Howdy,

 

This is my take so far on a Dark/Radiation Tanker. I am by no means an build expert so take what I post with a grain of salt!

 This toon is very young she just hit 50 a few days ago. I am sure there are some weird choices that I have made compared to what others would have done. I have had to take a bunch of set bonus to get my defense and resistance numbers where I wanted them. I really want to place damage procs and get rid of a few set bonuses in the future.

 I would think things in this build will change as she opens better incarnate abilities. But we will have to see what happens.

 

Defense and Resists

I was shooting for as many 90% resists as I could get. I Also wanted to get smash/lethal and Fire to defenses to 45% or higher.

I have a tendency to walk away from the computer to help with wife, kids, work, etc.  I wanted to make sure I could just throw this toon in AE farm and have the ability to walk away for 45 minutes and still be alive while mobs get eaten alive by the 2 damage auras. (I have tested this, and it works well)

 

Highlights and why I choose a few powers and IO’s

  1. I have tried to build her with a few extra damage procs in her two damage auras for a little extra boost of damage. – seems to work but I don’t have a combat log parser to look over the data to be 100% sure. (anyone have a combat log parser?)

 

  1. I wanted both the fear aura and the Oppressive Gloom aura since they are the unique type abilities for Dark Armor - so far they seem great for tanking and I think they can be a possible place to put future damage procs IO’s.  A mob that is not hitting me or my group is a good thing as a tanking type toon.  For slotting  I had to eat 5 slots with the fear aura for the needed smashing and lethal defense that I was lacking.  I am hoping to free up slots in the future when better Incarnate abilities are available. I also used 4 slots in Oppressive Gloom – This was for both the fire resist and the extra 15% accuracy to all powers.  (In the Mids program the 15% is stated as just accuracy – but in the game it says 15% accuracy to all powers)

 

  1. I put in 4 Ragnarök IO’s in Dark Obliteration for the same reason as Oppressive Gloom, fire resist and 15% accuracy to all powers.

 

  1. Cloak of Darkness is awesome. Unique stealth ability that does not seem to loose half its defense score is cool.

 

Low lights 

  1. There are 11 toggles in the build – the end drain is through the roof. I have found the only way to counter it is the Cardiac Alpha. So, I think that can be somewhat limiting in the future.
  2. I must use Ninja run. I wanted this build to have Haste. So I took out Super Leap and threw in Haste. I think this would be easy to fix if you don’t want Haste. (I might do this in the future)

Rumor out there is tank changes are coming. I have no clue what they are, but I think this will be the tank toon I hold onto and play for a long time.  

Please give any and all constructive criticism that you can. If you have a better build, please throw it my way. I think I have finally found a power combo that is unique enough to keep my interests for the long haul. I would like to build her into the best toon I can.

Big things I'm noticing: 

 

1.  You're reaching Resistance caps for Smashing, Lethal, Fire, Cold and Psi but with a fairly significant hole for Energy damage at 41.8%.    You're also not at positional softcap or typed Energy softcap, so your Defense isn't fully covering this hole in your Resistances.

 

2.  Endurance is an issue.   You don't have much endurance reduction slotting in your toggles (almost none in Death Shroud) and the Panacea, Miracle and Numina unique IOs alone aren't going to overcome this.     You don't have any incarnate powers selected in this build.    As built here, you're almost requiring a Cardiac core tree alpha to help manage this.    You'll also want all four of the passive badge Accolades (two of which - Atlas Medallion and Portal Jockey - also help with endurance).     In terms of incarnate selections, you may also want Ageless destiny and/or Support hybrid to further help with endurance management.     Alternatively / in addition, trying to fit a bit more endurance reduction into your most costly powers (Death Shroud and Cloak of Fear) is a good idea too.

 

As I see it you could fine-tune this in one of three ways.    First option - keep the build more or less as-is, as a tanker build with a bit more DPS than most.    If you're planning on doing mostly or entirely AE fire farms, then you should be fine as the energy hole will never be an issue in that context.     If you choose this option, I'd just look at moving a few slots around for a better overall endurance curve.    You're over softcap for Fire/Cold so you can afford to lose a slot or two off of Tough and Dark Embrace to shore up Stamina and Cloak of Fear.     Using a Cardiac alpha you'll still have capped Smashing/Lethal/Fire/Cold/Psi resists with only four slots in Dark Embrace and three in Tough.   

