Grav/Pain Build

Finally got my Grav/Pain to 50 a little while back.. (shut up, she's fun to play, dammit!) Having previously never leveled a troller past the mid 20s I have ZERO idea how to slot her as I've been using regular IOs during leveling.. Also, I can't find much of ANYTHING for /pain on the boards on reddit or Discord..  for now I'm just trying to figure out a budget/basic build for 50/incarnate stuff.. here's my first incomplete and laughably terrible shot at it.. (yes I know my s/l is way past cap 😑) suggestions/advice welcome and appreciated!

Here is my cut. I'm sure I violated your budget constraints and will probably need minor fixes here and there.

Caps Ranged DEF, S/L RES drops to 67.5%. Above NET +2EPS, and give you Wormhole (I don't recommend skipping it). Buy a hover board to fly. Also puts you closer to perma Hasten and allows you to switch to Spiritual Alpha:

It's still seems pretty reasonable on influence to me.. no added purple sets and only a couple lotg or pvp global procs, which makes sense.

1- Ok.. so wormhole.. always seemed like we were moving too fast in x8+4 teams to utilize it, but I'm sure I'm thinking about it wrong..

2- Also, another thing.. looking at the hold and immob purple sets.. they're sort of.. underwhelming?  Or am I missing something there?  10% recharge is pretty nice, but that's about it..

3- I get ranged being the primary thing here, of course, but is AOE def not an issue or is it too much to try to boost that (or it winds up being at the expense of ranged)?

4- Why the change from Agility to Spiritual?

Thank you for the help and advice!

Don't skip Wormhole. It's one of the few powers where at endgame you can lob another spawn on top of Spawn #1. In other words you can use it to keep feeding the beast, unlike most other AOE controls at endgame where you'd be hard pressed to notice you used it.

Just warn PuGs if you're doing it. Some people get scared by enemies dropping on their heads.

1: IMO Wormhole is one of Grav/ signature powers. I realize the end game trivializes Controllers to a degree. My philosophy is: "It is better to have more control options". Note**: Thinking over the build I would probably look at a way to add the KB to KD PROC to Womhole; the scatter is problematic.

2: That is exactly right! The purple sets are usually very valuable for combos looking to optimize for global recharge; it was a rare commodity in the past. I think some of the newer sets have overshadowed these sets to a degree. Why? Many sets offer fifth slot +RECH while offering sixth slot +DEF as well. These are more valuable IMO. There is also a point of diminishing returns where more +RECH only brings marginal gains; global recharge has the most impact on extremely long charging powers.

3: You can build for AoE DEF. I think it is more difficult to build for while retaining a high global recharge. To be honest with you I haven't looked at AoE/F/C DEF Sets that offer +RECH as well. I think a Ranged/AoE DEF build will probably need to settle for something below softcap or give up global recharge.

4: Agility offers 45% End Mod, Rech 33% and DEF 20% vs Spiritual offers Rech 45%, Stun and Heal 33%.

Hope this helps to clarify some of my wacky design choices.

Best of luck!

I had already gotten to tier 4 with Agility, so I'll keep that for now and see how it goes.. I've used your recommendations as a template with some very minor changes for personal preference, but added Wormhole, etc.. so we'll see later tonight with the MSR or BAFs how we do.. again, thanks very much and I'll let you know how she rolls 😄

Just to offer the opposite viewpoint: There isn't much more fun available than catapulting a spawn of mobs at an unprepared Blaster. Why minimize the fun factor by warning them? 😄😈
