SR/Staff build

My current tank is level 42 and despite relatively low damage, I actually really dig this character.  This is my first attempt at a build and would appreciate any feedback.

Really good job for a first attempt without being already level 50 with the toon !

Enojoying myself a SR / staff tanker, all i can say you, to be honnest, is that you will almost never find the good build (AKA the one you love to play, above the Méta one).

There are just a few things i would change, if i were you :

  • As you stated, Staff is not the best damage dealer of the game 😉 so, IMHO, Taunt will help you a lot on this type of low damage / debuff builds. By not taking Serpent's reach, you lack ranged multi-target solutions to take / keep agro. Arcane Bolt seems to lack +Taunt secondary effect.
  • Guarded Spin is awesome but SR really dont need more def : the higheest Defence cap is 59 (for Trials) so any points above is direct loss of slots.
  • Rune of Protection is a cool way to raise Resistance but in your build you lack Global recharge : having no Hasten you will be able to enjoy your rune 90 seconds every 320 seconds so more than 5 minutes. SR having a 20% recharge buff, this armor is a top contender to reach very high amount of Global Recharge to reach a "perma hasten" (AKA having less than 120 seconds recharge on your hasten, making it permanent).
  • Staff is great on SR cause it gives Resistance to a Defence set... on paper 😉 The real "weakness" of SR is not the resistance (having the resistance mechanics make SR super tough on tanker cause even at 40% health, you should still have more than 1000 HP lol). With my SR Staff tanker, i almost always use Form of the Soul : cause IMHO the real "hole" of SR is the lack of regen / recovery power.
  • Last but not least, i advise you to always choose the incarnate Alpha and Destiny BEFORE building your toon : for SR, people often use a mix of Cardiac / Musculature Alpha and Ageless / Rebirth Destiny based on what your build will need (or not)

Here is the build i enjoy when i use my SR staff tanker : SR staff V4.mxd

Have Fun !

  • Thanks 1

  • 4 weeks later

I've got a staff/SR version of all 4 melee ATs, my first being Brute which I've played a LOT and got all 1531 badges.

Next is my Tank who is now 50 and T3or T4 on all incarnates.

Scrapper is 38, Stalker is 30.

For the tank, I didn't bother with Combat Jumping, no need for extra +DEF when already at DEF cap for the 2 positionals, none of the other defences matter at that point.

Similarly, no need for Maneuvers for the same reason.

The Rune of Protection looks nice on paper but as Tsuko says, its duration is too short to be a really useful tool in your defence toolbox.

I dropped Precise Strike from my build as I never ended up using it much. My normal attack chain is to leap into a group of enemies, Eye of the Storm, Guarded Spin, Innocuous Strikes and cycle between these three with the occasional Sky Splitter and Serpents Reach thrown in depending on the circumstances. I've also got my camera zoomed back to view the entire battlefield, ready to use Taunt  and/or Serpents Reach on mobs approaching the squishies. I've got Perma-hasten (usually!) with macros attached to Sky Splitter and Guarded Spin so the Guarded Spin macro sets Practiced Brawler to auto then executes the attack, while Sky Splitter sets Haste to auto and then attacks. This means usually one or the other is set to auto, with the shorter duration Practiced Brawler being on the more frequently triggered Guarded Spin.

As a tank your job is aggro control so IMO you MUST take taunt, no question. If you don't take taunt don't play a tank, you are just gimping yourself :)

I even took taunt on my Brute specifically so I could taunt Yellow Mitos in Hami raids!

This is my build, its got a lot of +regen as there is no self heal with SR armour and also +HP, I've got 2600 ish HP with the accolades.

The main issue I have is when exemplared down to the 20s my attack chain is poor - end up using Kick to pad it out 🙂 At least it looks like Kalllisti is kicking the enemy in the nuts! The Halloween House of Horrors TF was a genuine trial of patience 🙂

Some of the resits aren't as high as I'd like, particularly energy and negative, which are important in ITFs, but I've gone Melee Hybrid Incarnate which gives a resist and regen buff.

I find usually if I end up taking damage, it drops to about 50% then stops when the scaling damage resists kick in, unless there is overwhelming dmg from Marauder's fist attack or such. So I'm not that bothered with the lower resists. I've done a couple of +4 ITFs and the temple ambush was a but tricky but I was the only team member who didn't die, although I did empty my inspiration tray 🙂
