Shield/Savage Alpha slot choice (or any other build advice if anyone sees improvement opportunities!)

Just dinged level 50 this weekend on my Shield / Savage Melee Tanker. Earth ancillary just for thematic reasons (as an Armadillo).

I'm all IO'd up, but deliberating over what Alpha Incarnate to slot. Would welcome any suggestions from folks with more experience!

I'm already soft-capped on positional, resistances are decent (although could still be higher...), and no endurance issues.

I'm leaning towards Musculature Core, but could also see cases for Nerve Radial or Resilient Core/Radial.

I heard but never tested that Savage leap works really well with procs. Something to think about maybe.

It does but unfortunately activation time and recharge time just weren't worth the trade offs. It worked out much better to pick up the bonuses from MotT and SA in all my testing and playing. Putting the procs in Rending Flurry was so much more gratifying!

This is super helpful to cross-reference, thank you for sharing! I always forget about HO's... probably some slot saving I can do here where some of the set bonuses I'm getting on some of the frankenslotting isn't worth it and the HO slotting is superior.

Any reason for Superior Gauntlet v. Might in Savage Strike?

Preventive Medicine Proc` isn't something I thought was a "must-have" slot, but in reading up on it, it sounds like it procs pretty frequently. Whoopsies! Should I be slotting this on most characters?

So I'm clear... all the damage procs you're slotting are straight up better DPS than damage enhancements (and superior to the set bonus for Superior Might)? Is that a function primarily of the attacks being AoE's so when they proc it's more significant? I'm still trying to wrap my head around when to proc and when not to...

That is a pretty compelling reason to go Musculature, too, if I'm understanding correctly (i.e... you can free up some of the pre-ED damage slots for the procs to let more of the Musculature damage buff push through before diminishing returns).

I prefer the +resistance on a Tank being in a cone or AOE power as it "seems" to proc more often (I am not a numbers guy). I just found my resistance stayed consistently higher when in the cone over the single target and as a tank I like having multi-layered resistance + defense.

The absorb proc is great for those times when things penetrate your DDR (stupid master of ITF) and you need to quickly high tail it out of danger.

I find a good blend of procs and +damage/accuracy/end to be best for my playstyle. You can pick up more damage with more procs but lower to-hit and accuracy (I hate missing) but my luck tends towards the negative so I try to keep accuracy high.

I try to squeeze Musculature into every tank for that extra damage push.

I was inspired by the build I put together in the Shield/War Mace thread. I wanted to play it, but have played a lot of War Mace and wanted to try something new. Savage melee seemed like a fun fit.

My build has a little less recharge than OP, but is incarnate softcapped to all positional defense, and has a modest improvement in S/L resist as well.

I prefer ATO sets to go in attacks I will use where the procs actually matter. Large crowds tend to melt quickly, so I find them much more effective in attacks that live in my ST chain, as hard single targets are where they will really matter. You have to work with the sets available for the attacks you have, though! Sometimes you can't balance everything perfectly.

I based my build on the shield/WM I put together, but am still inexperienced with Savage Melee. I understand Hemorrhage is not very good on tanks, and I've seen plenty of mixed opinions on Shred. Maiming slash serves my slotting priorities better anyhow. I don't really have a feel for how the flow of blood frenzy will affect my attack chain yet.

Note that this is not a very good build for someone who doesn't have flying as a part of their concept!

Edit: Switched the slotting of savage leap and shield charge to better take advantage of SL's procability.

Second Edit: Managed to remove the kick muling and put those slots elsewhere while still retaining incarnate softcap.

I'd love to understand more about in-combat effectiveness or any tips and tricks regarding Savage Melee. It's disappointing to see how sad Hemorrhage makes people - I'd love to have a third chunky ST attack. Savage Leap looks like it will more than make up for it in fun and damage though!

I am not a fan of fly but if you are that is great and i can definitely see a winged avatar character concept.

That being said you are sacrificing quite a bit with this build:
Maiming slash is redundant in a high level attack chain. I can typically cycle between Shred, Vicious Slash, RF, Shred, Vicious, RF mixing in SL and Shield Charge. Dropping the +recharge into SC and VS procs enough times to keep the attack chain going.

Also, slotting out 2 powers with the entire Tanker sets wont proc enough to be of large benefit. Would be better off splitting those sets to enhance proc chances and pick up some of the lower tier buffs.

6 Slotting Tough doesnt give you a lot of return on investment and could supplement Hami-Os and pick up a couple free slots to utilize elsewhere.

As for Comabt, focus on the mobility of your character - remember SL picks up bonus damage when at greater range, so  I tend to hop around a lot:

Open up with SL, Shred, VS, RF, build-up, shield charge, Shred, hop back, SL, RF. . . most everything = dead.

Thank you for the perspective!

I'll definitely pick up shred as I'm levelling to get a feel for it and potentially modify to switch it in. Do you pay much attention to when and with what you cash out your blood, or do you just go for the attacks as you like?

Is shred a part of your ideal st chain when focused on a hard target?

