    • I get a strange error here in ReShade, that is easily fixable, I see no list of effects, only a yellow text that says "No effect files.." you can fix this by going to the Settings at the top of the ReShade window, click Effect Search Paths + to add a search path, then double click on "reshade-shaders" and "Shaders", the path should say "\\?\C:\Games\Homecoming\bin\win64\live\reshade-shaders\Shaders" or where ever you installed Homecoming if you didn't chose the default path.

When I follow these instructions the error remains. I still get "No effect files." Reloading changes nothing, reinstalling reshade does nothing.

I think it's time we retire them.

They're a staple. You'd have to replace them with something else which would mean more work and more art otherwise all the Oranbega stuff would make no sense and they're honestly not even the worst maps to navigate.

Then, IMO, at character creation there should be a pop-up that asks if you want the new player controls, or the veteran player controls instead of imposing different controls on people who've played the game for over a decade.  Again, just IMO and YMMV.

This seems reasonable, esp if the two choices are explained enough for context. Modern MMO controls vs Classic CoH.

Yeah, it's not well described in the text but it does happen.  Here's the full data from CoD.

If you want a more reliable way to get out of a jam or through a packed doorway, switch to Teleport or Combat Teleport.  Also works great if you are slowed, immobilized, or affected by -jump or -fly keeping you grounded.  Speed Phase, I agree, isn't as useful as it sounds.  For stealthing, which seems to be its only real use, I can't say I've ever really needed that to get to the end of a map anyway.

Stealth ALSO suppresses when attacked, damaged, when you attack, or when you click on a glowie.  And the stealth from superspeed by itself, even when not suppressed, isn't enough to keep you from being noticed by enemies if you pass right through them.  You'd need to add probably a stealth IO to it and then you'd be invisible to most.  But if you got damaged some other way, like running through a damage field of a CoT red crystal, say, you'd drop out of phase for 4 seconds.

It's better than nothing if you were already into the Speed pool for Hasten and didn't want to open another travel pool for Teleport, I guess.  But it's pretty unreliable in practice.

I know how stealth works, I started playing in May 2004 and I was playing when stealth stacking was broken (which appears to have also broken this). My issue is that the power description does not match what the power *does*.

I have teleport mostly via Mystic Flight on multiple characters, but that's beside the point.

If this power is meant for nothing but stealthing missions and requires you to have a stealth IO or be a stalker (or in page 7 a VEAT) to actually use it, it seems *extremely* limited in usefulness compared to what most other travel powers provide.

It's not that big a deal, I didn't take Super Speed for a bad copy of Phase Shift, it just needs a very explicit description of how it works.

  5. When I'm trapped in a corner I can't use it to pass through the mobs that are locking me in place, or get through a doorway blocked by mobs. This has happened twice on two separate characters. The power description says nothing about intangibility being conditional on not being attacked, just that you can be attacked.

It does have some use when at a contact or store to keep passing pedestrians from pushing me away.

Is this a bug? Should it be reported as a bug?

  6. I think it was a hecatomb recipe but tbh I'm not sure. I listed it for 11,000,000 and got the "are you sure you want to spend 550,000 inf to list this" dialogue, at which point it sold for like 1.1 or 1.2 million? I know people will (reasonably) ask if I'm sure this is what happened, but I am fairly certain this is what happened, and I did get the dialogue. I don't think you'd even get a dialogue for listing at 1,100,000 (55,000) as I think it kicks in at 100,000 (2,000,000). I didn't notice until I collected the inf and my total did not go up 11-12 million as one would expect or I would've left it in the consignment house window.

It was about 20-30 minutes ago on my character Fusioniste.

  7. I got the mission, cleared the Council base and found the spy's identity. After leaving, I had a timed mission to catch the spy in an Arachnos base. Upon entering the mission, I defeated one spawn of three Arachnos minions, after which I got dumped out of the mission with a "mission failed" message. I had already done this mission successfully yesterday so I am completely confused as to what happened. I doubt I was in the mission for a full minute.

    Was playing an Arachnos Widow.

This was an ongoing issue with the Positron TF; it seemed like every time I ran it, the team was made up of four exemplar/anchor pairs, and the client was still unstable enough that it was a crapshoot whether we'd make it past the middle of the TF without having someone crash or disconnect, with a 50% chance that it would be an anchor, causing their paired exemplar to be ejected from the TF. If it happened in the first two missions, we'd generally restart, but later in the TF we'd just bull through.

Oh yeah, it was so easy for something to go wrong that it almost wasn't worth it at times.

Wait a minute, you can't play the game when you're SKd?  I've been playing since I3 and never knew that!

Considering that your post that I responded to said that "if you're sidekicking you're there more for the XP than assisting the team" to which I replied "I still like playing the game" As in I responded to your implication that the only reason to sidekick was to power level. It's almost as if your response here doesn't have any relevancy to what your previous post said. If you're not going to add anything, why are you here?

