Hello Captain. Welcome back to the game.! And its great you joined the Sentinel club. I have been playing for a month and so I cann not directly offer you advice on the best build, but I can offer you my personal experience and some information that I have read that was very helpful. Finally I can point you to some information just around the corner so to speak. The very first Hero I made was a Water/Regen. I played it until level 17 and something about it did not click. I thought it had to be the AT and switched to playing a Brute (SF/SR). This was much more fun. After some time I realized I really liked the SR Secondary and tried it on a Tank and a Scrapper.... And finally I thought why not go back to Sentinel with Water/SR. This combo was awesome. And it became my favorite. Reading around the forums sort of comfirmed this. The general consensus seems to be that SR is very good on Sentinels. Conversely, with the extensive reading I have done - Regeneration is quite difficult to make work and its an uphill battle to solo with it. STong options include EA, Rad, Bio. Also others are very solid, but I have not found any posts that recommend Regen - Especially during the leveling process. Of course if you have decided Regeneration is hard wired into your Hero concept, give it a go and I love to hear if your experience was better than mine. As for some guidance, a few posts down, I asked for help in a similar way. There are several very excellent posts that were a great help to me. There is also a build which at least down the Primary can offer you some inspiration. And why solo? Look me up in game (WaveSurge)

I came upon this thread from some time ago and I was wondering if opinions have changed in the last 4 years? And where would the Storm Primary fit into this list? From what I have read it seems less than satisfying. Got my first Sentinel to 50 and looking at another. Thinking maybe Beam Rifle.

Hi all, Being new(ish) to the game, I can offer only a limited experience. But, for me. Sentinels are just perfect. I thought I was going to be a Brute Player and one day decided to take my love for SR on my brute and try it on a Water Sentinel. I cant look back. I dont overly concern myself with Minx Max concepts but rather playstyle and just pure joy. And for that, Sentinel delivers. A few have suggested already the ability to plug a front line hole or swing back to provide cover for the squishies, while putting up some control and consistant damage is what makes them special. They can go anywhere, be anything, do anything and I love it. That all said, the OP has a point. Not that his concept should replace Sentinels no no. Rather, wny not just create another AT - if the Devs could ever get to it. The DESTROYER AT. Assault plus Armour. I like it. Would definitely play it. This would be Spiderman imo. Asaault plus SR. Still, Sentinels would be my 10/10.

Thank you for the help! I am now much more confident on what to do

Thank you DrB! Good Advice, all of it. I have taken your words and the build suggestion of FupDup and I have a much better Idea of what to do. Still figuring a lot out but progress has been made!

Hello Dr. Buzzard, At the risk of sounding elementary, I undstand that by Defense, you mean focusing on the Defense *Stat*, which I further undertand is *softcapped * at 45%. I am not sure if you are suggesting that I ignore the RESIST stat completely and instead focus on? More offense? IF that is true, the issue for me in applying your advice would be .... how? For example, I read a post from 5 years ago that went nto some detail about Water Sentinels and SR secondary. In partciular 2 knowlegeable posters comented on what conceptulally was the best approach. Most of that converstation wa s way above my head. I further researched Sentinels in general and would read things (again oten posted some time ago) that Ragnoark was the best for Primary and I shoudl mule up on Toughness. Trying to fugure out what this meant led me to the wiki for Ehancement Sets. From this I undertand I need to go to the Auction house. I search for Raganarok and find one of them costs on average 15 Million Influene. On me at the time I had 10 Million credits to my name, most of that donated. This leads me to reading a very detailed guide on the Auction House, I apply the advice offered and I am able to make enogh to have a respectable budget (one week later of grinding). And all that leads me back here becuase I still don''t know if Ragnarok is my goal - a long term one - and even if it was, what to do after that. From the perrspective of a new player... I find many of the posts assume the reaader alsrady as a BA in CoH and default to PHD type discussion. I respect the knowledge of those who have put in the work. That said, my current level of eductation CoH wise would not be higher than a relative grade 5. I suspect that new players in general experience much the same as I do.

Thank you again, I will study it with care.