The tough slotting is for the set bonuses, most importantly the aoe defense. In previous iterations I had leaner slotting there and used ribos, but this ended up being more efficient given my goals. All of my defensive values are fully enhanced on powers, every unique I want is in the build, and every attack is fully slotted, so there aren't a lot of interesting targets if I siphon slots.

The full ato sets are strong in pursuit of sl resist. Usually I do cut them up for the procs as you suggest, but shield has a little more room to reach resist cap than some other primaries.

Take a look at the build I posted:
Shred damage: 329.4 vs your MS at 221.2

Plus with the tanker proc in shred I have consistent activation on the resist proc to boost my resistance across the board (usually I can get it to stack 3 times consistently)

If you like your slotting put the extra SA in SC for the AOE bonus. With your recharge time you wont get much benefit from the energy damage proc: you will only get the extra damage once per minute when you factor in activation time, DDR recharge, and timing. Drop the additional from Tough and you can pick up more resists by slotting MS in SL and still keep your AOE defenses high. I would take 3 slots from tough, put them in Maneuvers or Weave and pick up the additional accuracy and SL resist with LotG.

You are also missing the +HP from UG so should find room to slot that. And you are going to be battling your Endurance at several points especially when soloing +4Avs or taking the Master of ITF challenge.

Had a few minutes so I threw this build together. I did add in 2 incarnate slots (but disabled them so you could compare) but otherwise everything is exactly the same power choices as you took at the same level. I did bump it to +5 slotting since I see yours is on +5 slotting and brought you up on several key aspects. If I had more time I could tweak it further but only had 10 minutes or so!

Quick pluses/minuses: (some damage decreases but overall should see a damage increase with cone on Shred vs ST of MS since you will use Shred more often than SC or SL in standard rotations)

Savage Strike: +6 damage

Shred vs MS: +1 damage (cone vs ST so you will do more overall damage to large groups and maintain ST damage)

VS: -5 damage

SC: -50 damage

RF: +55 damage

SL: -70  damage
Reduced recharge by 40% or so but added +recharge to shield charge to help compensate (with more tweaking I would add this into VS also to keep recharge high)

Defense stayed about = across the board

Resist is up in all categories but S/L but double stacking +damage resist proc in Shred will make up for that (plus incarnates)

Increased resists in F/C/E/N/T

Increased max HP

Reduced EndUse

Increased Damage +4%

Increased End Rdx

Very good point on the shield charge dam proc - that isn't doing a whole lot given how often its used. If I keep it closer to my current build that could give me a few extra slots to play around with, shunting one for another aoe mule in a travel power, and sucking all but a couple ribos from tough.

Thank you for the build! Your slotting here will inform some further iteration. Overall, it is a significant sacrifice to S/L resist though ( going from 83 to 65 with no ATO procs - I do like giving the ATO proc room to provide benefit, but want to be close to 90 with only 1 proc for S/L. Other resistances I'm okay playing catchup by stacking). The pursuit of strong S/L resist is what guided a lot of my choices in this first build.

If I'm actually using maiming slash, it will easily double or triple stack the ato proc. If maiming slash is trash, that is obviously not the best way to achieve stacking.

I really like the idea of switching the fury proc into SL, as it will generally be the first attack in, and finding a better home for the purple damage proc in Rending Flurry.

How much does blood frenzy end up buffing Shred? I don't see this info in mids to compare. As it is, Maiming Slash has literally twice the DPA if I'm looking only at ST utility. I know Shred is a solid cone of course - do you find yourself relying on it to clear crowds, or do SL and RF pull most of the weight? I like to focus on optimizing my ST chain on Tankers, as my strongest aoes will tend to knock down the trash pretty quickly as I throw them in while focusing down harder targets.

For what it's worth, I've been playing with shred and will be keeping it for sure. It is a nice little cone! I don't think it is the absolute optimal st option, but will help me clear spawns faster overall, and give me some actual aoe when exemping.

And you should see your stacks on resist staying pretty standardized at 2-3 stacks.

The S/L decrease is why I also added the Melee Core Embodiment. With 2 enemies and triple stacked +resist ATO you are already above the resist cap by a fair amount, plus the other resists are at the cap also (other than toxic/psy).

I would still love to have a more intermediate recharge single target attack to put Might in. Hemorrhage would be perfect in terms of recharge/base damage if it didn't kinda stink. The aoe nature of Shred makes it tougher to proc when you don't have a crowd. What do you think Hemorrhage needs to work? Shortened DoT, faster animation? It's sad, because I like the unique approach of a heavy DoT. It just doesn't fit in with modern CoH gameplay.

I wouldn't want to rely on melee core for my resistances - partially because it's only up half the time, and also because all of the other facets (mez protection and defense) are wasted. Not taking Assault Hybrid is a much larger opportunity cost in my book.

I did use some of your slotting advice and maxed out avalanche in order to give savage leap room for the fury -res proc. Strict damage numbers go down a modest amount on leap, but I think both my ST and AoE damage will benefit overall.
