FM/Shield Help

So I rolled up a FM/Shield Scrapper after i came up with a concept for one but I've never really messed around with shield before so I'm wondering if anyone had some advice or personal experience to share about the set? :)

Shield is pretty straight forward defense set with some additional +resist and +hp. Essentially what you want to do is softcap your positional defenses and get your resists and hp as high as possible while still accomplishing your goals for the primary (probably perma hasten).

 

1) Get the two +3% defense IOs and slot them in some resist power (steadfast and gladiators(?)), one with the shield and tough are good mules for these

2) Get tough, weave & maneuver to increase your defenses and resists

3) Add IO sets to get all your positional defenses (melee, ranged, aoe) to 45%+, good sets for this are Mako's Bite, Obliteration, Scirocco's Dervish, a bit more expensive but also more powerful are the ATOs

4) Slot the power that give resistance and max hp fully to not miss out on those bonuses, your main thing is defense, but the rest will help too

5) With a basic setup you should be getting to around 50% defense debuff resistance, you can push this up to 92% by double stacking active defenses (you get it to double stack with perma hasten + one or two recharge IOs, depending on alpha) and then getting the radial ageless destiny power

This is my FM/SD scrapper. I built it as a generalist, but basically tried to push resists as high as possible without compromising ST or AOE damage. The build is at 68% s/l resist, you can get it higher, close to cap even, but it requires dropping ball lightning.

 

I think it's also theoretically a dps increase to drop greater fire sword and use scorch, because you can fit both scorch and incinerate in under the critical strikes buff, but I like hitting mobs with GFS.

 

The build isn't really cheap and endurance is an issue under heavy AOE, although you can maintain the ST attack chain for quite a while. that said, it's quite fun to play. I've soloed ITF at +1 in one hour and I think I could push that to +2 or +3, but I haven't had time. Could probably also run it faster if I played smarter.

Does /SD require these sets to really shine? just curious I have a lvl 40 /SD atm and was wondering if I should keep going to try to farm some Inf. Seems like its going to be an expensive set choice for me being pretty new to the game again.

If you're asking about my build, no. This is a pretty min max build. Maneuvers can be dropped, but you'll have to drop a lot of recharge for it, or drop musculature for agility. That comes at the cost of damage.

 

If you want a cheap, easy to cap SD, you can use maneuvers and agility to easily hit defense caps. You should still do fine damage, but don't expect to be getting the fastest plyon kill time ever or solo things with great speed. Musculature is a pretty good boost in damage.

 

That said, you can also run a sub-optimal attack chain (in fire's case it means you add in fire sword) and then your recharge requirement drops a lot. All you really need on shield is to keep active defense from dropping.

 

This is a long winded way of saying: you can make cheap /SD builds. I didn't take that route.

With this build, is it necessary to have HASTEN? Is there any particular ability to we are looking to have up more often other than the Active Defense? I ask this because I have active defense on auto since it isn't a toggle (which is stupid to me) and have slotted two crafted enhancements there that made it permanent now. So I couldn't possibly make Hasten an auto power now.