Hello and Thank you very much. Currently I have all the Water Attack Powers and All the SR powers. I 6 slotted every attack power and I kind of get the feeling its overkill :). So, if I read you correctly, I should drop Elude and Possibly Water Blast (I like the knockdown though) and the Aqua Bolt. I went into Electrical powers with the idea of having the aura, the hold and a team heal, but none of these seem to be worth the investment. I lover hover, fly and Eavasive manuevers - the last one seems to push me over the 45% DEF I have read about and now undertand a little more about the soft cap. Finally, I took Leadership Manuevers for yet more DEF. My poor attempt at set slotting is in order down for the water powers (again I have them all 6 slotted) Thunderstrike, Detonation, Devastation, Prevetative Medicine (thought heal would be good in Dehydrate) Gaussians, Impeded Swiftness, Ice Mistrals, Annihilation, and finally Bombardment. On the SR side I only have Doctored wounds on Master Brawler. I had no idea where to start on filling the other SR powers as none of them are 6 slotted. Finally I have 3 slots in Stamina with Performance Shifter. I think my resistances are very weak and my primary goal would be to get them as high as possible. Im more then willing to sell off my current sets to buy better ones. Any builds sent my way, would be well received.

Hello! I have been playing for a month and really enjoying the game (great news on becoming official) After getting a SF/SR Brute to 37, I started a Water/SR Sentinel and found it very much to my liking. So I worked on it and got to 50, saved up 100 Million and ... Now I am at a loss on what to do. The more I read, the more confused I get. Alpha Power, Procs, Soft caps, Mule powers, x set vs. y set. Etc. - I cant see the light for the avaiable data. I am hoping that one of the Sentinel Masters is kindly enough to walk me through on what powers I should take with how many slots in each and what sets I should place in them. I am an open book on this and sincerely appreciate any advice. My prefered play style is as tanky as possible while still doing respectable damage. I like getting up close and personal with the Villians. If this has already been answered, my apologies, I read some old posts on building this type of sentinel, but afterwards still had no idea what was best for a Tanky Water/SR.

Thanks for all the replies. I now have level 37 Staff Fighting/SR Brute. Say Hi is you see me, Called LittleStick and usually hanging with my wife TinyFury. Game is awesome. Community is even better!
-
Thank you. I will look at it closer. Still learning about proper slotting.
-
Would love to know how it goes for you. And, Retire... More time for gaming 🙂

My first try at it was Dark/SR and it synergises really well, but I suffered from END problems and could not really figure out how to fix it. But I agree its a great combo
-
So in the end I tried an SF/SR Brute and I think its alot of fun. That said, I became a big fan of Eye of The Storm ... which led me to thinking about pairing this with EA and buiding around a cyclone concept type character. WoW - This was MOST fun. I still think SR is my favvourite overall defense, but SF just seems to gel with an Aura. It was a bit of a road to get to a SF/EA combo, but I think this will be the main. (There is so very little about this on the forums I feel Im going to have to figure it all out by trial and error). If anyone has an tips for my final interation Brute with SF/EA I am very grateful. See you in Paragon City!

True true. I am going to try the Staff. Could not find much information on Brutes with a Staff and SR (only something from 5 years ago... Any tips?

I agree that playing what is most fun is the way to go. Sometimes one can get lucky and find a poweful (meta?) build that for them is also fun. I think I was looking to get into that sweet spot of a build that feels imactful and also feels sexy (to quote evetsleep). The powerset I gel with the most is, oddly, staff fighting (doing a 180 on my no weapons comment earlier). But Savage Strike (by all accounts) seems significantly stronger. Still in the running is ice melee. I appreciate all the comments, given me lots to think about!
-
Thank you. I have been doing a lot of reading and Savage seems to be recently gaining in popularity. And with both you and biostem mentioning it, I think this is the current front runner :). Also I decided no weapons for this build.

Wondering which of these would be the least Mechanics heavy, I.e. fairly easy to play and not have to worry about keeping track of too many things?

Hello, After nearly 2 decades I have come back to CoH and loving it. I have messed around with 20 or so combinations and decided I like Brutes and Super Reflexes and I want to build a main character after all the trials I have done but I am seriously torn as to the primary. I tried Dark Melee and was having some issues with END and using dark maul properly on more than one mob. Also tried Phycic Melee and found the animations and sounds not very Bruitish. That said, I can go back to these two if advice given leads in that direction. Thanks in advance for any help.
