Soloing better has everything to do with keeping yourself alive under the most difficult setting possible and variations of difficulty from there down to easiest.

    ELec Affinity wins hands down

You are extremely hard to kill

Watch the video I made so you can find out why. Elec affinity has more instruments to help you solo under greater challenges.

To answer your other question --

Again, for pure buffing. Elec affinity will do better

For pure debuting thermal will do better

801s, my AE challenges, iTrials, Master ITF 54x8 and so on

Thank you. Do you have an Elec/Elec build you wouldn't mind sharing? Could be interesting after the Shock changes.

Follow up: some people say Elec Affinity is "busy." Would you say it is tough to pilot?

ON a purely buffing set, way way way OVER thermal/ice.

On a hybrid of buffing/debuffing, no.

Electric does not have the debuffs like thermal.

On ability to solo , again, WAY over, elec affinity wins

Thanks Voltak. I would THINK Thermal/Ice would solo better, since it has debuffs and Elec does not. So I appreciate this. Would you say Elec/Elec is much harder to drive than Thermal/Ice?

Lastly, I see you have a lot of experience with the difficult content in the game. Which of these combos do you think does better in said content like iTrials, Aeons, 801's, etc?

Elec/Elec Defender is S tier support, at the top echelon, easily.
The resists , the mez protection, endurance drain resistance that you provide to the team, providing absorb shields to the team, you boost the recharge speed of your team and yourself, the endurance boost (helping fill up the endurance bar for all of you) and the power boost like buff in Amplify , the damage reduction debuff that you apply to enemies...

Is is super good.  Electric Affinity is a masterful creation by the Developers, it is a 10 out of 10.

Would you rank it over Thermal/Ice?

Katana is fast.  Probably the fastest of the melee sets.  Gives you some +Def, and gives foes -Def.  As @Without_Pause mentioned, lethal damage is suboptimal for the solo tanker.  Most Tankers probably also do not take it because they want a set that has more AOEs.  Nothing wrong with that.  But I think Katana's niche is best on a Scrapper or Stalker where they can really deal out the ST damage.

Katana Tankers exist.  I think I've seen 2 wandering around Torchbearer.  Again, it's all on what you want to play.

On the topic of Katana Scrappers Frozen, what secondaries would you pair Katana with on a Scrapper?

In general, Elec Armor is just one of the best resist powersets. Back on live, once Conserve Energy was changed to Energize, that was pretty much a wrap haha. Elec has a bit higher baseline resistance numbers, a heal, an endurance ability, and a +rech autopower. Generally a well-rounded resistance powerset. I've got a SS/Elec Brute I use as our primary tank on LRSF runs and he's been one of my favorite toons since 2008 (between live/homecoming of course).

SS/Elec sounds like an awesome combo. I'm looking to pair with Katana or MA myself. More for thematic reasons.

  6. I thought I'd update this! It was a closely contested race on the Reddit poll, but the eventual winner was..... Psi/Shield! I'm actually pretty stoked on the combo, because it's a cool combo.

I will primarily be leveling that build. As a secondary, I decided to slow level the KM/Ice Scrapper as well. I actually dig the KM animations, and like some noted, there just aren't enough Ice Armor Scrappers out there! Will be cool to have a pretty rare combo.

If anyone has any advice on either combo, please feel free to share.

Kat/Ninja scrapper is a nice one as mentioned (and thematic).   The melee defense of divine avalanche matches nicely as noted (instead of only stacking lethal).  Also, probably the main weakness of ninja is its lackluster DDR.  So, being able to overcap melee defense is nice when you get hit with those defense debuffs.

I do tend to prefer katana on a scrapper in general due to the natural extra bonus crit chance golden dragonfly gets.  I don't think any other AT gets anything extra.  But not a big enough deal that other AT's wouldn't do fine with it.

Stone armor is an interesting idea as well with the buffs it got and being able to add some non-lethal damage into the mix.

Also had good luck with willpower if you want a pure "natural" character.

Thanks for this breakdown!!! Stone does seem interesting. I’m wondering if Kat’s +Def would be redundant… always good for dealing with defense debuffs I guess. Or you could just skip it.

Don't sleep on Ice. 1. It is DoT heavy and Fury loves DoT. 2. Ice Patch is a huge boon in survivability. More so if you solo. 3. The damage isn't great, but it is solid and rarely resisted. 4. You can add in epics to further smooth out your attacks.

It should go without saying that Rad is an easy recommendation. There is the con of animation times for ST attacks. The pro is how good IG is on a Brute procced out.

Stone would also be good as Elec helps Stone. I like StJ and Kat. I have taken them to 50 on other ATs. I did have a Kat/elec Brute which I deleted for no real good reason. On the plus side, Kat cast times are all under 2 seconds, so you attack chain is going to fly. Kin isn't going to be better on a Brute. Psionic is a bit wonky in how it plays. Insight is random in being triggered and you will be locked out at times. Boggle does increase the chance for Insight, but that's only really more beneficial when soloing.

