Can I slot the baby pets and not cast them?

Sorry newbee question, but I noticed several All Pet buff slots (+ def + res).  Can I take the baby pets slot them for buffage and not cast them, but still get the bonus?  Or does one pet have to be alive for it to work?

Sure, you get the buffs whether or not you cast the pets they're in.

 

But I think you may be underestimating the contribution of your minions.

All pets add to the over all DPS to a target. Consider each pet a walking DoT for most part, focus firing will help that more.
