Time/Fire with Power Mastery as your APP is an incredible combo if built right. Softcapped defenses, capped resistance to S/L damage, respectable damage output, and lot's of utility for both solo and group play. It's really one of my favorite Defender combos.

Any chance we can see your build?

I’ve been trying to work out a character that can do it all (DPS, Solo, Team, Buff, DeBuff). While keeping it at ranged, because I’m not a fan of melee in teams.

Leaning towards Time/Fire as being the answer (Maybe Time/Ice?). I was also leaning towards Corruptor because more damage is more fun (for me anyways 😛 ). But I haven’t tried a Defender since I had a Empathy/Energy in the days before we had capes... I hear they got a lot better.

It sounds like you could use a little Madness in your life. 😉

    Could be right!

I’ve always enjoyed energy. But I thought it was only fun when the damage was still high on a Blaster.

If procs can make it have comparable damage on a Corruptor/Defender, we may have a winner!

I was thinking Ice/Time or Fire/Time, but this definitely adds another dimension...

If I was to make a "building corruptors guide" would there be enough interest to warrant the effort?

Would you guys find something like that beneficial?

I spent yesterday scouring the forum looking for advice.

    A guide would be great!

I have both time/ defender and /time corrupter at lvl 50 fully incarnated and IOed, and I can tell you its actually even easier at 50 than before once you are set IO slotted.

A good build and IO setup will give you softcap to all def positions (45%) once power boost or clarion is applied to farsight pre cast.

That means you can tank all you want, solo or in teams as you are self contained in def buffing, just refresh your powerboosted/clarion farsight before the buff wears off- which is easy since farsight is a 2 min buff and clarion is a 2 min timer. No need for additional players to provide maneuvers, no need for anything outside of your own build and slotting. You just need powerboost from a epic set, or clarion from your destiny incarnate.

Its really one of the best buffs in game.

    Which do you like better?

I’m thinking of playing a /Time, but need to decide between a defender or corruptor. Looking for something good at everything teaming and soloing (tall ask I know!)

Defenders are, IMO, the most versatile AT.  I can build one defender to be tougher than tanks and have equal to greater damage than that tank (But I don't taunt as well).  I can build another to rival scapper's damage (The scrapper can have better focused damage to cut through the middle of a pile, but much less AoE, and little to no debuff for hard targets).   I can build many that push into the blaster spectrum of damage, and have better survivability than blasters (blasters have better alpha burst, but not long term sustained damage).   The only thing really holding back defenders are the AT caps.  There's just very little I can do about the damage cap and resist cap.  That skews builds toward defense, which means you have to counter DDR, but that's not an impossible thing to do.  And it skews you to defender damage caps which limits your burst damage, but when you can sustain that cap longer, your overall long term sustained damage can be greater.  Depending on exactly which sets, builds , teams, and targets, sometimes a corruptor is better; but by and large the greater flexibility of the defender build usually ends up better.

I probably play my main blaster more than my defender or any other build, but I also wholly acknowledge that the defender is overall the more powerful build, only slightly less durable than the tank, and only slightly less damage than the blaster.  The defender however, does take a lot more player resources and in-game resources, the blaster, scrapper, and tank are much easier, simpler, and cheaper to drive.

    This is very encouraging!

I’ve been searching since way back when CoH launched for one character that can do it all. I hate having alts in games, and I keep trying for that magic combo.

I had thought I’d found it with a Mind/Energy Dominator, but he really suffers with some content solo.

I also have an Eng/Eng blaster that I thought was close. I hated having to time Hasten and perma domination on the dominator, so I made him mostly toggles instead of clicks. He’s got great defence, survivability, and damage.... But boring to cycle through the same attack chain.

Recently tried a scrapper (had a lot of melee on live), but boy do I hate melee in this game. Be it annoying dog piles or enemies being a little too far away.

I was hopeful of find that one character as a defender or corruptor. Maybe a controller? On live they were painfully slow, but maybe now with procs?

How much recharge do you have? Can you get Mass confusion anywhere near Seeds of confusion? I've always thought it odd that plant is  better than mind control at confuse effects...

I'm not sure how often Seeds of Confusion is up for you, but I find Mass Hypnotize up often enough. Not being a cone makes it easier to use too.

When it isn't up, Mass Confusion is another good option. Total Domination is also good in the rare case the other two aren't up.

And I also use Terrify a lot. It's a cone, but does good damage and offers a lot of control.