I've taken Claws to 50 three times. I might talk myself into a fourth. I even did it on a Brute and have no real qualms with it, BUT the Scrapper version is just better for two reasons. The recharge on Spin and slotting the ATO 50% proc into FU. I would honestly grab /stone, /ea, or /sr on a Scrapper and use Claws with that.

I think I might try that Kat/Elec Brute sometime. For a Scrapper, do you like Energy Aura or Stone Armor more?

The difference even FEELS pretty staggering. All about what you value more though. Rad Armor is a weird duck for scraps and brutes. It clearly is tougher to kill on brutes, but definitely gets more damage with the scrapper version.

Your'e dead =  You do Zero DPS

They're Dead = They do Zero DPS

    WHAT DO (I pop insp)

I guess in a PERFECT scenario for a Brute, they’ll be tougher AND eventually do more damage than the scrapper with fury built to the max…. But that happens in what, 1% of instances? Lol

I tried to click to Vote but it doesn't seem to be working :P. ill give my opinion instead and say pick the one that is going to be the least boring to you personally and maybe test them in the test server.

Weird! It should still be live.

And I need to download the test server. Due to my analysis paralysis, I thought this was an easy way to say “welp, this is what I’m going with because the people have spoken” 😂 just curious, what would you have voted for?

Lin has more than a decade long reputation for being the "don't die" person in this game. Lin says "this is how to reduce risk of 0 HP" then that's a fact.

Yeah, for some reason the 2.5x toughness of the brute over the scrap wasn’t clicking for me with the 75% vs 90% resist cap, but when he broke it down in layman’s terms, it clicked 😂

Brute should be much tougher. For me, the difference maker might be the Scrapper ATO’s. If the baddies are dead, they can’t hurt you…. On the flip side, you can’t hurt anyone if you’re face-planted 😂

Don't you like being impaled by your own powers?

Hey, at least the spikes are going OUT 😂 honestly, once all of Ice’s armors are going, you don’t notice it as much.

To me this just says that WM even with its outstanding aoe and superior mitigation manages to equal BS in a ST scenario, making WM superior all around.

As to the topic, I'll say KM/ice just to encourage more Nascar miming in the world!

I would be standing on the shoulders of this man’s great build.

KM/Ice seems like a spicy combo. I find the Icicles animation to be pretty jarring.  Anyone else find this?

Like, not that it doesn’t look COOL (pun intended), but it is just random where the spikes pop out lol. Cool concept of having this offensive armor piercing foes though. I guess if you have the right costume concept to match with it?

    45 minutes ago, Errants said:

Also voted KM/Ice, need moar /Ice Scrappers.

True! And I would say this is my one gripe though… Icicles IS cool, but it seems to really take over a costume. I guess the same could be said about Rad Armor.

Scrapper resist cap is 75% ... if a mob is tossing 1000 dps, you'll take 250 dps of damage.    (assuming you build for the resist cap, vs an offensive build)

Brute resist cap is 90% ... if a mob is tossing 1000 dps, you'll take 100 dps of damage.   (assuming you build for the resist cap, vs an offensive build)

250 incoming dps on the scrapper / 100 incoming dps on the brute = 2.5 x more incoming dps on the scrapper.

Assuming you stand there and take it without doing anything else about it, the brute will live 15 seconds, while the scrapper will live 5 seconds.

    Thanks for breaking it down!

Kat/Rad.  The plus def attack should get you to melee defense soft cap pretty easy.  Rad is great on a scrapper.  I have a psi/shield and it is fine but don't play it much.

Ty for this. Might want to pick your brain on that combo.

As a rule, I do not generally recommend resist armors on 75% resist cap ATs, due to the 2.5x incoming damage issue.

      Reveal hidden contents

    Armor Types (Armor Recommendations):

    I recommend:

Defense Armor: EnA (Any AT), Inv/ and SD/ as the Tank Alternatives.

Resist Armor: RadA (Brutes and Tanks Only).

Heal Armor: Bio (Any AT, paired with a Defensive Weapon).

    Offense Armor: SD, Bio

Defense Armors, Expanded and In Order of Durability: EnA (Any AT, Add Resists, Intermediate), SR (Advanced), SD (Intermediate), Inv (Easy). If you’re not picking EnA, I Recommend Inv. Inv is very easy to learn and drive, and very durable. Once you get your feet under you, then you can pick some of the more difficult to drive armors. My personal Favorites are EnA and SD, but I find myself driving EnA and Inv most often.

These are old builds from the archives, none are offensively oriented, none are proc builds, but they may or may not be helpful:

    Kat Rad Brute - Tacidar - Mu 4 (Psi-Tank) - [i25].mxd 5.26 kB · 52 downloads   Rad Kat Tank - Radicat II - Mu 3f - [i25].mxd 7.16 kB · 208 downloads   Kat Rad Scrapper - Radicat-S 3a - [i25].mxd 5.25 kB · 0 downloads   BS SD Scrapper - Hasten 2 - [i25].mxd 5.31 kB · 0 downloads

Thanks for this. Curious what you mean by the 2.5x damage by having a 75% resist cap? Looks like you’re saying Brute might be the way to go for that combo.
