I'm a new base builder, have watched a lot of the youtube vids and read the guides here but I can't figure out if there's a way to brighten  up the entrance to my base without using items like torches/lamps etc. I tried every different sky effect and they all seem to not vary much or change the lighting in the base at all

If you haven't, I suggest joining Dacy's discord. Everyone who builds bases hangs out there. Answer to your question, in edit mode Options on the bottom left, Lighting Type, Outdoor Sky Lighting.

The vids you've been watching may have already explained it, but the lights don't have to be hung on something visible like a ceiling or wall.   The brighter ones can be embedded, hidden just under the surface of the terrain to provide an ambient light.   Stealthnight is right, though.  You'll probably get your best responses over at Discord's City of Base Builders.
