  1. Fair point Rudra However these are merely suggestions. The actual accolades could be swapped / substituted for whatever was felt useful. My "objective" was to suggest the additional Day Job Accolades - where possible - utilize Existing Assets in the game engine. I am no expert in these matters however I do believe that using existing assets would make such a technical update "easy" to implement. Since it would be such a 'small job' it would not strain the Devs time... it would /could actually be a fun little side project. A few badge artworks / a little write up / existing reward and power assets / no changes to game balance or mechanics / etc Further since this would be exclusive to Homecoming - the Devs could exercise a little personal 'cheeky humour' in writing up the Accolade description. I kind of hint that in some of my write ups such as - Reward Travelers Jet Pack (the knowledgeable know how to avoid rush hour) ** warning the "cheeky humour" below in spoiler below may be slightly offensive to some
  2. Addendum: It would also be "thematically" neat if there were a few scattered offices / 1 floor (ie The Vault) of the Paragon Times Newspaper to earn a Day Job Badge. "City Beat Reporter" - earn Patrol XP It could be a substitute eligible in all Day Job Accolades. After all Clark Kent and Peter Parkers were 🙂
  3. Hail all. Firstly I recognize (and thank) the development team has limited time / resources... so really this is low priority 'a nice to have'. Additionally I am influenced by some RP motivations. Secondly being new to the game perhaps I am working off incomplete info - I used the wiki.... and a forum search so please ignore me if this is well documented and I missed it. 🙂 However if it is a small incremental change - then perhaps its 'easy' (?) and could make the cut ? Playing the game / reading in depth / trying to build my characters - a number of ' low hanging fruit ' Day Job Badge Accolades occurred to me as being obvious. Good for RP potential and expands access to some of the existing accolade rewards: Accolade Requirement Benefit First Responder : Law Enforcer (Police) + Caregiver (Hospital) : Reward mimic Physician / Perhaps a defibrillator etc Urban Planner: City Official (City Hall ) + Commuter (Monorail) : Reward Travelers Jet Pack (the knowledgeable know how to avoid rush hour) Public Health Official : Caregiver ( Hospital ) + Clubber ( Pocket D) : Reward Vitalize Ally Heal ( Has learned to never abandon their drink at the bar) Animal Control Warden: Survivalist (Compound) + City Official (City Hall) : Free Vanity Pet or even perhaps 1 premium summon 50 charges Ecologist : Survivalist (Compound) + Professor (University) : Rune of Purification ( always boil the water before you drink it ) --- a little more work / streamlining: Politically Active : City Official ( City Hall ) + Freedom Corps * Or Monitor Duty ( SH HQ) : Reward could be a Placate Skill Baton ie diplomacy. Separates time in Freedom Corps HQ into its own separate badge (Heroic Socializer). I am certain there are other that occur to experienced players... this was just a small list / attempt to add flavor in a quick easy fashion without unbalancing the game / changing powersets etc Regards
  4. Hail Friends. (Thx by the way for all the valuable advice hither so far.) The Pay to Win Vendor sells a number of "premium pets" if I can use that terminology. Perhaps they are properly called something else - I am just too new. These Pets cost about 1MM Influence and there are a number of selections : Wolf / Shadow Wolf / Panther spring to mind as potential RP choices... however the selection is fairly extensive. I went to the Homecoming Wiki to read / learn / study them. However these pets seem to have Red Links - ie. no further information. Questions: 1) Are they as durable as other pets based on archetypes that have power sets to summon ? 2) Given that a archetype I am playing may not have a power set to heal / buff them - are they quickly 'fodder' in a battle? By extrapolation would a Blaster / Defender / Sentinel or some such type benefit from them or are they simply best to 'add quantity / quality' to a Mastermind ? 3) Do 'complimentary' powersets work to heal or buff them. ie. Say I have a Rad / Rad Defender - does the party buff powers of my Defender also aid my pet as if I was my 'own task force' ? 4) Do they affect the challenge rating of a mission ? Am I effectively a 'hero / sidekick of two' with such a pet? I may choose to experiment with it for RP - character concept - in any event however, I am reluctant to spend 1MM influence for a 'nice to have' as all my Superheroes are in the 15 - 25 range. I have a lot of Crafting expenses planned and facing me 🙂 Is there an info link I have overlooked ? I could not find anything specific in the forums here. Thank you once again for all your sage wisdom.
