What do you consider the "natural" pairing for armors that don't have a direct match?

I'm making one of each elemental pair, and getting into ones I haven't rolled before. So far I have:

  • Electric Armor / Electrical Melee
  • Ice Armor / Ice Melee
  • Fiery Aura  / Fiery Melee
  • Dark Armor / Dark Melee

and I just made a

  • Stone Armor / Stone Melee

(I can't stand Radiation Melee so I'm skipping Rad/Rad)

That leaves 5 more armors:

  • Bio Armor
  • Invulnerability
  • Shield Defense
  • Super Reflexes
  • Willpower

And a baker's dozen attack sets:

  • Battle Axe
  • Claws
  • Broad Sword
  • Dual Blades
  • Electric Melee
  • Energy Melee
  • Katana
  • Kinetic Melee
  • Martial Arts
  • Psionic Melee
  • Savage Melee
  • Spines
  • Street Justice
  • Staff Fighting
  • Super Strength

  • Titan Weapons

  • War Mace

What do you consider the "natural" or most thematic pairing for each armor? (Not looking for the overpowered min/max pairing, thematic only)

I'm leaning towards:

  • Bio Armor / Spines or / Savage
  • Invulnerability / Super Strength or / Energy Melee
  • Shield Defense / Martial Arts or / Street Justice, or the medieval one-handed weapons: Mace, Broad Sword, etc.
  • Super Reflexes / Any of the fast two-handed weapons (Claws, Dual Blades, Katana, Staff), or open-hand attacks. But never Titan Weapons; SR is all about momentum.
  • Willpower / Anything, maybe pair Titan here? Don't want sets with knockback because that defeats the mob-based regen.

What do you consider the thematic natural pairing for the last 5 armors?

For a more unusual but thematic combo I have a Praetorian Shield Defense/Psionic Melee (with Fighting power pool). Praetoria has a lot of psionic mobs (eg the Syndicate) so that implies that psionic powers can also come from training. I wouldn't consider it thematic with a Primal character but I think it fits a highly trained Praetorian concept.

I have a Bio Armor/Spines as well whose concept is a person who was experimented and genetically modified for the theme so that fits with yours.

I'm pretty much the same for all of your pairings but I'd also pair Titan Weapons with Invulnerability (same type of theme as Super Strength) and, for a specific concept, Ice Armor with Titan Weapons as well (Frost Giant type concept). Earth and Fire would pair with that as well for a giant type character concept.

This is a very subjective question.

  • Bio/savage or bio/spine are both thematic imo. I personally would take savage just because the frenzy stacks provide additional recharge which benefits bio armor.
  • Invuln/ss is the classic super man combo theme, however you could go with invuln/street justice for a similar theme while avoiding rage crash. Invuln with weapons would also work (you could be really strong and able to swing giant "Titan" weapons around to attack with).
  • SR/claw, SR/katana, and SR/MA would be my go to thematic pairings. You could also pair it with /savage or /staff for theme as well.
  • I personally don't find shield/MA to be thematic (MA to me is all about hand-to-hand combat which seems weird to use while holding a shield, though it is a powerful combination). Besides the one handed weapons as you suggested, you could consider shield paired with energy/kinetic melee also (think something like Black Panther where the shield absorbs kinetic energy and then you're able to use it to attack enemies with).
  • I could see themes for WP paired with a lot of stuff including claws, psionic, katana, DB, TW, MA, spines, etc.

All good points, thanks!

Good points - and I'd forgotten about most of the Shield skins, it can look like stone, energy, psi, darkness, etc, for all sorts of concept pairings.
