I have ran both.  SR feels stronger in those debuff situations.  Mind you, I like Ninjitsu, but I know when I ran ITF I felt SR to be the better set.  But I don't believe I had max S/L Resist going on...maybe more like 60.

I am not sure what contortions one would have to pull to push to 75%. It is not that much more but I note on my War Mace/Ninjitsu scrapper his currently planned S/L resistances reach 61% as I was more focused on getting his defenses into the 50s and perma-Hasten.

  2. 1 minute ago, Blackjoy said:

That I would be resting more as a scrapper due to Endurance or Health.  The faster I can kill mobs, the less damage I take and the less endurance I use up.  Be the 40's, Brutes can get enough defense to not rest.  But if you're fighting +2/+3s, you're taking damage and having to rest, and that lowers your Fury and makes you less effective on the next spawn.

The sets do not play the same below 50+.  As you approach 50, it becomes more about your build than the set.

A low level Brute will do more damage than a Scrapper and hence rest less because they get 2% more damage per point of Fury and build to a roughly functional cap of 85 fury, for a total of 170% more damage.

Energy Punch for a Scrapper deals 79.83 base, and 48.38 base for a Brute. Stick in damage enhancements to get to +95% damage and the Scrapper is at 79.83*1.95=155.67 damage. Likewise the Brute can slot the same but also is going to get another 170% to his damage via Fury for a total of 265%. That puts him at 48.38*3.65=176.57. Factor in crits and the scrapper get 10% more to be at 171.237. That is still behind the Brute.

The Brute is not going to be able to stay at 85 Fury indefinitely but he has equivalent defenses and more hp, meaning he by default can spend more time being beaten on than the Scrapper. So long as you are not killing 3 things then resting, rinse repeat but rather progressing until it becomes unhealthy to continue on, the Brute will kill more. Perhaps not a lot, but more.

So again, if you were resting all the time with the Brute, you would be resting all the time and then some with the Scrapper.

And all the blather about approaching 50 is aside as we are discussing your comment about 1-35 play.

    No, that's not true.

Let's look again what Aetheral said...

A Scrapper does better much better upfront damage compared to a Brute.   And when a Brute is resting "mostly due to health concerns" their Fury isn't up.  That means a Brute is going to burn more endurance than a Scrapper in defeating mobs.  So no, there is a substantive difference playing Brute vs Scrapper when you're having to rest for Health, and that's exactly what I had to do playing /Shield.   Again, I'm playing these sets with IO's and no Tough/Weave so I can see what the set can do, not what my build can do.

That was aetheral addressing a Regen build. You cut off this first sentence in the paragraph:

    Quote

I actually played an Energy Melee/Regen brute, just recently.  I was resting all the time with it.

My response to you was about what you were addressing, Street Justice/Shield on a  Brute--"I played a Street/Shield Brute and Shield was terrible 1-35.  I was constantly low on health and low on endurance."

    So, what is not true?

You are missing some AT distinctions, like ATOs and, um, this beauty of an epic power:

    https://cod.uberguy.net/html/power.html?power=epic.brute_soul_mastery.darkest_night&at=brute

I said before IOs got factored in and you're not going to have Darkest Night at any point between levels 1 and 35.

Edit: The thing I do not like about the power is that because it radiates from what you drop it on, things at range are not affected. Great solo though, especially when using corners to herd. But in a group your anchor is at risk of being killed (though in a group you probably don't care). Build a Rad Tanker who used it to wonderful effect.

The only difference defensively between a brute and a scrapper before IO sets get factored is the brute has higher hit points. Otherwise, the powers give the same amount of defense and resistance. Endurance recovery works identically. If you were resting all the time on a brute then you would have been resting all the time on a scrapper. Probably moreso on the scrapper because the brute, having gotten fury up, should be doing more damage going from spawn to spawn.

True, but the lack of good DDR still hurts.  Tho, now I'm wondering if I could get a Ninjitsu user to capped S/L Resist.

Defense debuffs have to land in the first place, but yes, once they start landing Ninjitsu will lose defense faster than SR will. But SR will presumably be taking more damage and not have a heal up its sleeve.

If I were not so lazy (well, wrapped up in planing stupid  Dominator tricks)  it might be worth modelling.

I basically just took a bunch of stuff you'd see on metal album art (skulls, chains, fire, demons, etc.) and combined them into one guy. The corpse paint makes it kind of hard to see the skull's metallic shine - I probably should have gone a couple shades darker, but oh well. The power customization is from an old, shelved attempt to make a metal manipulator (couldn't come up with a proper character concept) - this variant was a Seismic/Bio Sentinel. Not sure it fits your concept, but tossed it in anyway.

    Pure awesome!

Ninjitsu lacks enough DDR, that I feel SR pulls ahead, even with Ninjitsu having the heal.  However, the +END Heal of Ninjitsu is nice.

Ninjitsu has Resistance to all damage types too via Bo Ryaku. Not at an incredible value but it is there and helps in pushing towards resistance cap (to S/L at least).

I semi-recently lucked into the name Metalhead(!!!) on Excelsior thanks to the server's Name release thread. Ever since then I've been trying to figure out what to do with it -- designing and redesigning, trying different powersets and ATs, then deleting and starting over. Currently he's a level 7 Sonic/Invuln sentinel, but that's at least the tenth iteration of the character so far. I've got a look that sort of works, but... eh. "Metallic guy in leather jacket," how clever. So I throw myself upon the mercy of the Costume Request Thread. I'm sure someone here (or a combination of someones) can help me come up with something better than this big ol' pile of generic.

At this point I'm not married to anything; gender, powers/AT, or any aspects of the design at all. I just want something, you know... \m/ METAL \m/. Go nuts, folks, I'll figure out the rest once I have a look that isn't more boring than a bass solo.

