Interesting little oddity for your Netflix queue list...

Despite the big banner from from the same studio as Spiderverse, there's not one shared senior cred on it.

That said, it seems to share something of the same sense of humour and fluid art style.

It looks like someone took League of Legend's K/DA group and made a whole movie out of it. K-pop isn't my usual bag but the music is catchy. The anime-inspired art style works pretty dang well, too. The demons adopting their own band persona to fight the heroine trio is a fun twist and if there are any plot connections to the unhealthy obsessions fans can develop with idol groups, this could actually be pretty interesting.

It's actually disappointing that the antagonists in this thing manifest as another band. In reality, the producers behind these acts are horrible and exploitative.

I lived in Japan during the 90s. A Japanese friend of mine had two sons who were recruited by a Korean music producer, because they had "the look".

They couldn't do a damn thing lol. They didn't sing or play instruments or anything. When you get picked up, they basically put you through a song and dance boot camp. Every aspect of their lives are managed and some of the earnings go back to pay off the debt for the training and other fees.

Not just in the East.

I’m aware Take That’s fame stops dead at the edge of the North American continental shelf… but if you can, do yourself a favour and find Better Man on streaming.

Yes, it’s a true(ish) story, but if it helps, think of Robbie Williams as an outlandish cartoon caricature of a popstar. The real Rob would probably agree.

It’s laced with vicious invective against the music industry, the band and the man himself. And it’s an astonishing, moving, gut wrenching and funny piece of filmmaking that deserved better at the box office and Oscars. (And there are tunes too.)
