Advice on fire/shield build

I recently rediscovered the game and set out to recreate one of my favorite characters from live.  He was originally a Fire/SR scrapper since it was one of the few scrapper builds that could solo AVs at the time.  In recreating him, I decided to go fire/shield to take advantage of the changes in the game since I originally built him.  My goal was the same as he had previously, perma-hasten and softcapped to all 3 positions.  I figured out a way to do it, but it's pretty rough.  I used 5 recharge IOs in hasten to get the recharge time down, and I'm having to run weave to get to the softcap.  I'm guessing I'll have pretty major END problems, and I haven't run the numbers yet to see if cycling Conserve Power will leave me sustainable or not.

 

Looking for any advice/improvements you all can offer.

I gave it a whack and the best I can offer is an alternate build.  First, the bad news: You're not going to have perma-Hasten.

 

Second, me trying to soften the blow of the bad news: Greater Fire Sword recharges in five seconds and has a critical hit bonus.  Plus Shield Defense doesn't really benefit from recharge all that much since One with the Shield isn't affected by recharge.  Granted, you also have Shield Charge which is, but if you were that dead-set on spamming teleport smashes you'd be playing an Elec/Shield.

 

Now the good news: You have softcapped positional defenses.  I was nearly hamstrung until I looked into it and found that while Phalanx Fighting gives you a defense bonus for nearby teammates, it also gives you an unenhanceable bonus just by having it active, which is enough to push you over the cap.  The build should be, if not perfect, then at least functional if you exemplar down, and everything is more or less in a usable state; nothing is a stat stick.  Plus there's no purples and only one PvP IO.

 

Finally, neutral news: Grant Cover is in there and it gives people about 13% defense.  Many people do try to softcap defense, but in the instances where they can't make it or focus on other things, well, it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it, right?

Hmm, definitely a lot cheaper build than the one that I put together, and fits in more powers from shield.  But it gives up a lot of recharge to get there.  Hasten is down for about 25 seconds at a time.  And without physical perfection it looks like it might have even more end problems than the build I posted.

Here's my fire/shield build. It can run the single target attack chain indefinitely. Hasten has 9 second downtime, but that's not a big deal. I also took Mu for more AOE. You will burn through endurance AOE, but you can always use that serum temp power.

What's your ST attack chain?  GFS > Incinerate > Cremate?  Does that still work even when hasten is down?

 

Kind of surprised that's sustainable END-wise, I remember that attack chain being a real END hog, but if it is kudos.

Yes. It has a short gap (.686 seconds) while hasten is down, but 9 seconds of downtime isn't a big deal there.

 

Fire is not very intense on end.

 

The build has 3.72 end per use from Incinerate, 5.38 from Cremate, and 8.01 from GFS. That's a total of 17.11 end over a cast time of 6.072 seconds with Aracanatime factored in.

 

So, ~2.82 end/sec from the attack chain. The build uses 1.19/sec in toggles giving you a total drain of 4.01end/sec. Panacea and Performance shifter procs are worth .6875 end/sec with Atlas Medallion and Portal Jockey (I usually count these because they are so easy to get - although in this case I think you may be okay without them too) giving the build a total recovery of 4.09 end/sec. Should be good to go. The end discount bonuses on some of the new sets (in this build 5 piece Reactive Defenses) should not be overlooked.

 

Sure, you can solve the end problem with ageless destiny, but I had enough recharge and this lets me take Rebirth Radial for healing and regen which is something shield lacks.

I think my old Fire/Shield was soft-capped with a few seconds from perma Hasten. But the build I have in Mids is clearly outdated and not worth posting - it has Enzymes in some defensive powers. It was also halfway a concept build - all fire sword attacks in melee, and so I was always spamming an AoE whether I needed it or not. And I think using only fire swords was the main reason I needed perma Hasten. OK, not very helpful information. I guess I'm just chatty this evening. <waves hello>