 

However, if you're wanting to be a top-tier main tank in content outside of fire farms, you'll probably want to go for optimizing either your Defense or your Resistance.   Doing either one is probably going to come at the cost of lowering your DPS.    If you lean into Resistance, you can start with the Tanker ATO sets - split into two different powers, Gauntletet Fist alone can give you 12% more Energy / Negative Energy Resistance.     

 

Alternatively, you can put your focus on Defense and aim for 45% in all three positions or in the six major types - Smashing, Lethal, Fire, Cold, Energy and Negative Energy.     You will want either strong Energy Resistances or capped Energy Defense (or positional defense, which does the same job) if you're going to be a strong main tank outside of farms, as it's an extremely common damage type.   

 

Going with either of the latter options will mean a major rework of the build, discarding almost everything that doesn't further the new goal and then adding back on whatever you have leftover space for once it's achieved.    If you have enough influence, one option would be to keep the build you've posted here as a farm build with the tweaks I've discussed above and make an entirely separate build in one of your alternate build slots for use in non-farm content.    This would mean buying everything over again and would be significantly more expensive than reworking your current build, but it's an option if money's no object.

This is a big help. 

 

I want to have a tank that can do it all. I am more the willing to buy 2 sets of IO's and use to different builds - If you are willing .. could you throw up a main tank build like you are describing- I honestly don't care the cost. Since this will be the main toon I play I am more then willing to throw money at the problem 🙂

This is a much, much stronger build for use in general content.    You have capped resistances to all but two damage types (Energy and Toxic) and even for those you have 61% and 51% Resistance respectively, combined with extremely good Defense numbers - softcap to Smashing, Lethal, Fire, Cold, Energy, NegEnergy and also to Melee.      You're going to do very, very well tanking with this build.   You should have no trouble tanking in pretty much every scenario.   For the Miss Liberty (formerly Statesman) Task Force in which you fight Lord Recluse, keep in mind that the blue buff tower gives a ToHit bonus of 30% to Lord Recluse so unless you have a dedicated support helping you tank for that particular fight you may want your team to prioritize the blue tower right after the red (+damage/+resistance buff) as otherwise he'll pierce your defense fairly easily.    This is not the usual order, however, so some teams may not listen.   That's just one fight with one AV across the entire game though.

 

In terms in incarnate choices, you'll want to stick with Agility alpha since it's part of what's giving you the softcaps.   For content under level 47 when alpha doesn't apply you won't be quite at S/L/E/N softcap, but you'll be close enough that purple inspirations will get you the rest of the way easily.    Consider going Ageless radial for at least one of your destiny choices since this will provide you Defense Debuff Resistance, very important in some content to keep certain enemy groups like Knives of Artemis from stripping down your defenses with their debuffs (plus the Ageless will help with endurance).    I'd go either Melee or Support for hybrid, probably Melee Core which will get you to 80% Energy Resistance and 70% Toxic Resistance with just three enemies around you.     That's not all the time since that's from the active part of the hybrid which is only up for a short while, but the passive regeneration boost will stack nicely with your Defense and Resistance to make you even tougher.   

 

I also strongly recommend the Geas of the Kind Ones / Invader accolade, which provides a massive boost to endurance recovery and recharge.    You won't need it often, but getting that massive recharge when you need it so you can keep using Dark Regeneration can make the difference between holding together through a tough battle and faceplanting.    

 

There's probably a bit more fine-tuning you can do endurance-wise here as I still think your endurance use vs recovery curve doesn't have as much margin as I usually like.    Liberal use of boosters helps some, especially for those powers where you won't really want to attune anyway such as the PerfShifter:EndMod IO in Stamina or the generic Endurance Reduction in Darkest Night.     With a tier 4 Agility alpha, with all four passive Accolades and with boosters I can get your endurance recovery / use to 3.88/s vs 3.19/s.    I usually aim for at least a 0.75 to 1.0 differential there, but that's not terrible and if you end up running Ageless it'll help a great deal.

I Think it turned out fairly good.. but again I am no expert.  Maybe Justaris can take one final look to give his thumbs up on the build.

I use ageless a lot .. and I have the accolade powers .. plus depending on the fight I will or will not use the fear aura.  The Theft of Essence IO in Dark Regeneration seems to proc almost every time I use the power and give back more endurance then it uses.  But I am still working out the endurance quarks.

 

I am still trying to decide if using the cardiac core paragon or if using the agility core paragon is better for this build. I am starting to lean towards the Cardiac. But I still have a bunch play testing to do.

I have a fully IO'd rad/dark armor scrapper that absolutely wrecks pve content. Really strong offensively, and pretty strong defensively. I've solo'd several task forces with mine and the whole hero's hero arc. The powersets together are really fun. You'll definitely enjoy the character.

