  1. Just dinged level 50 this weekend on my Shield / Savage Melee Tanker. Earth ancillary just for thematic reasons (as an Armadillo).

I'm all IO'd up, but deliberating over what Alpha Incarnate to slot. Would welcome any suggestions from folks with more experience!

I'm already soft-capped on positional, resistances are decent (although could still be higher...), and no endurance issues.

I'm leaning towards Musculature Core, but could also see cases for Nerve Radial or Resilient Core/Radial.

I find it's always best to opt for "inspired by" rather than "literally a recreation of." Not only is it safer from a copyright/generic-ing standpoint, it allows you to get creative and figure out what's going to look good in City of Heroes without worrying about whether any particular detail is "correct" or "accurate." Plus the whole point of a character-creation system in a game is is to use it to create your own character. Make a Claws/Regen scrapper with a shadowy past and an attitude problem, but don't try to actually make Wolverine. Make a spunky blonde teenager who's super-strong and hunts supernatural monsters, but don't worry about matching Buffy the Vampire Slayer exactly. In this case, "water-manipulating martial artist who uses her powers to replace the arms she lost" is a great starting point, but that's all it needs to be, and probably all it should be.

With all that said, here's what I was able to build on that foundation. I tried to take the general concept and fit it into the game's context of "modern American city where superheroes are totally a thing." There's still a definite Chinese flavor to the design, obviously, but I think it fits into Paragon City rather than feeling like it was plucked from some other universe. Maybe she's tied to the Tsoo somehow?

I used the Spectrum chest and gloves (plus the Slime aura) to try for a watery look on the arms, and I think I mostly achieved it. The main issue I ran into was that all of the robes we have sport a neckline that doesn't completely cover the upper torso, so the "water" showed through at the character's throat. I remedied that (to a point) with a mask even though Ming-Hua doesn't wear one, and added the Spiked Collar that's hidden under "shoulders" (never could figure that one out) which together almost do the job if I camouflage the collar by coloring it the same way as the robe. The way that the gap keeps disappearing and reappearing when she breathes bugs me in the character editor, but in-game is should look fine.

The neckline issue is actually what I was having, too--I tried the same thing you did here with the Spectrum arms (but you've pulled it off way better than I have).

Between the two of these I think I can get to something I am happy with. Also experimenting with dual blades/claws to see if I can make them look like water "spears". Thank you both 🙂

    Well. Armordillo was taken.

"Dr. Bailey's transmogrification experiment went a little awry (perhaps it was one margarita too many the night before...). Rather than modulating Tex Mex with a sensible spice level to make it palatable to the British palate, he accidentally fused himself with a curious armadillo onlooker nestled in the nearby window sill. Now, backed by Her Majesty's war chest, he's outfitted his little booboo with a few more high-tech gadgets. Armour up!"

Unfortunately, he would not find solace here, either, as he suffered traumatic abuse at the hands of his caregivers, gouging out his own eyes during an inebriated "spiritual journey" under the tutelage of one of the elder monks who assured Elijah it would only enhance his fighting prowess.  Well--that monk was right. It did. And now that monk is dead.  And Elijah, better known now as Austerity for his stoic and pristine persona, took to the streets to ensure the safety and protection of other foundlings so that none would endure what he had to."

  5. Omg this is the exact help I’ve been looking for 😭 (side note: I’m kind of surprised there’s not a costume subsection of these forums? Feel like I could get lost all day looking at people’s costume ideas!).

I am dying to play a Water/Kinetics Corruptor that I’m trying to model after Ming-Hua from The Legend of Korra.

Everything I’ve come up with is so bad I’m embarrassed to post it. Just can’t find a good way to try to recreate those water arms! Maybe I’m trying too hard to emulate her directly and need to settle for something loosely inspire by her.

Any creative costume gurus willing to take a stab at an idea or two? I’d be so grateful!

  6. Hey there,

I’ve been really enjoying badge hunting as of late (never got into it on live for some reason—I missed out apparently!).

Have started rounding out a lot of the PvE badge categories and am curious if there are any suggestions on how to more easily obtain PvP badges. I’m on Excelsior and the PvP zones and Arena are total dead zones.

Should I transfer to the PvP server (is it active enough?), hopefully snag the badges, and then transfer back? Seek out other PvP badge hunters to try to “exchange” milestones with?

    Any tips much appreciated!

