  1. I think Earth/Nature is great CC/support combo. Earth also has Earthquake, which can be slotted with Force Feedback, which lowers recharge. If you can work in another FF power or two like Wall of Force and Project Will, it will go a long way to lower the recharge on Haste and Overgrowth. @Coyote's Earth/Cold build is probably a good starting point. Without /Cold's Infrigidate for single target, I expect you'd keep Stone Prison in.

5: I find using the Force of Will set absolutely imperative. Less so for me since I run Earth/Cold so I have Infrigidate to put Achilles, but a Sonic doesn't have that, so you want Weaken Resolve both as an attack with 3 damage IOs and as a way to reliably put Achilles debuff on an AV. However, that's actually the lesser reason... the main reason you want it is so that you can spam Wall of Force with a Force Feedback proc. It actually does decent damage for a Controller AoE (about 120-130 with 5x Positron (no Recharge) and the FF proc), but the main effect of spamming it is to punch up Recharge of your powers so that you have Stalagmites & Earthquake up for hte next spawn more easily, and can put out Volcanic Gasses more often.

Hi, @Coyote-- Curious if, in your experience, Wall of Force was effective (enough) in adding more FF procs (in conjunction with the one in Earthquake or Bonfire if Fire). Another topic (in Defender) seems to suggest otherwise. Thanks.

Except, we've got multiple people in this thread saying that trash melts in seconds, so the speed up of -Resistance "doesn't matter" there since they get wiped out too fast (in team play).

Yes there's a lot of trash to take out, but that trash gets taken out quickly (per unit of trash).  Sure, there's a LOT of trash to take out, but individually few of them last long at all ... especially if you've got a team with you.  Trash may comprise 80% of what you defeat, but trash won't be consuming 80% of the time you're fighting.

If that's what it's like (at +4), that hardly seems interesting. I'll probably stick to duoing or roll another alt at that point. A group packing that much damage probably is going to be fine on the boss also then--even if I'm alt tabbed and watching Community on Netflix. So again, it's still seconds you're shaving off. I'm not eating my vegetables and playing Sonic, @Redlynne:)..

But killing of minions and lieutenants fast doesn't impress me much, anything can do that. Sonic can even do that.

For as much as belittling the ability to tear down a AV/GM quickly, I mean...what else is there? What content are you running where you're struggling with minions/LTs? If you're already steamrolling, you're unlikely to notice zero debuffs from -100% debuffs.

I wasn't talking about difficulty but about efficiency. And being efficient on the boss is great, but I was just saying you spend a lot of time on trash--and killing that fast saves time, too. I wasn't belittling Sonic but trying to elevate other power sets to not being perceived as subpar--and they have benefits (IMO) also.

  5. Does anyone disagree with the assertion that even if Sonic is better target on boss fights, that you only spend a portion of your play time in combat engaged in fighting bosses? Anyone care to put some numbers to that--so that you're saying Sonic is x% better than (other power set) y% of the time, but the other 100%-y% of the time, Sonic is worse?

For a made up example, say Sonic is 30% more damage for two 5 minute boss fights over a 30 minute run. Is it the difference in beating the content or would you have won anyway--but you just saved 15 seconds--while the other 20 minutes may have gone faster with better AOE powers. And also having slows, -to hit, stuns, etc. might have their own subjective benefits. I don't have real test data to bear this out--wish I did, but I do think these questions are more relevant than trying to say Sonic is the wrong power to use vs bosses.

Anyway, I just posit that for future Defenders dropping by this forum that they don't all feel it's Sonic or bust, because many players feel the need to min max to what is "best", when the assumptions that said it were best were incorrect or the marginal benefit of that best vs the rest did not really amount to much. But I'm just a noob, so what do I know :)?

-hit is absolutely useful though, both solo and in teams.
You have to remember there is a wide variety of players in this game, and an even wider power level between characters. Not everyone will be defence capped or even close, so -hit is always useful as a reverse defence buff.

I tend to go on theme and the actual powers themselves, I.e cones or PBAoE focus, and like to focus on blasting to kill rather than to debuff.

I think I'm just going to follow this advice anyway. It's a game after all.

And as I mentioned earlier, I suspect the fact that Sonic's payoff is mostly confined to boss fights, which is not what you'll be fighting 100% of the time. I can live without being marginally better just part of the time (especially given it'll probably be a better choice for the rest of the time).

I’m not a fan of sonic because I just hate the idea of screaming at someone to defeat them!

    Uh, yes! This!

  7. It seems a greater problem that all of the debuffs in the game except -resist (and -regen) have been essentially rendered useless. And similarly, defensive power sets as well. So I can go Rad or Dark, but their debuffs aren't doing anything--and the only discussion is whether the opportunity cost of giving up sonic's debuff for higher damage is worth it or not (and more than likely Sonic is the better option). So my 2 thoughts are:

    1) How material is the damage loss you give up to play a more appealing set--2%? 10%? 30%?

    2) What is % of time spent on the boss fight vs clearing trash--and does the time spent on trash, mean some may be overestimating -resist's value? Maybe it's a wash, if trash is quicker the entire run, and the boss takes 20 more seconds to kill.

Maybe a corruptor or controller would be a better option.

  8. I was checking out this old thread, because I was thinking about doing a duo also (but with a MM). On the Controller side, I was curious how Plant/Dark compares to Fire/Dark. Having confusion seems pretty handy and damage should be good. I'm not a fan of illusion, because it doesn't feel controllery enough. Also considering Defender, but I'm not a fan of /Sonic, so I was looking at Rad or Dark/Rad or Dark. Not a fan of Time either (sadly), even though it's top tier. Thanks.

Depends are you duoing to 50 together mainly or post 50 content? Earth would be able to lock things down quickly so the fire/cold corr could scourge away. Dark control tohit debuffs would go with /colds shields as well.

Yeah we want to check out the post 50 content. How is earth different than say Darkness or other primaries (with AOE immobilize)? On the secondary, what do folks think of EA vs Time? How would a Fire/Cold Corr benefit from Amp Up?

  10. I'm surprised at how few builds and topics are on EA. I also am trying to pick a primary for EA to run with a Fire/Cold Corruptor (also looking at /Time). Anyone got any advice? Thanks.

  11. I presume this enhancement here is Overwhelming Force.

I see it on the Merit Vendor in Steel Canyon for 100 Merits. Reading the tooltip, it's unique and can only be applied to one power. Since every power you have has a KB, it's still not a silver bullet unless there are other enhancements like this one. So again, it comes to playing smart, using hover--knocking straggler into the pile instead of mobs away from the tank.