  5. Sorry for all the alliteration 😎 Old long time Marvel Fan... Peter Parker / J Jonah Jameson / Reed Richards / Sue Storm / Matt Murdoch ......LOL
  6. Follow Up: Continue to meet very friendly and helpful heroes. Participated in a couple of joint missions while I "side kicked" an experienced player. I am the type of "limited OCD player" as I feel compelled to take my time to "earn every badge I can / read every monument / learn the lore". This server is full of great people. Still looking for a "Role Play above medium" - Superhero group that would perhaps mentor me as I prefer to learn and play that style.... If you see me Online - please do not hesitate to reach out. Willing to side-kick / participate in a positive way I can - @NordSask The NordSask Family of Mutants When Pierre and Pam Petard had the opportunity to move to abandoned Uranium City SK they jumped at the opportunity, Pierre a Nuclear Physicist and Pam an Environmental Engineer sought to study the environs of the abandoned Eldorado Mine for 4 years then return to the University of Ottawa to complete their Thesis's based on that work. However during their stay a Persied Meteor Shower ignited Uranium traces in the ground and they were soon consecutively parents of four sons. The pregnancy's and labour were difficult in so remote a location however the boys were born with the assistance of a mysterious Cree Obijwe Mashkikikwinni - a Medicine Man. The Boys grew up healthy and strong with unusual abilities. The Petards stayed in the far north becoming famous for their science contributions and fortitude and recently retired to a warmer climate / less remote area. Nord SaskradQuatch - Brute Rad/Inv Paul Petard the eldest boy is a almost 7 foot tall / broad shouldered / 350 pound 'soft-spoken' Brute of a man. Paul was born under the impression totem of the legendary northern Sasquatch and perhaps this influenced his stature / powers / and shyness. Paul obtained a Bachelor of Business Admin in Accounting and was able to secure a "Day job" with the Vault Inc in Paragon City. He has been promoted to Senior Assistant Manager Anti Money Laundering Reporting and Compliance which often gives him hints towards proceeds of crime. Further his job allows him to travel between locations and therefore respond to crisis / patrol at night. Nord SaskradFrost - Blaster Rad/Cold Peter (John) Petard (Just call me 'Jack') is the second son and is an 6'6 muscular swift reactions and slim man with prematurely white (almost silver) hair. He is very outgoing but is known to potentially have a flash temper that soon fades. His Wentworth colleagues often knickname him "Jack Frost or Jack Flash" . Jack was born during an intense cold snap ( a large white out storm followed by - 40 degree weather) and perhaps these conditions affected his looks / personality and powers. Jack obtained a Marketing Degree about the same time his elder brother did and moved with him to Paragon City. He obtained a career track Day Job with Wentworth's -first as a day trader and latter as a buyer and corporate historian. His position allows him to view suspicious sales that might be linked to crime / additionally he often travels from store location to store location permitting him to patrol and react to the police scanner for emergencies. Arktikos Nord - Scrapper Claw/Bio Patrick Petard is the third son and stands a slight 6 feet tall with a slim build and discrete tattoos upon his body - especially on his hands and feet although he also possess a large birth mark upon his face (which he covers up somewhat) . Patrick was born under a totem of the Bear and perhaps this impacted his mutated powers and abilities. Patrick adopted the Superhero name Arktikos the ancient Greek word for Bear and source word for "Artic". Patrick choose a different path than his brothers studying Wildlife and Ecology. Graduating a few years later his brothers - they helped him network into Paragon City Hall where he obtained a Day job as a city official responsible for mitigating impact of so many super powered humans and beast upon the parks and natural fauna of Paragon City. His role allows him to travel extensively through out the city responding to crisis and crime. Aegis Nord - Defender Rad/Rad Parker Petard is the fourth and final son of the family - a smallish 5'8 with a slim build. Parker was born during the height of secondary Persied Meteor Shower and so is more unusual and different than his brothers and people in general - and is somewhat aloof or hesitant having few relationships outside his family. He has adopted the name Aegis - the ancient Greek word for Shield. His entire body is covered in a 'dirty silver sheen' of what might almost seem metal and he is in essence a human of almost pure Uranium Radiation - both the aggressive forms such as Xray - and the healing forms such as medical isotopes. Parker lives quietly with his brothers in their large shared condominium often hid away. If he does go outside it is often in trench coat hat and glasses in such a manner to disguise his features and not scare innocent citizen. He monitors Police Radio calls of distress for all four brothers - acts as the clearing house of all information - and while he contributes the least financially - he contributes the most medically.
