  1. I can't believe we are still discusing Defense softcap for Doms. Come on guys! You can have both things: permadom and softcap.

Those numbers with 9% /6% defense... Is just suicidal. I wouldnt build a Dominator with those values at all.

Some people loves medicine pool and it's cool if you handle not being interrupted. I would rather go always with Tough and Weave + Scorpion Shield or Frozen Armor.

Dominators are not a tank but depending your power choices and playstyle you need to think where you will be standing when fights begins. For example: My Mind/Dark Dominator have  Ranged attacks mostly. So S/L defense softcap is not a priority but Ranged is.

Totally different with my Dark/Rad Dom. He stands besides Tanks and it's a melee attacker. All defense you can get is important.

People here in this forum is divided by Defense or not dominators. I'm in favor of Defense and always end these topics with the same argument: You can have all the recharge bonusses you want but that would not save you of being hitted and killed. Defense softcap will save you.

I should have a build in Mids for Grav/Energy. I will post it later.

  2. /Energy or /Rad probably most melee feeling sets for doms. I do have a Dark Rad and PBAoE melee feels great when going to melee.

Energy with bone smasher and Total Focus probably the closest set to feel like a blaster.

Check both you can't go wrong with these

Am I the only dominator that loves Spore Burst.  I know it's only a sleep, but it's tied with Mass Hypnosis as the longest-lasting AOE control with the shortest recharge..  MH has 10' more range but takes longer to activate,

Is about playstyle. If you play in teams is kind of useless, but soloing yes it's ok if you use it as you described. The only reason for me to taking it would be for running LRSF. But on these days teams are all about rushing in and smash.

I don't have room for Spore Burst in my build and with seeds and AoE hold coming fast + Inmob honestly i don't need it.

Different thing is with my Mind dominator... Sleep is a must and fill a little hole between holds and confuse.

I've been tryin to plan out a Plant/Martial and I dropped Caltrops for SS, totally don't know if its worth it.

Would you mind taking a look at my build?

I just checked your build here a few things. It´s expensive no questions, if you have the inf thats ok. You will not regret to invest that much inf in this dominator.

Permahasten great! Stamina 1 slot... umm thats risky but cuold be "fixed" between your massive +rech and incarnate power selection later.

About power selection checking what you choosen you are planning going ranged mostly. Plant powers selection is accurate (entangle, sporburst and spirit tree are skippable for me as well). Regarding MA you skipped almost all melee attacks. Well thats up to your personal playstyle... i do like going melee so i chosen almost all melee attack being the less used Dragons Tail (poor damage imho). Talking about caltrops and this is controversial sometimes i just chose it cause is a good damage mitigation making NPCS running away as soon you drop it. I use caltrops 1 slot with  a -res proc. Still skippable for some people and thats fine.

Going to your total numbers (and here some disagreement with your build): Defense S/L 38.4% - Melee /AoE 18.7% - Ranged 21.2% . If you ask me those numbers are way down to softcap. Target for softcap is 40%+. I tend to build my doms reaching S/L and Ranged over 40%. So with this in mind here are my questions and were i find a contradiction: As i said you are planning to go ranged attack (by your power selection) so... why are you not softcapping at least Ranged Def?

With all the inf you are willing to put down i would at least take care of softcap ranged. Some friends in this forum will tell you to not worry about DEF but standing toe by toe in AV fights besides Tanks and Brutes... thats the spot were you want to be as a Dominator and thats why we have melee attacks in our powersets.

For finishing i dont like to just critique. So here im sharing the build im running in my Plant/MA. Maybe you could improve it and adapt it to your own playstyle.

  5. I have Elec/Elec and for me the only reason to have end mods IOs in Conductive Aura was to keep NPCs drained not to have +End for me. It doesnt make a huge difference for your own end. Electric should be one of the powersets more end heavy than the rest.

I run with 1 miracle in health 1 perf shifter + chance + perf shifter end mods + 1 end mod IO in stamina. Still my end bar was going empty quick.

Best fix for this was reach Incarnate level.

Not sure why you brought up rech here. My point was if you're going to go def soft cap, would be better to go for melee than range. If you jump in the middle on the mob their alpha strike is going to be focused melee not ranged.

I don't jump in middle of the mob until is cotrolled. No one does i believe.

Achieving Melee Def will make you sacrifice permadom... So no point to try.

  7. 12 minutes ago, mbre2006 said:

A few stragglers is really nothing to worry about if they run away from you and engage in range attacks. As a melee'er you are literally running in to absorb the alpha strike(Like tanks and brutes do), beyond that I mean again you would be better focusing on melee. Range attacks have s/l components as well. So again I'm just not seeing the point of having high defense in range but much lower in melee where you would be spending most of your time in melee range.

As far as Ice Control defense capabilities you can also slot confuse sets in AA which can contribute more to your survivability.

I'm not trying to sell anything here. Def or not Def... Is up to personal experience and personal playstyle.

By experience i can say this: Permahasten or all the +Rech you can get will not save you when missing bosses or 3/4 NPCs.

People in general when play a Dominator tend to slot all the purples can get hipnotized for Rech bonusses. It's fine with me if you have the inf and have your fun rolling like that.

Thats not my case. I believe in balance. And by balance getting all the Def and survivality i can get after permadom is the way to go.

You can try both ways like i did and find your own way to go.

As i said if you have a build that you think would be better for you feel free to share it. Thats why we are here... To share our stuff and learn

I just curious as to what benefit does it have in melee as opposed to trying to soft cap melee defense?

Is a good point. But i believe that S/L softcap covers great percentage when you go in melee.

    As Coyote said:

I imagine his situation is the same: taking more damage from ranged attacks because melee-ranged enemies are debuffed or controlled.

This round it up why ranged is a good choice to seek for in your builds.

So help me out here. Why are you trying to soft range defense if you're going to be in melee range?

NPCs will not be hold always all the time. I will miss a few for sure and if those are not Melee based attacks i'll be hit for sure.

My question is then: Why not softcap Ranged if you can do it without gimping your powersets selection/IOs slotting?

Do you think my build will fail or underperform compared to other without Def softcap?

You already seen my Plant Dominator in action. This Ice/Earth is following same build principle.

Of course if you have a suggestion or a better build to check i would like to see it.

What's the recharge on that? Is Perma-Dom something you're concerned about?

Rech is 87.5% permadom. I always aim for +90% but with this combo is more complicated cause i don't want to go under Def softcap numbers.

I'll start with this Dom next week and see how it works. GL with yours.

  12. Im posting a build that achieved all goals we talked about above: Permadom + Def Softcap S/L and Ranged. This build is purple free low/middle budget.

To clarify i never ever played gravity so i dont know if my power choices are OK or the best picks.

Take this build as an example and im sure people with more experience in Grav could improve it.

You don't need to be defence capped to be a formidable adversary.  Equally though, having sufficient def/res to let perma dom sing is prudent, a platform to perform without getting sucker punched with the 'one shot' that gets through.

Im not sure why choosing perma dom and capped def is being argued as if you cant have both.

135% rech is overkill... perma hasten and perma dom with 110% rech and still have capped ranged/s/l/e on my dom.

    You.Can.Have.Both.

100% agree with this. I don't even have permahasten on all my Doms but i do have 44%+ Def S/L and Ranged (sorry 30% is not enough). 90% rech is good enough. My builds are purple free budget friendly.

If you think "Oh i'm permadom and i'll hold/ Sleep/Confuse everything all the time, no one will ever hit me" then you are wrong.

If you want a sample here is a small example. Two Plant Dominators same level running  big npcs mobs. Thorn Dominator is not Def softcapped. MA is softcapped.

Look how many times Thorn got hitted and had to pop inspirations.

Plant Dominator number two. Martial Arts softcapped no permahasten.

See the difference? MA Dominator never popped a insp... It got shooted a few times running three groups.

I'm not saying that not going Def cap will make you a bad Dominator. My point is: there is an optimal build that can give You all the tools for surviving and do your domination stuff solo 54 x 8 or teams or AV, etc.

The optimal build for a Dominator is not the one with more rech... Is the most balanced.

I would love to see this in action. Do you have any I can witness in action?

Just a small video sample.... sorry about quality. 53 x 6 Councils.

    Enjoy!

I would never skip an aoe hold even at lower levels. If anything it can act as a panic button and at early levels you only need two acc IOs until you're ready to start building,

I second this. AoE holds/Stuns/Inmob... Thats your job as a Dominator. I tend to not skip any of those even solo. To have all those tools at your disposition will open the door to run bigger mobs and get more XP/inf all the time.

In some sets AoE inmobs/Sleep are debatable to take. Is up to you and what You will be doing with your toon.

If im running a team the only reason to invite a Dominator is for AoE holds/Fear/Stuns etc. Damage mitigation for all the team.

PVE wise Mind/Psi is going to be the only thing you're gonna get to true aoe wreckage with a dom (IMO). You can proc the hell out of Mind/PSI and frakenslot it with mezz and damage. You might end up sacrificing a few things here and there but it's definitely doable. And as long as you achieve permadom, you greatly increase your survivability.

I must disagree with this. Best AoE primary in my opinion is Plant. Besides good control it brings great dps from carrion creepers + roots. Sorry but Mind primary lacks of dps compares to Plant or Fire.

So if you pair Plant or  Fire with Psy it will out dps Mind for far.

I do have 4 doms (my main Mind/Dark) and my Plant/Ma is a Dps monster comparing with the rest.

There was a reason why people choosen Plant or Fire for farming in the past.

  17. Since CoV release i just played Redside. All my toons were villians and still are. I think only got 2 lvl 50 heroes before shutdown.

For me Redside always being more challenging, storyarcs more polished and entertaining.

Why no so many people playing Redside? Easy answer: when devs gave access to villians AT to blueside they just killed CoV.

I can't undestand why a AT called Stalker, Brute etc can be a hero. Makes no sense to me.

  18. As promised here my current build. I checked the other build above and it works good if you have the inf. Those purples will cost you a lot.

My build is inf friendly got more +rech and +ranged def.

You cant go wrong with any of these builds

  19. Hi! I'm at work atm and don't have mids here. What i can tell watching your powerset picks is that you probably are not defense softcapped so your survivality (disregarding permadom or not) is compromised if you facing +3/4 npcs, EB, AV etc.

You should consider drop Psy Mastery and get Mace Mastery picking Scorpion Shield.

In order to work softacapping defense you need Weave/Scorpion Shield/Maneuvers/Combate Jumping.

I will share my Mind/Dark Dom build later today so you can check it and have an idea what i'm talking about.

I'm a soloer mostly and can run any content +3/4 without any issues.

Without a deep review in your build i bet you should be faceplanting often. You need to work towards defense (i softacp ranged def 40%+ always) otherwise npcs will hit you all the time and worst in larger teams or groups.

  20. I just comeout with this build. I know can be improved with some purples but i dont want to be crazy expensive. Open to some ideas if you want to chip in.
