I was going through my missing Exploration badges and being frustrated with this one. 

Is there any way to get this without setting up an Arena match (something I've never done and don't know how to do) and relying on other players?

You don't have to rely on other players if you can multibox.

 

1. Multibox with two characters.
2. Your first character accesses arena using either /arenalist or Menu > Arena(Z)
3. Press "Create Event".
4. Change Random Map to Cage Match
5. Set Numbers of Players to "2"
6. Enable "Invite Only" near "Start Event" button
7. Invite your other character using /arenainvite <char name>, /ai <char name>, or right click > Invite to Arena Event
8. Switch to your other character to accept.
9. Switch back to your first character to Start Event.

Noob moment. Multiboxing? Is that running two (or more) copies of the game? Do I need seperate accounts?

It's running multiple game instances in a single computer. For example simultaneously running two homecoming.exe. You will need at least two usernames, each username has at least one character.

You can also ask in game for help. Best place is in Pocket D since the Arena hub next to the villain side is within shouting distance of most folks in the zone.

I thought of that. No one answered and no one around, hence not having to rely on other players.
