already more than halfway there and in the examples given, you're not just getting 1 drop to sell, so its not just a 1 to 1 thing.  DFB rewards around 5 or 6 per run, not to mention any salvage you can sell.

As for the dangers of having SOs become commonplace at lower levels, I would say they already are commonplace via DFB/DiB/Summer BB etc. and it hasn't destroyed the whole IO balance.

You keep trying to make this sound small and easy, but it's technically complicated with giant repercussions for the lower level...

I never said or suggested anything of the sort with regard to the amount of work involved.  I'm quite sure it isn't a simple thing to do.  All I've said is that I would support the idea of removing an antiquated piece of the game that has no value anymore and replacing it with something better.  I believe that is worth discussion.

    1.  Not sure I really see the problem with TOs and DOs.   They appear to me to be somewhat balanced in comparison to the enemies you're facing.

    2.  They give your character a clear feeling of progression.  I like that my character appears to be getting more powerful vs what he's facing at each level.  The progression

of better enhancements is part of that.

    3.   Just curious how a new level 1 could afford to purchase SOs unless they already have a level 50 to finance them.  Wouldn't really be fair to a truly new player to be presented

with enhancements that he couldn't afford.

A level 1 can run a couple of DFBs and either slot or sell the SOs drops they get.  Expense is not really a problem anymore.

  14. Actually, I know quite a few people who play the game in the "normal way" by playing all the early content, but will hit up a DFB/DiB every so often for the SO and salvage drops to sell.

TOs were something of some use back in the day - the game is a lot different now.  I would agree removing them just for the sake of removing them is a lot of work for no real return.  However, I think the idea of replacing TOs with something better/more unique is worth discussion.

  15. 25 minutes ago, The Philotic Knight said:

This seems like a solution looking for a problem to me. You don't like TOs? Then ignore them, you have that power. Especially with our enhancement trays being 8 times bigger than it was before with the multiple tabs... I just don't see the issue with TOs existing. You either use them, or you don't. As others have mentioned, with XP boosters and P2W prestige enhancements available from level 1 and DFB being a thing... it's not like they're really relevant anyways. To remove them would take effort, and is it worth the limited Dev time for that?

That being said, if you want to apply to make code changes and do the work yourself and submit the work to save them the effort, well there's a pathway for that:

    https://forums.homecomingservers.com/forum/50-developers-corner/

Personally, I think any effort going into something that will replace/make better an aspect of the game that is (which you even admit TOs are)  irrelevant better is worth "limited Dev time".

I'm not saying SS scrappers would completely break the game by themselves. But when people talk about wanting balance, that's not a separate goal from wanting the game to be fun. CoH players talk a lot about how they like this game because it makes them feel super, so sure, characters should be powerful. But this is also a multiplayer game, and you don't feel very super when you're totally outclassed.

I totally understand where you are coming from, however I would argue that Incarnates and IOs have already caused certain ATs/combos to become redundant or even unnecessary.  Just speaking from my own experience here - I've been on TF runs where fully pimped out blasters are able to blow through everything and solo EBs solo without dropping any significant HP or END,  it makes the need for CC/Debuff/Heals "nice to have".

Also, this is only true if you are only looking at it from one side of the coin - it makes the assumption that everyone will select the "most powerful" combo there is and never try to play anything else.  This is not the goal of every player out there.

  17. Can't say I disagree, although I do find the early game fun in some aspects.  Personally, I don't believe I have ever slotted a TO enhancement ever and they don't sell for anything so eliminating them is not such a far off idea.  Especially since we can run DFB or DiB or Summer BB now and collect random SOs to use or sell.  Kind of makes DOs/TOs irrelevant.

  18. For clarity, I totally agree it was the Dev intent for Rage to have the -DEF crash.

What I object to is "what the Devs intended" being incorrectly passed off as the set-in-stone unchangeable rule.  We will never know whether the original Dev intent would have changed or not if the game were still running "live".  For all any of us know, the Devs would have found that the change was fine and left it at is.  They also could have found it didn't work the way they wanted and tried something completely different.  Nobody knows what they would have done.

It should not be used as an excuse to dismiss and not explore potential ideas here and now.
