So I was thinking about trying a blaster. I wanted to work from range. Maybe with hover. I was thinking Fire/Something. I played Fire/Energy Melee back in live, but that was more a blapper. I wanted to try staying more ranged this time around. I see a recent build posted for Fire/Atomic. Is that good? It seems to have an immobilize. That sounds useful. Not that knocking things across the room as energy melee didn't keep them off me. Anyone got a newbie friendly build they'ld recommend? It will be my first time levelling a blaster. My blaster in Live never made it to 50.

Water/temp is about newbie friendly as they come. You can add in Cold Mastery for a shield and heal. I only use the PBAoE from /temp to really get in melee range even if I have some other melee based powers which might get use once in a while at 50.

Many Blaster secondaries are going to have around 2-3 melee attacks in them as that was the standard from the start. Newer sets try to buck that trend a bit, with Tac Arrow being the most obvious. There's also Devices to consider, but you may have to like toebombing to really get into it. I'm going to throw /Plant into the ring, even if it has a few melee attacks. It has a ranged immob and hold, a good passive recovery/regen power, and even a toggle debuff and area hold if you want them.

I have a water/ice I run and it does incredibly well. /ice is a great noob friendly set. Can skip most of the abilities and the AoE slow aura is enough to hit people from range.

Just dinged 50 today on a AR/Tactical Arrow Blaster.  Ranged softcap.  Works perfect for getting the cones lined up and I actually LOVE Ignite as a follow up to an immobilized spawn from my ESD arrow.  Also a nice trick to run into your own Ignite patch as it doubles as a melee safe zone since everything is trying to Baywatch themselves out of there very, very slowly while you just cackle and kill.

 

Might be my new favorite Blaster.

I think Fire/TA is a strong combo. I've attached a sample build with fast activating, high damage powers, typed defenses and even a mass Hold:
