Water/Plant Feedback

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks -- synthesized some water/plant builds here and came up with the following. Soft-capped to Ranged and almost E/N, hover-blaster style.

I assume you have to go Clarion for the mezz protect (I don't think there's an perm-mezz protect blaster power in other sets?).

I tried to slot out Vines for proc damage but could only go with 4 instead of 5 damage procs as I needed the 2-slot Basilisk for ranged def.  Any know if Vines is worth it as a proc damage power?  If not, I could probably move slots around a bit and take another 1-slot power.

Appreciate the feedback!

Looks like a strong build to me!

It may be neither here nor there as I know the current slotted set bonus is meaningful, but squeezing multiple damage procs into water jet really helps make up for water's main weakness, single target damage. The instant recharge from tidal lets you double dip on those high proc percentages.

Also related to single target, strangler can be turned into a very heavy hitter with procs.

I hover blast with my water/temporal as well, relying on ranged defense. Since I don't have that extra punch from melee powers, bosses can be a bit of a slog.

Not sure that theft of essence in dehydrate will make much difference for you, and your sustain should keep you running strong on end anyhow. May be better to drop a lady grey proc in there.

Your slotting choices are overall very solid in any case.

Thanks for the tips.  How is Vines with procs as a proc-nuke?  Better to just slot out strangler and use it Single-Target more often?

I wish I could figure out how to move slots around and keep the >45% ranged def to proc out Water Jet ...

Not sold on spore cloud. 3.3 second cast time + blaster level damage means you won't be using it for anything other than AVs/GMs. While every bit of debuff helps I'd rather just let other ATs that do it better handle that. I passed on it. I suppose if your plan is to solo AVs/GMs then that -regen debuff justifies the pick.

I like smashing face with my blasters. For contrast this is my stabby stab cactus build, softcapped to S/L/E/N/Ranged and is a self sufficient TF speed runner by level 30 when exemped down. Thorn burst is poo but it's a pbaoe for the winter set and it's thematic for a cactus, sort of.

I defer to Nemu's experience in plant more broadly, as I haven't used it much.

I can say that I don't see a lot of added value in using vines as a proc bomb, even if the power works well in this capacity. You already have really strong aoe in your primary.

In general blasters don't need procs in their attacks unless the proc starts with force and ends with feedback. They already do enough damage. IOs help shore up survival and that benefits blasters a lot more than adding additional damage. Same reason I don't bother taking assault on blasters when 1-2 attacks builds enough defiance damage buff that eclipse the buff assault provides.

Most /plant builds I see opt for pure ranged play. I always play melee blasters and so I shared my build as an alternative reference. Plant is one of those secondaries that could go either way. From a build perspective there are benefits to taking a few melee powers for set bonuses even if you don't plan on using them.

Thanks, that's solid feedback and much appreciated.  I was going to try Hover blasting and avoiding melee attacks on this build, to the extent possible.  So there's some orientation difference there, which is fine.  But your build has some good tips.  I might swap out Ragnarok for an Artillery set in Geyser so I can pull some +ranged slots from something else.  I'll also probably move around proc'd strangler.  Need to do some theory crafting.

Here's an alternative iteration.  I am just kissing soft-cap ranged at 44.99% (if I +5 some of the Def IOs, vs. 44.78% if I Catalyst the LotG sets) but I was able to slot a FF recharge proce into Water Burst.  Not sure if Tactics was needed but threw it in.  Kept Spore Cloud at high levels for AVs / hard targets, figure every bit helps and they'll be enough +end/recovery buffs on teams to help - it was only 1 slot and seemed like something worth keeping in the kit if ever needed.  I could go higher on ranged def If I go back to 6-slotting Artillery in Water Burst, not sure if a little buffer on ranged def is worth it.

I guess the question is whether the 6-slot Numina in Wild Fortress is worth it for the extra absorb vs. 6-slotting with Preemptive Op for +end?  Numina's seems to give >100% absorb which seemed useful.   Given this is supposed to be a ranged build (where possible) I kept the focus on ranged def with a resistance buffer for E/N and S/L via slotted Tough and Charged Armor, vs going for the S/L def orientation that could be done with Scorp Shield.