Howdy,

 

I have made a few tweaks to the build I posted so I guess this is the "final - final" build - until I get bored again or until the toon does not do what I want.

 

I was able to keep all the defenses - make a few tweaks to endurance - and get a few damage procs in a few powers. 

 

hope this can help someone in the future. As per usual if you can find a way to make it better please say so, I want the best / most playable toon I can get.

Looking good!    Your endurance tweaks are much improved now  - they'll be even better with the passive Accolades in play.     There's not much here that I think needs further revision.    You've got softcap Defense for S/L/F/C/E/N plus Melee, which is superb, and your Resistances are hard-capped to everything but Energy and Toxic. (and those numbers aren't bad, at 77% and 69% respectively.    You also have a really solid endurance curve now, with 3.88/s recovery to 2.75/s usage.     I like to have somewhere between 0.75 to 1.0 differential there to account for frequent use of attacks and you have that and then some.     Add in the passive regeneration bonuses from the Melee hybrid and you've got powerful mitigation with the strongest heal in the game to recover if anything gets a lucky strike.   

 

I'd consider using Ageless Radial Epiphany  for its Defense Debuff Resistance - you don't really need the extra recovery from the Core line with everything else you're running (especially the Cardiac alpha) and the DDR can be really important at times.     Other than that, the only other change I'd make is to use Boosters on all your generic IOs to +5, as well as any Set you don't intend to Attune.

What about running Control Radial Embodiment to increase the magnitude of your mezzes and deal extra damage to those you have mezzed? Looking at running one of these right now and I was thinking it would jive really well with all the mezzes dark/radition has. Spiritual Radial Paragon would give you insane control abilities if I'm reading it all correctly.

The problem with running Spiritual is that your endurance curve in this particular build relies to a great degree on the endurance discounts given by Cardiac.     Switching away from Cardiac changes the endurance curve to 3.88 recovery/s vs 3.68/s usage, a margin of only 0.2.   That combined with the extra recharge from Spiritual will mean you'll easily exhaust your endurance with even moderate amounts of Rad Melee power usage.    

 

This isn't to say that you can't make a build that uses Control Radial and Spiritual Radial, but it isn't this build.    You'd have to do a total redesign with more endurance management baked into the build itself to make a variant like that work.     The Clarion destiny also has a boosting effect that can work well in that context.   Bottom line is that you'd likely have to trade some survivability to obtain that control.     Control can be a great means of managing aggro and I think for the majority of content a variant like that could work well, but may struggle against AVs where the dreaded triangles give very high mags of protection when active.

Howdy,

 

So, I have made a few more tweaks – to my Dark / Radiation build.  (I got bored) I wanted a bit more damage and regeneration.

 

Highlights and the low light of endurance use.

This toon is an endurance pig. I have found with this particular build you have to run Cardiac Incarnate if you want to run all your toggles. I Like running all the toggles so this is the Alpha I have to run.

This build also really takes advantage of the 4 big permanent accolades (get them they are worth it)

Endurance recovery is 3.59 per second

With all toggles on except for Darkest Night endurance use is at 2.55 per second. With Darkest Night on endurance use is 2.88 per second.

I checked in game on all endurance and recovery stats since I find Mids can be a bit wonky on a few things.

Health Recovery is 1.13% per second (27.43 hp/per)

Un-buffed HP is 2431.6

45% Soft capped defense to almost all damage types – non capped defense types are covered with 90% resistance.

90% resistance to almost all damage types. – non capped resistances are covered with 45% soft capped defenses.

Damage procs were put in powers where it did not affect tanking ability.

Added a 4th Armageddon to Atom Smasher for the extra 15% accuracy buff to all powers. I think the extra accuracy is needed for Cloak of Fear and Oppressive Gloom.

The damage on the toon is not spectacular but its better than my other attempts at a Dark/Radiation tanker.

It is hard to be killed on this build – At least so far for me.  For a quick test, I ran 4x8 AE farms (both fire type and Smashing and Lethal type) Went afk with no auto heal turned on. This build was able to clear the farm with zero issues and no healing besides the built in health regeneration. (I turned on Atom Smasher to auto for DPS while AFK)

I have tanked a few GM's and have not had to use this builds heal spell as of yet.

I have not ran Statesmen or other huge TF’s as of yet – (my kids tend to dominate my time right now and don't want to have to bail on my group)

Per usual, Please comment.  If you think there is a better tweak, please let me know so I can make the changes. This is the only toon I run, so I want to have the best possible toon I can.
