Wasn't XP and 2k basically on the same codebase only 2k wasn't as game compatible? It's been a while since I've been OS info-diving.

IIRC, Windows XP was an outgrowth/evolution of Windows 95/98, while Windows 2000 was more based upon Windows NT.

Windows ME (the OS from Hell), was the outgrowth/evolution of Windows 95/98.  Windows 2000 was basically the same codebase as Windows XP, but with a polished version of the Windows 95/98/98SE UI.  It was actually just as game compatible as Windows XP, but most games didn't officially support it as it was technically a business OS.  However, games ran on it just fine.  I played City of Heroes on Windows 2000 Professional from 2005 through 2008 even though it didn't officially support it.