My Recharge is at: 178.75% (including Perma-Hasten)

Mas Hypnotize recharges in: 12.75s (starts at 45s)

Mass Confusion recharges in: 63.81s (starts at 240s)

Total Domination recharges in: 63.89s (starts at 240s)

Terrify recharges in: 12.83s (starts at 40s)

Because of all the options and most are AoEs instead of cones, I personally think Mind Control is better at sleeps and confuses. BUT, I haven't put nearly as much time into plant, and I know a lot of people love plant.

  7. Like others have said it really depends..

Personally, I just started a toon with 100 000 000 farmed with another character.

I ran death from bellow to level 20. Then bought the attuned Stamina and Heath slots I had in my build. As well as crafted IOs for everything else.

Then I started going through all the Auroboros missions from the begging. I’m using merits to buy more attuned enhancements as I level into them. I’m also making money and gaining levels as I go.

I really like this method. You get to enjoy all the best content. The initial investment is low at 100 000 000. It’s also enough that you can buy some extras like the 5000 inf jet pack.

The end build will be a lot more than 100 000 000. Especially because of what I’m buying with merits. But you kind of gain the rest naturally as you go through the missions. It doesn’t feel ‘grindy at all’

I just hit level 35 with this method. I’m probably going to stick to it. But there is also the option of doing MSRs for more merits.

  8. 1) Between adding defence with sets and all the control we have, I don’t think healing is needed at all. A few inspiration is plenty.

    2) I respected Mesmerize back in. It’s useful all the way up to 50 for stacking sleeps. It can make bosses and some AVs MUCH easier.
    3) It really depends on what sets you’re going for.
I’d say my ‘must have’ powers are:

Mass Confusion (Coercive Persuasion with the Contagious Confusion proc is amazing here).

Mass Hypnosis (for when Mass Confusion is down).

       Terrify (slotted for damage).

       Sniper Blast (single target rotation)

       Power Bust (single target rotation)

Dominate (single target rotation, slotted for damage)

       Mesmerize (general control)

I think everything else is optional on how you want to build it. Or what you want as slot mules.

    4) Personally I liked Energy for concept and the AoEs. Explosive Blast and Energy Torrent help make this build solid for AoEs.

    • Thanks 1
  9. Mass Hypnosis and Terrorize for damage is a great combo.

I’ve also used Mass Hypnosis to prevent a team wipe when we agro too much.

It’s also nice to run past mobs you don’t want to fight.

I usually alternate between it and Mass Confusion.

Thematically Devices fits well, but either will work.  I haven't yet played /Devices (or AR) since live so not sure how the changes will effect it. I know I did enjoy the static group with friends, all AR/Devices was a blast.  First time we got to use Full Auto was a large outdoor Council map we surrounded them and opened up .  Not  quite the chaos of pulling entire multi-tiered rooms into literal mine fields but very satisfying.

    This sounds amazing!

  11. Also, wondering if it's worth forgoing some of the defense and recharge, and going full proc monster?

Never tried anything like that before.

  12. Hello Everyone,

I'm looking at rebuilding my old main. So, not worried about spending money.

My gold is a guy I can solo with or team.

I figure the way to get there was with lots of recharge, and ranged/AoE defense (Ranged Defense is still coming up short of cap).

I'm not sure about Maneuvers. I had Combat Jumping there. I prefer the mobility, but I don't think I can use it at the same time as Hover (Maybe I'm wrong here?)

Because I was already taking Hasten, I took Super Speed and slotted it with Celerity. That way I can still stealth missions, and set up my Nova.

Knockback to Knockdown on Explosive Blast and Nova to keep them team friendly.

I put the recharge proc in common single targets to see if I can fish for it (Never used this before, but looked interesting!).

I'd love to have a 6th slot for torrent for either a Recharge Proc, or Knockback to Knockdown (Though I think one AoE Knockback could prove useful). No idea where to take it from though.

Would appreciate any tweaks you see to make it better!

Oh, almost forgot the biggest tip I can give you: use Domination. Don't sit on it. Don't save it for an emergency. Pop that sucker like bubble wrap whenever it's up. It's awesome, and not using it is a waste of your potential.

    Agreed!

I usually keep mine on Auto. (Even long before it's perma)

  14. Anyone know the Macro for melee attacks that follows your target first?

I figure I'd replace all my melee attacks with Macros instead.

I'm sure I saw someone mention it before, but I can't find it...

I've been sticking to range characters because of how annoying it is to be slightly out of range for your attack to go off. Thought this might make it much better!

IMO Mass Hypnosis is too good a power to pass up even if you rarely use it. There are a lot of irritating maps that are made easier to solo if you sleep adjacent spawns. If you don't like the power you can always one slot it and with enough global recharge it will still be decent. If nothing else it's a fail safe for moments when Mass Confuse is recharging and you start to get overwhelmed or get ambushed.

