This is definitely not one of those tanking Masterminds... on a team fighting purples I stay well back from the action and mostly worry about maintaining my assorted buffs and giving my pets specific targets so they don't wander off and get in to trouble. As long as the pets stay inside my Sonic Dispersion and focus on eliminating specific targets, they're pretty durable. When things get chaotic I put them all on bodyguard, drop Liquefy and pray. My current build does have Medicine but all it really does it allow me to recover faster from a non-fatal encounter, and I think I can accomplish that just as well with inspirations and procs. I prefer Repair to Aid Other for pets, mainly because I like the longer range. Repair can also take my Assault Bot from nearly dead to 100% in one use, which I like a lot better than re-summoning him. Soloing, I prefer to keep the difficulty low enough that my alpha strike gets rid of the minions, then the Assault Bot w/ Disruption Field can tackle what's let in melee. Sonic Resonance can really debuff a boss's damage resistance, so hard targets are manageable. If I'm soloing against foes that like to melee, I will put Sonic Repulsion on a Protector Bot and duck behind it for protection. (It's also hilarious.) I built quite a few +Recharge bonuses in to this build, though I'm not sure how much they really matter. I suspect they will make my Pulse Rifle attacks into a smoother attack chain, but the only slow powers I wait for are Repair and Liquify. It might be better to make a very endurance-focused build, or see how close to soft-cap I can get my defenses.

So my Robotics/Sonic Resonance Mastermind reached 47th level and I figured I would just take a look at the forums to see what all the other Robot/Sonic Masterminds were doing with their IOs. Well, that didn't work out, so he's my future build... unless someone talks me out of it. I wasn't really building for any specific bonuses, except that I wanted to cap Smashing and Lethal resistance. It has mediocre defenses, some recharge, and probably enough knockback to be annoying. For me, the pros of a Crab Spider are being tough and essentially immune to crowd control while being able to engage in ranged combat, melee and/or summon pets. Playing a Crab does give you that badass feeling. I really hate being the first guy to faceplant when things go wrong, and I don't have to worry about that with a Crab. My own Crab is designed specifically for playing on teams and exemplaring, and it handles that very well.

To me, travel powers are a quality of life issue. They just make the game more fun, so I always take one. Wolf Spider Armor won't make or break your build, but it's got some useful bonuses that don't require any extra enhancement slots to work. If you find yourself starved for slots, you might consider it. -
Coming back to the Crab - build help please?

My Crab uses Slice and Arm Lash all the time, and I do think they look cool. Rule of Cool is all the excuse you need, really. Your Crab has more attacks and a boatload more recharge bonus than mine. Do you actually need all those attacks? For example, do you really need both Channelgun and Longfang as ranged filler attacks, or could you lose one and allocate those slots to more powerful abilities? Your build is kinda short on procs/uniques. You have the Gladiator's Armor +3% Defense, but what about the Steadfast Protection +3% Defense? Or the Shield Wall +5% Resistance? I'd definitely rather have one of those than an extra slot in Combat Training: Offensive. Pets are fun, though my own experience with them was that your Spiderlings die almost instantaneously if you're fighting anything really challenging, especially if you close to use melee attacks. Your mileage may vary, but I didn't find the Spiderlings were worth the investment. -
My own crab is designed to exemplar, though I do it by having all my IOs attuned so that I still have more-or-less full set bonuses down to level 17. Back on live when my Crab had pets, I only had the Disruptors and the Blaster, and they were not perma. The Spiderlings were often killed so quickly that I didn't feel I was getting my money's worth.

I think I would soft-cap my defenses and then see how close to perma-pets I could come. Still, with your current emphasis on recharge, you could get a bit more AoE defense (and some damage resist) if you 5-slotted Fortification with Aegis. But where to come up with 2 more slots? - Does the Kismet +6% To-Hit IO really make a big difference on top of your already-substantial Accuracy bonuses? Especially given that it doesn't make your pet any more accurate? - Is 8 points of knockback protection really hugely better than 4 points, especially when your pets are doing a lot of your DPS? Perhaps you could lose that Steadfast Protection: Knockback Protection?

Shortly after I respecced to version 2 I went on a Penelope Yin TF and as soon as that was done, I went on a BAF. During the BAF I marveled at how effortlessly I was keeping up all my toggles while also spamming my attack chain non-stop against the AVs. Then I noticed that Tough, Weave and Assault had shut off when I exemplared and I'd forgotten to turn them back on. I do want people to tell me if my theories are all wrong. I've largely forgotten all the finer points of CoH math. Some combination of better end cost reduction in Arm Lash and more +End and End Discount from Annihilation does make this version run my nine toggles better than version 1. I don't find myself converting all my other inspirations into Catch a Breath anymore. Many of the +End set bonuses are pretty puny and/or carried in lower-level sets, like Eradication. I'm not sure how many of my current sets I'm willing to give up to get those, but they will be a consideration for version 3. I'm sure I can find a way to squeeze all six slots of Superior Spider's Bite in there somewhere, since that's the biggest +End set bonus available. The accolades are going on my to-do list! -

I'm using Annihilation in order to get the 3% endurance discount, so I need to slot five of the six. I can either drop the proc or I can drop the Accuracy/Damage IO, which is the one most eroded by Enhancement Diversification. Speaking of endurance discounts, Mids indicates that I should have 30.25% but in-game combat statistics show 24.66%, which I guess means they are being applied individually for diminishing returns. - Annihilation 3% discount x 3 - Preventive Medicine 3.75% discount x 1 - Reactive Defenses 3.75% discount x2 - Unbreakable Guard 2.5% discount x 4 -

Even more endurance discounts! And four attacks with -Resist procs. I believe that boosting the whole team's damage with dual-Assault and debuffing enemy damage resistance will generate more damage than using procs to generate damage directly. I found Victory Rush quite feeble and difficult to use, so I replaced it with Vengeance. -

I definitely could go higher on defenses and resistance. I admit this Crab build has a strange focus on endurance efficiency rather than heavy survival. It's strictly intended for teams where helpful teammates might chip in and increase my defense/resistance, and it's been successful so-far. One key to playing a Crab, I think, is keeping your positional defense numbers displayed on the screen all the time and if you start taking damage, find out immediately if your defenses have been debuffed and hit your inspirations as needed. In instances where the defense debuffs are really flying, Venom Grenade, Frag Grenade and Suppression make a decent attack chain for hiding in back. Despite packing this build with endurance discounts, it still has endurance issues. For example, the whole Obliteration set has a rather lackluster 18.55% end cost reduction, and spamming Arm Lash is a real drain during a long boss fight. I'm working on a revised version with even better endurance efficiency to keep nine toggles running at once. A couple other issues I need to address: - Channelgun with no damage enhancement is too weak, even for a really weak filler attack, so I'm fixing that. - Frag Grenage is currently causing raw knockback, which is sometimes helpful and sometimes just can't be used to avoid annoying the tanker. I'm going to convert that to knockdown. -
Hybrid Melee/Ranged Crab?

My "ranged" Crab Spider still has Slice and Arm Lash, and uses them to finish off the harder targets not removed by the AoEs. Single-target damage is still poor, but at least he looks cool doing it. Having some melee attacks also gives you access to IO sets that might be useful. -
Maybe nobody remembers me, but I'm back and I have a new Crab Spider. A few notes about this build: - I'm trying to abuse the I24 endurance discount sets to run ALL the toggles. - I exemplar a lot. Incarnate powers are fine, but I want to rock those weekly strike targets. I am accumulating attuned versions of these sets. - I have a lot of attacks and no pets, so I've skimped on the recharge. - I love Super Jump and never turn it off.