Also, I can do that much faster by putting my character in a cave with my fire/rad tanker

    You know, it's funny.

Even with how janky and unreliable Sidekicking was in the ancient days of yesterbefore, City of Heroes was -still- the best MMO for being able to team up with your friends, regardless of level.  It was basically one of the major selling points for me when I was still dabbling in exploring other MMOs.

But you compare how things were back then to how they are today, and it's kind of funny that we considered -that- to be the pinnacle of "team-friendly MMO features."

Totally agreed. At the time it was a very nice option that didn't exist anywhere else

It's not even remotely a core premise. It's about as much of a core premise as that the highbie exemplared to you should be kicked from the taskforce if, at any point, one of your housemates tries to use the telephone. [1] It's the last vestige of a mechanic every other part of which has been removed because it was bad.

Presumably in the range-based suggestion (which is not as good as straight-up removal) the range could be generous enough that this wouldn't demand constant vigilance.

[1] Exactly this would happen in the old days of dialup, exemplar/sidekick pairs, and rigid upper level limits.

Early on in the CoH days when Exemplaring was new we had to start the Manticore task force multiple times because the one guy we had exemplared kept getting unexemp'd and booted. This was not the only time I experienced this, just the first.

I have to disagree heavily with getting rid of the zone RWZ raids, the experience and interactivity of being in an actual zone for the event (and the possibility of just unknowingly strolling into one in process) were the greatest aspects for me first playing this, and though it's minor, I certainly wouldn't deprive any new comer of that agency.

This is actually a big disruption, which is probably why other raids and trials happen in otherwise empty zones or in instances rather than in a zone that's also used for regular play. As @Apparitionpointed out RWZ also has fairly frequent TinPex TFs going on.

I mean, you're kind of asserting things that aren't at all true of the suggestion.  Like, why would you assume this would see a return of a pop-up?

This is simply "level -1 when far away, same level when close up."

I'm not certain you would be satisfied with any fix that isn't "remove the -1 level" but I just don't see it happening.

That's because any "fix" that isn't "remove the -1 level" isn't a fix.

Thematic arguments shouldn't even be considered. Fiction isn't written with game balance in mind, and so while sidekicks in comics or whatever are presented as less skilled/experienced/powerful than their mentors, they don't usually end up feeling completely ineffective. Plus, I want to add, the only thematic element of "sidekicking" is the name. The purpose of sidekicks in City of Heroes was so low level characters could team with higher level characters and have at least a chance of contributing. You could have multiple different sidekick/mentor pairings in just a few hours, showing this isn't the intercharacter bond such as seen between Batman and Robin or Captain America and Bucky, but again a game mechanics contrivance to make teaming easier.

So I think we can say the consensus is that the purple patch can hit side kicks (and masterminds) extra hard on edge cases and the -1 sidekick is that purple patch kicking while your down.

    Thank you for this summation

    Precisely

And yeah MM pets being -1 and -2 to the MM sucks. And if you're a sidekick then it's so much worse.

Dark Affinity is a buff and debuff set - Fade and Soul Absorption

Dark Miasma is a debuff and control set - Fearsome stare / Petrifying Gaze

Other then those 4 powers, both sets are the same.  Controllers don't need control powers in their secondary so get buffs, Def/Corr/MM don't need buffs when other sets offer it so they get controls powers.

That wasn't how it was decided, really.

Dark Miasma was developed as a thematic darkness-based debuff set for defenders and Dark Affinity was an adaptation to controllers. I tend to think that Dark Miasma's controls aren't really as impressive as Storm Summoning's controls, and that Dark Miasma's utility for control is often vastly overstated.

I don't mean Fearsome Stare is bad - it's really good. I mean that Petrifying Gaze + Fearsome Stare isn't comparable to a proper control set. Except maybe Illusion, which is arguably not a proper control set.

I'm not sure I'd like Dark Affinity for defenders or corruptors, though.

  14. I have to say that Atom Smasher may be the most satisfying power I have on any character right now.

Fire and Ice Blast both feel extremely impactful to me.

Gravity Control is wonderful for that "crunch" feeling.

Kinetics sounds very good and satisfying when using virtually any of the powers.

Foot Stomp and KO Blow both look and sound great. Well, KO Blow's alternate animation looks great. The default makes me think way too much of Popeye.

Shadow Maul's always been pretty satisfying.

The point is he wasn't fighting Mongul. He wasn't supposed to. Just as sidekicked heroes aren't supposed to be doing the beatdowns in CoH.

Buff. Click glowies. Debuffs won't work so well, but are worth a shot. Just don't feel slighted if you aren't dishing out the hurt on the bad guys.

Does anyone play like this? I don't recall ever seeing anyone advocate this sort of thing

Plus 99% of the time the only thing to do is participate in beat downs.