    I agree,

I wouldn't want to go without Mass Hypnosis.

I see it as a great bailout power. If your team pulls too many. Or if everyone straight up dies, it can get you out of trouble.

As long as you talk to your team ahead of time, it can also be used for very selective pulling.

It's not a must have for me. But it's a really nice to have.

  16. I don't think anything above is wrong...

EXCEPT: Use it if you want.

It's still good enough, and contributes well to a team.

I've seen first hand back on live (before Devices buff, well before Blaster buffs).

A Electric/Devices blaster played well can be very devastating.

Play whatever you want, I can't think of a set that is so bad you can't play the game well.

  17. Pretty sure I saw a good one in the "guide" section.

    Energy/Energy is great!

Especially if you learn to use the knockback well. I think Fly/hover is a must to change the angles.

There is also a very good guide on Energy/Energy in the Sentinel section.

As has been said, purples are your friend with EBs, since your primary damage mitigation method is not going to work against them very well. But figured i should add that you can save some insps, have a bit more room in your tray for reds/greens, if you go get the Archmage/Demonic accolade power. Demonic is (much) easier to get before 50, and you're redside anyway at the moment if you are doing the arc, and it  will convert into Archmage when/if you go blueside again. I know the hunt may be annoying, but you can get all the mobs you need for the CoT badge by cruising the forest in Cap au Diable killing Hordelings, it's way easier than the BP masks the Archmage badge needs (at least before 50ish). And the shield is 50% defense and 30% resistance to all damage types except Psi for 2 minutes. (for Psi, you need Vanguard) which will let you eat the alpha in safety, and hopefully either they will be dead, or the triangles will drop when it falls, or you can pop some purples then. It's totally worth it for EB fights. I've had the Demonic/Archmage badge since i was level 30 or so, and my character leveled solo with the content doing arcs, and that accolade was a lifesaver with EBs

and Doms are very soloable, (I usually do +1/x4 or x5 with my dom, even before i hit 50, could probably go higher but that's the sweet spot between cakewalk and challenging for me)  it's just EBs can be a bit of a problem due to triangles negating your best defense. but if you want a character that can take anything the game throws at them solo, a Brute is probably your best option, maybe a Mastermind with a good debuffing secondary like Dark, though going /Traps would allow you to solo AVs/GMs because -regen.

    This is great advice,

    Thank you!

Going to work on the accolade today. I think it will make a huge difference.

My trips to the hospital are always when my tray is empty. So giving it a bit more room would be a big help.

I'll also need to look more into accolades. I never really went for them. Even back on live.

That mission is the finale to Scirroco's second arc.  Unless you went straight to that arc via Oro, you should have already completed the first arc (when you fought Serafina) and have the patron powers already unlocked.

Scirocco's arc is IMO a tier ahead of all the other 3 for difficulty.  It's the one I choose when I feel I have a character looking for that kind of challenge.  It's the one I avoid if I don't.  That particular mission is even notable for Scirocco's arc, you could face Ice Mistral twice (she spawns both in a static mob placement and also as an ambush) and Scirocco himself is far from easy.

All this to say, fret not, you've reached the 1% of content that's actually hard.  With EBs, you should be able to handle that mission with one teammate.

What I'd do with an SOd character for this is bring t3 insps.  Maybe 8 purples and 8 t1 purple insps.  A t3 + t1 = 45% def.  This is to allow a 4 minute fight for each of Ice Mistral (you can skip her static mob) and Scirocco.  I honestly don't know if that's too much or too little, but it feels right.  Add 4 break frees (t1 is fine) and the rest t3 reds.  Don't engage either of the EBs until Dom is ready to fire.

A good insp loadout goes a loooong way to covering up deficiencies for a short while.

The conventional wisdom, for those just seeking the path of least resistance to open patrol pools, is to choose Black Scorpion.

    Thanks for this!

I didn't know I'm in the 2nd arch and already have access to the patron power pools.

I'll likely leave it for later and come back when I have better enhancements and maybe even with teammates.

It's good to know that this content is known to be hard. I was starting to think I just had a bad build for solo play. I played mostly on teams up to level 40.

My plan with Dominators was to have one AT to focus on and hopefully do all the content. Solo, team, farm, PvP.

Considering the challenges in these missions, I'm thinking maybe a Sentinal instead (or a Blaster?).

...I've been looking for this holly grail since issue 1 way back when.... I think it's probably a melee class. But I never enjoyed playing them..