  7. I would like to offer this small contribution for consideration. "Mutation and the consequences" Uranium City SK Canada some 50 - 70 years after the town of 5000 was completely abandoned following the collapse of Uranium Trade ( Cold war / 3 Mile Island / etc etc) Longitude 59'33 Latitude 108'36 (oops should have added... Image is CBC Radio (News Media) 40 years old and should be public domain)
  8. I don't agree universally with all your statements - but I specifically concur with your sentiment. None of the Marvel Movie nor DC Characters are representative of their comic counterparts - especially pre movie. Especially of the pre-2000 era. Especially before John Byrne / Allan Moore / Frank Miller et al of that generation really did deep introspections of the silver aged heroes. I do note 'perhaps' a move by the comics to actually mimic the movies somewhat more. In addition to the characteristics of the actors showing through a'la your Sean Connery example... the directors and writers seem also to bend the traits of the hero as well. The directors and writers will 'pinch' elements of the most beloved story arcs of characters without almost any reference to the years and years of lore and build up to these epic confrontations of enemies / faults / capabilities / mistakes ./ successes / losses and gains. What comes across to the loyal reader is the culmination often of years.... in the movies its a 3 minute flashback. Further these writers rarely use a "full adaptation' but rather makes changes / steal bits and pieces / recycle bits and pieces in the next episode. Its sad because what 'moved' comic geeks like me would likely move non comic geek movie goers if they were provided that depth and time. While this is obviously an opinion - my 'proof' if such can be said is the success of the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy and especially the success of the "extended Directors Cut" version. While they made monumental shifts in a lot of characterization and plot - movie goes got invested because time and the small details matter. I concur - never dismiss a new actor as a candidate for a role as " Captain America / Iron Man / Superman/ Wonder Women " etc. You may not love the new actor as much as you did the historic first - but then the historic first actor rarely represented the character I read in 1980. In the end I enjoy both but accept they are different.
  9. Managing Stamina is clearly a 'thing" in the game. A lesson learned. 🙂 I set my difficulty as +1 level and Bosses when solo. Nevertheless my Brute / Scrapper need to carefully prepare/manage for the boss in any mission - that is ensure they are rested / inspirations etc. Its all good - just a learning curve. However I wonder : Perhaps I have not devoted enough enhancement slots in Stamina for these characters ? - Is there a 'rule of thumb' i.e. 1 Stamina Enhancement slot every 10 levels ? 1 @ 10 - 2 @ 20 etc ? - I specify my Brute / Scrapper as opposed to Blaster(s) I play as the Blaster 'use range - hit and run" techniques seem to mitigate the issue more so. - My Sentinel is somewhere in between. Follow up: The enhancements I used were "Enhance stamina" as opposed to "Recharge". Should I be using both or do most people ignore 1 for the other ?