I would kind of expect a character named Metalhead to have a metal head...and just a metal head. 😛

Now not saying it is a good idea but then, War Mace/Ninjitsu has turned out to be a blast, so why not go all the absurd way to Titan Weapon/Ninjitsu on a scrapper?

It's weird to act like Regen has some kind of great endurance management that's a big advantage.  That was once the case, but it hasn't been true for a long time.

I've had to slot Gamma Boost with End Mod and I still run out of endurance in boss fights.    /Regen wastes the least amount endurance on mitigation.

Radiation Armor's endurance management tool is Theft of Essence proc in Radiation Therapy. 😛

Thats a quite expensive one, but you are right, budget it not my biggest issue 🙂 Thank you for taking the time to not only give some advice but also create a meaningful build !

Why are there 5 powers without any enhancement? Are they not worth any?

You can put what you want in them.  Certainly you probably want to reduce the endurance cost on Focused Accuracy.

As for cost, you can replace the slotting of Winter sets as follows until you have the influence for them:

    • Devastating Blow: Shield Breaker (2/3/5/6) + 2 basic damage IOs
    • Laser Beam Eyes: Shield Breaker  (2/3/5/6) + 2 basic damage IOs
    • Icicles: Mocking Beratement

You will lose 5% S/L/E/N Def and 9% F/C Def. For most game content you will not notice the first and the impact of the second will be minimal.

No, i am not farming at all.. It just was the only build i found in the forum,.

I would really appreciate your ideas 🙂

Sorry, the day got busy and got to this late.

What follows is not God's gift to brute builds but it is hopefully a useful first pass. Issues it has are:

    • Gap between endurance consumption and recovery is low so relies on Performance Shifter procs and Energy Absorption. Agility Core Paragon is probably the only sane Alpha choice.
    • Hoarfrost does not recycle in 120s or less
    • Would like an extra slot in both Frozen Armor and Tough for 6.75% more S/L Resistance
    • Global Recharge could be higher.
    • Relies on 3 Winter sets (though may not be an issue for you depending on budge).

You can tweak slots around to reach different goals. As always, I suggest testing a build on the test server before committing to it.

Also, any melee secondary where the entirety of the mez protection is A) entirely contained within a single toggle and B) tied to the passive PBAoE taunt. Looking at you, Energy Aura. Especially considering /EA also has a baked-in stealth power. Having to deactivate my taunt aura to sneak around? Fine, that makes sense. Having to also remove all of my secondary's mez protection to do so? Seems pretty counterintuitive. Frankly, taunt auras being intrinsically tied to other powers and not their own separate toggle seems like a synergistic issue in-general.

Are scrappers and brute prone to sneaking around?

Besides, if you are sneaking, you shouldn't need mez protection. 😛

Which my response would be "in the last week? So what? Why would that even be a metric to determine anything?"  For instance, i've got a SG that only meets once a week, for instance, which has a couple of characters in it. if we have people sick, or it's a holiday (or series, say, Christmas and New Years) we may not meet for a week or two. This is a game, not a job. My "Unplayed" (by this metric) and "under-leveled" (I should have no requirement to hit 50 in some timeframe, thanks) on my *active* accounts are my business.

Now, if the comment were about "accounts that haven't logged in in the last six months," for instance, that would be a different discussion. But "these characters haven't been touched in a week!" ... again, so what?

Yeah, just logged into a brute I got to 50 last Sunday for the first time in a week. I had other characters I was focusing on and got back to him today.

On red side I have a number of characters I play with on the group of friends I have who play red side exclusively. They have far less time to play than I do so any of the characters there may not get logged into for weeks at a time and that is with them playing every other to every third night.

And yet there is page after page after page of discussions just here in the forums with dozens of people hating the policy because they have hundreds of characters they can't possibly play frequently enough to avoid getting the name released. And these are just the ones who come to the forums and post.

    • You do not have to play. You have to login.
    • The frequency of necessary login to maintain name lock decreases with the level band of the character.

    Of my 96 characters:

    • 19 are 50 so their names are not coming available period.
    • Roughly a dozen more are characters I currently intend to play going forward.

That leaves 60ish characters whose names are up for grabs. Logging out will not take more than 20s. Add in load time when logging in and being generous with the estimate you are looking at no more than 60 seconds to login and reset a character for the duration of the level/name release band they are in. So perhaps an hour of my time were I to want to do that. But no reason to do it all in one sitting. At no more than 10 minutes of time per day, all the characters could be safeguarded in under a week.

Mind you, I am not going to do that. There are perhaps a half-dozen names total out of the 60 which I might be inclined to try to hold onto and truthfully, I am unlikely to make much effort for them let alone the rest. But were someone inclined it is not massive effort.

Granted, were someone trying to hold 500-600 character names they would have to put in 5-6 times the effort but still doable and with low time investment unless one is trying to hold onto names of sub-level 10 characters.

  16. Proton Sweep is barely tolerable on a Tanker because of the increased area. Feel free to drop it on a Brute. And it's filled with Mocking Beratement? (Not that it gets hurt overly much that way.)

Do take Radiation Siphon. OMG, take Radiation Siphon. Why is Radiation Siphon not in the build? It is your heal.

Is the goal to be a Tanker? Damage does not seem to be the build's raisons d'être. Sure, Irradiated Ground is proc bombed to hell and back.... Hey, is this meant to be an afk farmer?

If it weren't 1:00am I might try to put something together. Maybe tomorrow morning depending on my mood.

  18. If you are not going to have melee, then ATs with a combination of control and healing. Masterminds can definitely fit both of those requisites (filling in tanking via pets).  I would probably suggest Corruptor + Mastermind because you get overlap in control and healing with the proper choices (triple overlap on control with the right choice of blast set on the Corruptor).