That is absolutely nothing like what I am talking about....that is not even close to being a viable comparison. A better comparison would be, "They stopped making swings because not everyone likes swing sets. So now swings don't exist."

There is a huge difference between a playing asking for a minimal graphics option and forcing that minimal graphics on everybody.

If you can't understand that then all I can say is what I told Macskull....I'm not sorry...not even a little bit.

Oh you’re right! That is a better analogy. I forgot about the part where Cyberpunk 2077 agreed to “take the whole swing set down” I.e. just halt the game altogether so that no one could play.

Oh wait. That’s not what they’re doing at all. Not even close.

If you can’t understand how someone in a privileged majority is being selfish by arguing that a minority striving for accessibility or equity to enjoy something doesn’t deserve it, then you’re just doubling down on being a jerk. Congrats.

Except that isn't what is being done, otherwise I wouldn't be here posting this. You say my point of view is selfish. I think people who demand changes to a game that has an actual warning label on it that warns them from playing the game, are the ones being selfish when they demand that game's graphics be nerfed to be customized just for them. It's one thing to ask for an optional graphics change, it's another to downright demand a forced change for all.

I think one sounds more selfish than the other.

Their requests aren’t selfish; they’re pushing for inclusivity because it’s 2020, not 1920.

You’re coming across like someone who gets upset because a restaurant wants to add a wheelchair ramp for ease of access to more patrons. “Well! There were stairs before! Anyone with a wheelchair and eyes could have seen that plain as day! How selfish of WHEELCHAIR PEOPLE to DEMAND a ramp.”

The installation of the wheelchair ramp won’t hurt you nor your privileged legs that allow you to walk. I promise.

  9. Inclusivity doesn’t need to be a zero sum game. Folks who are privileged... I.e. who don’t have epilepsy, i.e. you in this instance... are doing themselves and folks without epilepsy a disservice by coming at it through a very selfish lens of “screw you, there are more of us without epilepsy, your asks don’t matter” instead of with some empathy. We have enough polarization in the world around us, we don’t need more in our escapes from it.

If a game can be built more inclusively, it should. It doesn’t hurt you if there’s a way to enhance optionality within graphic features or tone them down to broaden the accessibility for more people who don’t get to live as easily as you do, unencumbered by epilepsy.

And if someone with epilepsy is TRULY arguing to “nerf graphics for everyone” (which I highly doubt is their intent), be the bigger person and instead of feeling threatened + jumping to a doomsday scenario that they’re somehow clamoring to ruin your game (which is not your game, it should be for everyone, including people with epilepsy), propose a compromise, such as an inclusive settings toggle to tone down graphics that allow epileptic fans to play on that setting while you can continue along on whatever higher setting it is you like.

People with disabilities aren’t looking to ruin your good time. They’re trying to be a part of it. Don’t make it harder for them by gatekeeping, particularly when you haven’t had to endure their difficulties yourself.

  10. Understood this may be difficult to code, but it would be incredible to be able to have missing limbs, such as no arms, as well as amorphous limbs or anything evocative of tendrils, tentacles, etc.

I'm trying to create a character right now heavily inspired by "Ming-Hua" from The Legend of Korra.

Struggling to come up with an aesthetically-pleasing design that is also evocative of these types of "arms". If anyone has any suggestions within the existing costume editor options, outside of the net new additions I've proposed above, I'm all ears!

I'm a fan of Fire Breath, especially with Combat Teleport for lining it up.

ALso, I'm literally going to roll this exact build because it seems really fun!  I am also a big fan of Azula!

Combat Teleport has definitely been helpful for positioning! I find it better to just cue up Fire Breath and joust into the pack for the opener, but mid combat it’s great.

Build is super fun! Feel like it deviates a bit from some of the more popular Fire/X builds which keeps things interesting.

And glad you agree that Azula is 👸 Enjoy the new toon!

I'm firmly in the Fire Breath then Fire Ball camp.  I've never had a problem with targets moving too much, and that way the DoT from breath is simultaneous with ball.

  12. Sorry to necro this, but it seems to have all the info I’m looking for, rather than starting a brand new thread. Good stuff in here! @Bopper 😍

Insta-snipes were not a thing when I played on live. At the time, snipes were pretty polarizing—you either loved them or hated them. The analyses on them were a bit more subjective and highly contingent on play style, solo v teaming, etc. I personally didn’t care for them at the time.