  10. Good Morning Everlasting ! ( munches lawful Chocolate Covered Doughnut with Blue sprinkles while rotating map with a puzzled look )
  11. Healthy debate which is great ! Disclaimer: new to game and certainly not an expert however this is indeed close to my years of experience. ... but this one sentence captures my attention. @Members stated It's because of that generally I use game mechanics as more of a guide of how the RP went. My character took 0 damage that encounter against Recluse because they're IO'd out to the brim, but RPly my character had a decent slug out and probably caught a blade or three. That two second stun was much longer in RP. Just because the mechanics and experience of the party / team / task force comes through a scrap largely unaffected does not mean you have to RP the battle that way. I completely agree that sourcing RP in Power Level is a mistake. One does not have equal the other. Batman and Captain America fight Cosmic Threats. Superman rescues cats in trees for little children. Tony Stark fought alcoholism. The Hulk confronts bullies bothering Rick Jones. Colossus is invulnerable practically but stresses protecting the party of Xmen he fights with - throws Wolverine spit balls to 'focus' the aggression on himself and Wolverine knowing Logan's healing and his own form can stand the punishment. CoH Examples springs to mind: - Tanker : I took a lot of hits and scratches that fight woo boy.... just a few minutes so I can bandage these up ( Destroy or unnecessarily use a couple of 'healing inspirations' ) - Mage : In order to tackle this threat to Paragon City and the world - I delved deep into my Arcane Lore. I am glad we are triumphant however my magic sources for this battle are consumed ( Destroy or unnecessarily sell / dispose of 1x Spell Ink / 1x Spell Rune / 1x Demonic Threat Report ) The RP opportunity is not necessarily to (1) tackle underpowered or (2) not use your capabilities to the fullest or (3) limit the Heroic level - although those 'might be art of it' But to emphasize that (1) every victory has a cost (so RP it) and (2) with great power comes great responsibilities As I say I am rather new here to offer so many opinions so ask for tolerance. however understand I have been DM'ing / RPG since the 1980s 😲
  12. How to do it wrong / How to do it right. I think McSpazz did more than adequately address how a true Flaw is much harder to portray in an MMO as opposed to PnP. As stated in PnP the DM or Gamemaster can impose penalties / resistance rolls / temptations to the player. Often these are clarified in the ruleset. Roll this X and the consequences are Y on your "combat / Charisma / Alignment/ etc ad naseum. I do not know how your would be able to recreate that with out a DM led mission on and MMO - whereby the DM knowing your flaw orders you to 'pause' for a 'reason' and you 'accede". Here is an example that springs to mind. FLAW : If Drug Use / Addiction is a true flaw : In Single Player mode ( missions or small TF ) 1) Do you abandon a set amount of Influence Weekly for your 'habit' ? ( gift it to a stranger etc to represent the cost of the habit) Totally gone. 2) Return to your junkie on a regular basis ? Every day around 7pm you need to abandon a team / party / mission to return to Atlas Park and spend 20 minutes getting your fix ? As a drug user you would plan your day / life around getting that high.. 3) Are your friends / family / super team aware of your flaw and 'intervene' by forcing you into a rehab center for 90 days ? Betty Ford Atlas Park Chapter. Hero is inactive 90 real like days 4) Often Drug use addiction leads to estranged relationships. Spouse / Parents / Siblings abandon the person. Person can be superficially friendly but is deeply troubled and will not speak of their past / family / friends ... its only about the here and now after getting the fix. QUIRK : Smokes a 'mary-jane' joint before or after each mission to relax their nerves... ** (** assume marijuana is legalized in Paragon City) Very different way to play it out
  13. Question from a New Player. "What about DayJobs" ?? Can they be used to build the RP history of the PC - or accentuate it ? There is of course the 'mechanic' side of the game (which I have yet to learn and explore) ; however would a day job also be a way to express their other abilities / interests outside of smashing faces as so eloquently stated ? EG - My First Hero Nord SaskradQuatch - Mutant Canadian from the far north / Brute / Radiation and Invulnerable powers / Derived his name in homage to the legendary Saskquatch / Very much a "Do good things" based upon his parents and a Cree Medicine Man who has been integral to his life. Is soft spoken and some would even say shy. Keeps his "real name" a Secret Identity. Retiring like the Sasquatch .... Since his father was a Nuclear Physicist - Nord is good with Math. Quite / shy / Accounting springs to my mind Should he take a "Day job" as Norman the Accountant at the "Bank or Vault" to further flesh out his Role Play ? Is this deemed acceptable RP ?
