I have a SS/Fire brute that I use for farming, and it's okay. I can do +4/8 Bloody Rainbows, but they take a long time and I have to jump out once usually to restock on purple insps. If I run out of those, my health starts to tank very quickly.

So, I was wondering if a more defensive build would farm well at all? I was thinking SS/WP or SS/Inv  In those scenarios I would really only be getting my AoE on from Footstomp and possibly something from epic, like Fireball or something. Would that still be an okay farm build, do you think? I just don't want to be so squishy once my purple buffs run out.

Thanks

The problem is your actual build for the character, not the sets you picked.  Just build 45% fire/cold defense and as much recharge as you can toss together and SS/Fire becomes one of the stronger (but not quite the strongest) farmers out there.

You should already have 90% fire resistance -- if you don't, you're really doing something wrong.

About 30% fire defense is the sweet spot, in my opinion, but adding more up to the softcap of 45% just makes things better, but a fire farmer with at least 30% fire defense and 90% resistance will rarely need to worry about inspirations.

You would get there through a combination of Weave, Maneuvers, maybe Combat Jumping, and set bonuses from IO sets that grant fire/cold defense.

As for the actual question you asked... no, no other more defensive set is going to allow you to farm faster, because burn is one of the best farming tools in the game.  But you certainly can farm on a few other sets if built right.  My choice would be bio, if I absolutely wasn't going to go with fire.

You really shouldn't need that much defense to be able to survive. My SS/Fire doesn't have much fire defense, but I can get by with one purple no problem.

Plus you have the extra damage mitigation from Foot Stomp. Maybe post your build? You should get more than enough inspiration drops to stay on your feet.

Here is what I could put together in Mids on my first attempt. Note some stuff I couldn't get in there like my epic choices and slots, plus I have Health 3 slotted with two preventative medicine IOs (absorb proc and health/absorb), plus weave I could not get in there (3 slotted with luck of the gambler), and tough has 3 x unbreakable guard IO (res/end, +7.5% max hp proc, res). I also have Hasten with 3 x recharge.

I also avoided Rage and Taunt on purpose. This build is pretty much for one map only: Bloody Rainbow. I don't need taunt there and I don't want to manage rage crash.

(I know that Fly and Afterburner make no sense given the above, but sometimes I like to fly around and look at stuff and this is my only level 50 character right now) I know I can gain a few slots by reducing Fly to one and Afterburner to two. Next respec, I will do that.

But this should be enough to illicit comments.

Be warned, it's pretty ugly. No idea, really, what I was doing plus a limited budget, plus an intense curiosity to just get some sets in place to see if it helps has lead to a pretty broken build, I think.
