I can't even get myself to take toons like that out of the character creator even if it's done respectfully. Off to make a cultural appropriation thread. Jk. But I am going to look to see if anyone else has made one.

Also pretty quick to assume without even knowing if the person is of Native American heritage themselves.

I wasn't assuming, someone who's Native American using actual Native American beliefs wouldn't have designed that character, but at the same time, it doesn't seem like it was disrespectful or anything, it just makes me think they should meet some Native Americans and pick up some books or documentaries and learn more. Like I'm not Native American so it makes me feel slightly uncomfortable to talk about these things, but it doesn't seem like literally anyone is being hurt by them making up something like that that's sort of stereotypical but not demeaning even if it's not bad. It's just uncomfortable because it's a reminder of who isn't in these games. I know tons and tons of Native Americans in real life and picked up a bunch of books as well as finding some documentaries and videos myself and seeing a character like that is mostly just a reminder they aren't here. So is the random Māori-inspired dude who's on the City of Heroes loading screen, but who I don't think is really a character in-game. I watch and read a bunch of stuff about Māori and was actually learning the language with some of the songs and shows that exist, but that's just a reminder there also aren't a lot of Māori in CoX despite the loading screen guy.

There seems to be basically nothing wrong with making any of this stuff any more than it's wrong that a Black guy is the voice actor behind Samurai Jack, but it probably should make us uncomfortable to see because it's just a reminder of the people who aren't helping to play and develop the game. Maybe subconsciously that's also the real reason I haven't sent in apps to try to help develop the game, because subconsciously I think it's kind of messed up that we want to make characters based on American Indians and Indian Indians and Māori Filipino and Zulu culture or just K-Pop, and in many cases that's totally legit because we have a connection to those things, but the people who were originally from that culture aren't here, so we should feel uncomfortable even if our connections to various cultures are still legit. It's not what we're doing that's wrong, it's what we're not doing.

Can Voice Actors Play Different Races? – NERDGEIST

That last article probably puts it perfectly, it's basically just a reminder that there are not enough non-white people making characters, rather than being anything wrong in and of itself:

By this point I am feeling a little confused.

Because I am totally fine with Phil LaMarr playing a Japanese guy and I am for some reason not ok with Jenny Slate playing a Biracial girl.

Am I being reactionary?

Do I have double standards?

Maybe it is yes to both of these. I do not think that someones race determines if they can voice a character. If race was important in this sense then we would never get any anime dubbed.

In the end I do not think the actors should be blamed for this and the only solution is that we need a more diverse group of creators. Now before anyone starts accusing me of saying that I demand a white genocide and that I want rid of white creators, no I am not saying that!

I am saying that getting rid of a White actress who plays a Biracial character on a Tv show created by a group of White people seems rather hollow. It does not fix the problem. Because the problem is that there are so few non white characters in these shows. I do not think people do this on purpose, it is probably subconscious but we can do better and need to do better.

For her part Jenny Slate has been very gracious about this. Though the cynic in me wonders how much of this is just damage control.

So yes  only solution I can see is that we get more creators who are not white to accurately create characters who themselves are not white. Meanwhile get more voice actors who themselves are not white and let them play roles that do not necessarily match their skin color. Before you judge me, just think how many big name voice actors can you name who are not white?

It is not perfect and I know someone is going to tell me that people should only be allowed to voice characters of the same skin color but that seems regressive to me and could lead to assholes saying that only straight should voice straight or some bullshit like that. (I am not saying sexuality and race are the same I am just saying that someone out there would make the argument)

Racism comes in many forms, but trying to be inclusive is not one of them.

Am I making any sense?

So that's enough of that, if this post needs to be moved then OK, now back to just showing costumes off.