What are thoughts on Incarnate powers?  Go Musc for the 45% damage increase?  And Clarion 120sec mezz protect I assume? Others?

I'd drop vengeance and fit in combat jumping.

1 - It adds to your defense and works with hover

2 - Plenty of things this game does -fly and usually those powers also immob. An immobilized blaster is a dead blaster and weave only provides immob resistance, not protection. CJ solves that.

Keeping with the hover blasting theme this is how I would build it. Shuffled power picks around to provide maximum self sustainability by level 30 so you can help speed through TFs when exemped down.

I see a lot of people using 1 piece resist proc uniques from both defense sets. They single slot the uniques in one defense power and 3 slot other defense powers with 3 piece LOTG for the hp bonus. Why not just slot the defense power 1 LOTG 7.5 and 3 piece shield wall or reactive defenses including the proc? it takes the same amount of slots. At 3 slots both shield wall and reactive defense provide +HP and SW provides more HP than 3 LOTGs.

Regarding wild fortress, I find the heal/absorb pitiful in all blaster sustains, it's not enough to carry you through a tough fight and they are better viewed as a quality of life improvement that tops you off between the fights. If you do the math on some of the sustains they amount to about an extra 9 HP regenerated per second when enhanced for heal at the ED cap, a waste of slots if you ask me. I'd rather have premptive in there because I can always use more end recovery, it gives a recharge bonus, and it has the same ranged def bonus as 6 piece numinas. People are hung up on heals. A few heal IOs in dehydrate does far more than fulling slotting blaster sustains for heals.

I left some room for procs as well, enjoy.

@Nemuthanks man, lots of great stuff to consider in your version.  i'll take some time to digest it.

question:  saw you were forced to eliminate Hasten ... looks like that has pretty significant impact on the recharge time of certain powers like Geyser (went from 30 secs to 45+ secs)  and to a lesser extent Whirlpool and Water Burst.  woudl it be worth fitting it back in (have to eliminate Fly pool and stay on the ground with CJ, Hasten, Superspeed)?

what's your take on incarnate powers?  Musculate for +dmg and Clarion for mezz protect?  Seems like Agility would help solve the no-hasten approach but leaves mezz vulnerable.

Oops, missed hasten in your original build. If you want to fit hasten back in drop after burner and a slot from spores and 2 slot hasten. There's wiggle room in the build for that.

Incarnates is really to your own taste, I'd probably go musculature. I always take clarion for blasters. Degen, diamagnetic or reactive are fan favorites for interface but I've been messing around paralytic and gravitic. Honestly Interface has little impact for casual play and teaming, same with lore.

Hybrid is a tossup between melee core for some resist and status protection or support for team def buff.

The good thing with incarnates is that you can craft all of them switch them around to your taste.

I think with the addition of combat jumping (Leaping) there's not room for the Speed power pool as well, so to get Hasten back and keep CJ I'd have to drop flight for Speed pool (Hasten/SS) - which isn't the end of the world, just not be a "hover" blaster but still could be at range.  How do you feel about having the extra down-time without Hasten?  An extra 15 seconds on recharge time for Geyser seemed like it could be worth avoiding.

If it is indeed a 15 second difference, it would give me pause for sure. That is huge, although it is annoying that hasten seems so essential for optimized builds, and I can respect the choice to drop it in favor of other functionality.

Switching to ss for travel and dropping flight is hard to quantify. It really comes down to your preferred strategy and what fits the theme best.

If we went for by the numbers pure optimization, I think every blaster would end up with hasten, cj, and fighting, and would pick a travel power from one of these pools. That said, a good half of my characters fly both for theme and because I love flying in this game.

Hover has very strong +fly, and is not so easily taken to the ground with Mez/debuff,though immobs can still be a problem on their own merit.

Here's a revised version.  Hasten doesn't seem to be shaving as much time off Geyser as in the other build, maybe missing some global recharge vs a prev iteration.  Had to move some slots into CJ to make up for losing the def from both CJ and Hover.    It looks like a choice of Geyser at 39 seconds (with hasten up) vs. 48 seconds in the no-hasten fly build.  I suppose one could hope for +recharge from teams (SB etc) and just go w/o hasten for the fly theme, if we keep CJ.