But based on those DPA’s, they seem like an incredible addition to normal combat attack chains now as well as retaining their snipe utility. Unless I’m missing something, it almost seems insane to skip these for most classes with access. Is that fair to say?

If so, I may have some Mids Tetris to play and a respec to do 😅

For theme, isn't there an alt animation where you can change it to a hand animation?   Or am I thinking of something else?

Ooohhhh! I don’t think power animation customization had expanded beyond melee sets when I had played on live. Didn’t know this—this is great, thank you!

    57 minutes ago, DreadShinobi said:

It's actually alot better than most people give it credit for, but it depends on your playstyle. I also prefer it on my Poison/Fire defender, Fire/Cold Corr and Fire/Kin Corr over the usage it gets on my Fire/TA and Fire/Mental Blasters that have it (My Fire/Fire skipped it). Because Corrs/Defenders don't have a secondary full of attacks to fill out their attack chain which puts pressure on the long animation of Fire Breath that could be put to better use. With that said the power hits like a truck, as long as you're good at lining up the cone and/or jousting with the power, which is very easy to do. Fire Breath gets alot of hate for it's long animation but it actually has better DPA than Fire Sword Circle, Atom Smasher, Psychic Scream, Psychic Shockwave, and End of Time (post patch). It also gets a convenient +Range boost from the Superior Blaster's Wrath ATO, your Sniper attack, enhancement from Positron's Blast or Artillery, and potentially Intuition Radial if you opt into that. It is a much different attack now with all the access to +range compared to pre-ATOs, pre Snipe-range buff. Fire Ball>Fire Breath is a great AoE opener for whenever your Nuke is on cooldown, and will produce more damage than most other 1-2 AoE punches available, which again is going to be more significant to other ATs than blasters that have less attacks as a whole to work with, but Fire Breath still outdoes many Blaster secondary AoEs.

This is very thorough, helpful feedback and the exact sort of depth of experience with newer issues/Homecoming that I was looking for—thank you!

In particular, the incidental range buffs from IO’s (and potentially even the Alpha incarnate slot) widening the cone are definitely appealing.

  14. I just made a villainous Fire/Martial Combat (with plans for Electric epic) Blaster modeled after Azula from ATLA (plz don't nerf me copyright lawyers). LOVE her conceptually--I can hear the voice actress saying all of the responses to mission dialogue in my head!

Fire Breath is a power that I used to love back on live as an intentional 1-2 AOE opener with Fireball, usually following BU + Aim. Perez Park solo farming days! However, I'm now finding it to be a bit more lackluster, perhaps due to MC's lack of BU?

Thematically, I can go either way. PRO: I could justify it as another savant skill she's picked up or simply an innate familial power she's debuted since Iroh is capable. CON: I've tinged all of her powers to be her iconic blue fire, but it looks weird for the fire breath, which I've defaulted back to its standard fiery colors.

I also feel like the pace of the game has changed dramatically since I played last, particularly at level 50+, with IO's + Incarnates. Obviously, I can just respec out of it if it becomes irrelevant, but curious if any level 50's have deemed Fire Breath "too slow" for incarnate strength teams?

Grateful for any HC vet opinions!

To make me feel better I told myself it was someone who is new to the game, just worked a 14 hour shift at work, got the baby down to bed, and just needed to take some time to decompress. Then logged in to see that a pvp IO that they got as a lucky drop the week before sold for 110m influence!

I love this perspective! You’re definitely right, someone (hopefully multiple people!) logged in to delightful surprises 😄

Honestly, I really have a good sense of humor about it—it really is just a game and I’m hoping others can laugh at my booboo. Unlike Tiger King, I WILL financially recover from this 😂

  18. Hello!

Super old time player (joined around issue 4 on live and played like crazy; tapered off an issue or two after IO's debuted) who has returned to bonk bad guy noggins (or good guy noggins, depending on the mood). I'm looking for a kind and regular Supergroup to explore content, trials, task forces, and this fascinating world of incarnates!

During live, I played primarily on Justice (global was @Mystic Amethyst). Bonus points for any SG's with similar old-time fogeys who remember walking uphill both ways (with troll boulders slung at you from all directions) in the Hollows or those who remember when it was a power spike to upgrade from DO --> SO enhancements, let alone HamiO's or IO's!

Have a level 50 blue side (Robotics/Time MM, "Helen Killer"), but can easily flex between either villain or hero 🙂

    @Kaipto = global.

    Best,

    Kaipto