  14. Hail all: New player to CoH Homecoming and MMORPG in general. However a player with a 'slight bit' of OCD 🙂 - I love the detail in the Guides / Wiki and I am the type of player who reads them all. I appreciate the hard work involved putting them together. If you take the time to use them they save you aggravation and INF even if you are not a min max player. Question : Is there a guide on "conventional wisdom" tips for longer term play ? I understand there will be opinions that differ but it would be nice to have a conventional wisdom guide ? ! ? ie. It seems universal that you do not create IOEnhancements till post level 20 due to scale. - I didn't happen to note this in a guide - I think I picked it up of a YouTube video although I could be mistaken ie. Save your Merit Points - don't spend frivolously - until higher levels to be able to purchase high recipes / salvage / rare items to craft your best hero. - Again I think I read that or inferred that from a help thread - a player running around with no enhancements try to save every last penny but struggling. I guess there is a balance. Anyway if there is a "Conventional Wisdom" Thread / Guide or some such thing and I missed it - please point me the direction.
  15. Hail all: Thank you to a number of Players I have met / chatted / offered advice. A very special Thank You to "LL*" who today invited me to my first DFB quest - spent some time chatting with me - helped me out a lot ! **names withheld to protect the innocent -- Very Middle Aged Canuck - veteran DM from the 1980's (40 years ago !) - played a lot of Neverwinter Nights - new to MMORPG. I missed out on this game in its day - sad and disappointed as I like the genre - and thrilled to be able to explore it anew. I am an RP /Action light or medium-ish - sort of guy - say 55/45. Being an 'older blind and slow to click' fool - I still hope to team up / join up / task force and meet / join a super group. 🙂 The learning curve from totally new is very large but I am enjoying it immensely ! If you see a Rad Brute - Nord Saskrad-Quatch - looking lost - feel free to say hello Regards to all players
  16. Hail Crystal Dragon. Do these continue in the New Year ? I have yet to even complete a tutorial but I think this is important useful information I should be aware of. Thanks in advance for any reply.
  17. Thank you chase ! Very much appreciated - all the advice. I created my first Brute after 2 plus hours in Character Creation - enjoying it immensely. RP means different things to different players - in all games of course. In traditional sword and sorcery it can be almost 90% social with strict rules or action / RP balance. I didn't want to offend the culture of the server - needed to check. If RP meant dedicated time staffing the Watchtower/Team Mansion I was pretty sure my spouse and adult children might not understand 🙂 However I hope to be a positive / 'in character' / contributor who plays a lot of Coop and enjoys in game super hero banter and ironic humour. Look me up as Nord Saskrad-Quatch if you have time to lead a rookie by the nose.
  18. Hail all : I am jumping into this thread as another new player with questions. Intro : Very Middle Aged Canuck with zero MMORPG and zero CoH knowledge / experience. However was a DM "way" back in the 80s/90's and did play a lot of Neverwinter Nights Persistent Modules in my day. I am one of those players that needs a concise biography / backstory but of course it would be brief as I know little of the 'Lore' of this game. I prefer an action / game pace that allows for some (tasteful) fun banter / ironic observations. Say 55% RP / 45% Action or something like that ? Everyone of course wants to end a villainous scheme and progress. Even have a concept in mind now - a group of 5 or so 'Player Characters' or perhaps Heroes - that are Fantastic Four meets Alpha Flight sort of thing. I am not a jump in sort of guy. I have been 'reading' a ton of wiki / forum threads / and even tried to follow a YouTube video or 2 - however the jargon / learning curve is steep. Of course a 'little OCD' goes hand in hand with everyone who is a Roleplayer 🙂 Questions : 1) I think Everlasting is where I should gravitate to... however should I jump into Excellsior just to complete the Tutorial / learn navigation / learn jargon first ? I understand you can port your characters to other servers latter. 2) The old D&D adage is everyone starts as a Fighter (if you played). However I see a fair amount of conflicting advice. If basic movement / navigation / chat / windows organization is steep should I not start as a Tanker or Brute ? I understand the lack of ranged combat and drawbacks however when at zero % learning - is it easiest to just 'wade into battle' and pound thru the tutorial ?? Thank you in advance for any advice.
